The study was conducted to compare the proximate analysis of the Guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus Jacq.) cultivars (i.e., Local Guinea grass; LG, Mombasa grass; MG) harvested at either 30- or 45-day cutting intervals (CI) in Leyte, Philippines. The Guinea grass cultivars were planted in four plots; at 65 days, all grasses were manually harvested by zeroing. Succeeding harvests followed either at 30- or 45-day CI for six months. The treatment combinations were as follows: LG30 (LG, 30-day CI), LG45 (LG, 45-day CI), MG30 (MG, 30-day CI), and MG45 (MG, 45-day CI). LG has significantly higher dry matter (DM; except 4th harvest), OM, and GE contents (3rd and 4th harvests) than MG. In contrast, MG has significantly higher CP (3rd harvest) and ash (except 3rd harvest) contents than LG. Between CI, Guinea grass cultivars harvested at 45-CI have significantly higher DM, ash (2nd harvest), and OM contents than those harvested at a 30-day CI. In contrast, Guinea grass cultivars harvested at 30-day CI have significantly higher CP (3rd harvest) and EE contents (interaction effect at 4th harvest) than those harvested at 45-day CI. MG can be offered for ruminants requiring high CP and ash contents on a grass-based diet, especially when harvested at a 30-day CI. LG can be offered to ruminants requiring a low plane of nutrition

The pervasive adoption of short-form video (SFV) platforms, including TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels, among college students has sparked considerable debate regarding their influence on academic performance. This study aimed to investigate the perceived relationship between SFV consumption (considering platforms, content types, and usage patterns) and academic performance among college students, while also exploring the platforms\u27 potential for learning enhancement. A correlational quantitative design was employed, administering an online survey to 92 college students, primarily from a single university in Manila. Data were analyzed using descriptive and correlational statistics. The study found that general short-form video (SFV) consumption during academic periods had no significant negative effect on academic performance (M = 2.18, SD = 0.86, p > 0.05). However, educational SFV content showed a strong positive influence on learning outcomes (M = 3.34, Cohen’s d = 0.82, p < 0.001), demonstrating significant benefits for academic performance. This study highlights how short-form videos (SFVs) can serve as a valuable teaching tool, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 and 10 on Quality Education and Reducing Inequalities. It provides evidence-based strategies for using these digital platforms to develop 21st-century skills. The findings also back innovative pedagogical approaches that prepare students for digital citizenship and lifelong learning. By making educational content more accessible, SFVs can help reduce educational inequalities and contribute to SDG 10 on social inclusion

Nanocellulose and Phycocyanin as Viable Additives for Electrospun Fibers: A Review of Functional Properties, Electrospinning Parameters, and Physicochemical Characterization

    No full text
This literature review aims to highlight the developments and future directions in the use of nanocellulose and phycocyanin as electrospinning additives for biomedical applications, specifically in wound healing. Nanocellulose, a cellulose derivative known for its surface area, mechanical strength, and biocompatibility, is proposed as a sustainable alternative to enhancers of mechanical properties. Phycocyanin, a blue pigment from cyanobacteria, possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties, which may potentially enhance the performance of nanocellulose. The combination of the two components in electrospun fibers demonstrates significant promise for effective wound healing applications. However, progress is limited by the scarcity of experimental studies integrating both materials. One of the future directions of the study is improving the stability and shelf-life of phycocyanin within nanofibers, including approaches such as encapsulation and protective coatings. Scaling and manufacturing challenges, including high energy consumption and harsh chemical treatments in nanocellulose extraction, as well as the parameters of electrospinning, need to be addressed to enable mainstream commercialization. Further exploration of sustainable and purely physical extraction methods for nanocellulose is also critical for environmentally friendly alternatives to process scale-up and intensification
