A Study of The Lexical and Morpho-Syntactic Errors of Fourah Bay College Students
Get PDFThis study investigates the lexical and grammatical errors in the English usage of some Fourah Bay College students at the University of Sierra Leone. Selinker\u27s Inter-language Theory (1972) and Corder\u27s Error Analysis Approach (1981) were used as a theoretical framework in examining the learners\u27 errors. Data were collected by giving the learners a written composition to work on. From the subjects\u27 essays, lexical and grammatical errors were extracted and categorized. The lexical errors were categorized into first language transfer and learning induced. The grammatical errors were divided into first language transfer, over-generalisation of target language rules, ignorance of target language rules, false concepts hypothesised and universal hierarchy of difficulty. Recommendations were also offered in order to minimize the learners\u27 errors
Transitivity Analysis of the Short Story “The Happy Prince” Written by Oscar Wilde
Get PDFThe present study investigates how the writer has established different characters in the story with the choice of linguistic features. For this purpose the data were taken from the famous short story titled “The Happy Prince” written by an Irish writer Oscar Wilde. The researcher applied the systemic functional linguistic theory presented by Halliday for transitivity analysis of the text. The text was manually analysed by the researcher. All the processes, participants and circumstances were recognized from the whole text. They were arranged in the form of tables and charts. The results were discussed in the qualitative method of research. The results show that three types of process i.e. material (43.41%), relational (20.26%) and verbal (17.04%) were predominant in the whole text. The highest dominance of the material process shows that the writer has created dynamic and tangible actions in the text. Similarly circumstances of location i.e. place (52%) and time (20%) were dominant in the whole text. The significance of the study was also discussed in the educational perspective
Students\u27 Conceptual Mindfulness About Learning Pronunciation at College Level
Get PDFThe study highlights students\u27 conceptual mindfulness about learning pronunciation at college level. The objective of the study were; 1) to find out the usefulness of English language pronunciation among college students, 2) to highlight students\u27 problems in the way of learning English pronunciation at college level and 3) to find out the perceptions of students toward English pronunciation competence at college level. It was a descriptive study and questionnaire was used as a research tool. All the college students in the three districts (Okara, Pakpattan & Sahiwal) were included in the population. Fifty college students took from each district through simple random sampling techniques. So, the total sample of the study was 150 college students from three districts. Data was analyzed and find the mean score value for all the statement and then marked the mean score value with Levels of opinion. The results of the study informed us that learning the pronunciation of the 2nd language is difficult but not impossible; little concentration, practice and hard work is required to learn pronunciation of English language. It is concluded that four integrated skills; reading, listening, writing and speaking should be used in the teaching learning process for pronunciation and also used the \u27listen and repeat\u27 technique should be used

Lesson Exemplars in Teaching Pop-Up Writing to Literature Students
Get PDFThis study assessed the effectiveness of lesson exemplars in the teaching of pop-up writing to AB English students of Cebu Technological University- Main Campus during the Academic Year 2016-2017. This study utilized the quasi- experimental research design: the lesson exemplar is the independent variable while the students’ level of creativity in writing is the dependent variable. The study revealed that the entry level pop-up writing performance of the respondents was neutral in all criteria. This performance is numerically highest for story structure and lowest for creativity. Moreover, the LE1 pop-up writing performance of the respondents is good for story structure and topic development but remained neutral for language use and creativity, the LE2 popup writing performance of the respondents is good for story structure but remained neutral for language use, topic development, and creativity, and the LE3 pop-up writing performance of the respondents is good for all four (4) criteria. The increase in LE1 pop-up writing performance of the respondents is significant for story structure and topic development but the change is negligible for language use and creativity, the increase in LE2 pop-up writing performance of the respondents is significant for story structure; yet the changes are negligible for language use, topic development, and creativity, and there were no significant differences in the LE3 pop-up writing performance. Therefore, teachers may design more learning activities that would reinforce the aspects of pop-up writing

His ancestors had migrated from Mecca and settled in Multan. His father Shaikh Wajihuddin was married to the daughter of Maulana Husamuddin Tirmizi, who had migrated to Punjab in the wake of the Mongol invasions. Bahauddin Zakariya was born at Kot Karor, a village near Multan. While still a young boy, he memorized the Quran and learnt to recite it in seven styles of recitation. An Analysis of Reading Strategies Used by Ethiopian Higher Education Students: Evidence from Ambo University, Oromia, Ethiopia
Get PDFConcerned by increased problems about the students’ reading quality, this study was carried out to investigate the reading approach of English major students of Ambo University. To achieve this objective, all 52(31 male and 21 female) English major students of the University were purposely selected for the study because the number of the students is small to manage. Both quantitative and qualitative data were obtained from the respondents through Reading Achievement Tests, Questionnaire and Structured Interview and analyzed accordingly. The study mainly focused on the students’ approach to reading (adapted top-down or bottom-up) and the students’ ability to identify the main ideas and details, explicitly stated and implied information, the purpose and the tone of authors in five different reading genres: dialogues, directions, article, essays, and poems. The overall result of the study showed that 89.7% of the University students were exclusively limited to bottom-up approaches to reading and frustrated to determine the main ideas and implied information in the texts. In other words, no student answered more than 78% in reading comprehension items correctly in the tests. Moreover, half of the students could not answer above 50% in the comprehension questions. Therefore, the prescriptions for the solution to the problem lies in bringing about improvement in the students’ interactive approach to reading and thereby, improve students’ ability to identify the main ideas and details, explicitly stated and implied information, the purpose and the tone of authors in different reading genres: dialogues, articles, essays, directions and poem

Literature of the New Year: Literary Variations on the Celebration of the New Year
Get PDFIs the New Year really new or old? Happy or sad? Is it only part of the process and the cycle of seasons making one look back and think of death? Is it a time to wish to stay where one is or hope for opportunities and possibilities? Like a point in a circle, is every day a New Year’s day? Is it a time for nostalgia and reminiscence or promises and resolutions for the future? With the (Gregorian and the British Government) changes in the Western calendar at different times in history and with different countries/cultures celebrating the New Year at different times of the year and with the fiscal year, political (election) year, and academic year being different from the traditional New Year of January 1st, does the New Year mark the beginning and the ending in just an arbitrary way? Centuries ago Britain’s earliest Poets Laureate introduced the tradition of writing a New Year poem. Since then there have been many authors writing New Year essays and poems. Action Research on Exploring the Effectiveness of Continuous Assessment on English Common Course in a Case of Plant Science Year I Students Aksum University Shire Campus
Get PDFThis action research was aimed mainly to investigate the effectiveness of continuous assessment in English common course in case of students of plant science first year program at shire campus. The study involved 55 (M =15, F= 40) students and 1 male English common course instructor as participant of the study. It also employed three data gathering tools: questionnaire, interview and document analysis. Data obtained from these multisource were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively in which case percentage and verbal description were used respectively. Hence, the finding indicates that there were no bolded theoretical and practical implementation gaps of CA among instructors and students. However, many impressing factors were found, which impede the implementation of CA. Among these, large number of students in a section, instructors’ workload, students’ attitudes toward CA, lack of specific criteria for checking subjective form of students’ assignment and project work were some. Generally, the study attempts to forward action to be taken to tackle the problem, such as lessen teachers’ workload, minimizing number of students in one section accordance with MEO policy, proposing clear-cut criteria for checking and giving feedback for subjective case assignments. Moreover, instructors need to motivate students to work or involve in CA as well as committed themselves to implement effectively that contributed to prove quality of education
