A Comparative Study of Self-Stigma of Seeking Help among Filipino College Students

    No full text
This study examined gender differences in self-stigma of seeking psychological help among Filipino college students, which was defined as negative beliefs and attitudes that individuals have that are significant barriers to seeking psychological help for mental health concerns. This study employed a causal-comparative design. About 210 students were recruited, with an equal 105 males and 105 females. Utilizing the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help Scale (SSOSH) to assess students\u27 attitudes or behaviors related to seeking psychological or academic help often reflects their fear of stigma or embarrassment. An independent samples t-test indicated that males reported significantly higher self-stigma (M = 2.79, SD = 0.67) than females (M = 2.33, SD = 0.61), t(208) = -5.24, p < .001, d = 0.72 (large effect). Findings suggest the need for gender-sensitive interventions to reduce stigma and promote help-seeking behavior among male students. The observation of higher self-stigma in males indicates the influence of gender norms surrounding the stigma in seeking mental health support. To address this, culturally informed programs and mental health education may help encourage help-seeking behavior and reduce the stigma

A Gendered Discourse Analysis of Biological and Trans-Women’s Narratives on Women’s History Month Celebration

    No full text
This research paper presents a comparative analysis of the narratives from biological and trans women regarding the inclusion of trans women in celebrating Women\u27s History Month. Utilizing Labov and Waletzky\u27s Structural Approach to Narrative, the study examines the linguistic nuances in the narratives of ten participants—five trans women advocating for inclusion (Group A) and five biological women expressing reservation about trans women’s inclusion (Group B). The analysis reveals significant differences between the two groups\u27 use of evaluative and referential clauses. Group A\u27s narratives predominantly feature evaluative clauses (59%), reflecting personal emotions and subjective interpretations of their experiences. Group B\u27s narratives are characterized by a higher percentage of referential clauses (65%), focusing on their actual experiences and centering on the factual events. This disparity illustrates how each group\u27s beliefs manifest in their narratives, highlighting the complexities of gender identity and inclusion within feminist discourse. The findings also revealed the importance of identifying referential and evaluative clauses in understanding the stances of trans and biological women, further underscoring the importance of recognizing diverse perspectives in the ongoing conversation about women\u27s rights and the need for a deeper understanding of the implications of these differences in shaping feminist narratives. This study contributes valuable insights to the fields of feminism, linguistics, and social activism, advocating for a more inclusive dialogue that honors the experiences of all women

Wellness Indices of Coast Guard Drill Instructors Toward the Development of a Health Management Program

    No full text
Coast Guard Drill Instructors (CGDIs) play a vital role in shaping recruits into disciplined service members. However, the demanding nature of their profession can impact overall wellness, making it essential to assess and address health concerns to sustain both individual performance and organizational effectiveness. This study examined the wellness indices of CGDIs by evaluating their physical, mental, and emotional health and explored how demographic factors may influence these dimensions. The primary goal was to develop a tailored Health Management Program suited to their specific needs. A mixed-methods design was employed, integrating quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews. Standardized instruments—including the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21), and Emotional Style Questionnaire (ESQ)—were used to assess wellness levels. ANOVA was conducted to identify significant differences across demographic groups, while interviews with a PCG psychologist and selected military personnel provided richer contextual insights. Findings indicated that while the majority of CGDIs maintain stable mental health, a subset exhibited extreme symptoms of depression and anxiety, particularly CGDIs who are single, junior in rank and those assigned far distant from the place of residence. Despite the physically demanding nature of their duties, a significant level of sedentary behavior was reported. Emotional wellness was found to be moderate overall, with differences noted by age, birth order, and RTC assignment. The study resulted in the development of a comprehensive health program encompassing mental health support, physical activity, stress management, and spiritual counseling. ..

    No full text
This study investigated the relationship between demographic and professional factors—specifically gender, age, and physical education (P.E.) areas handled—and health and sleep metrics among P.E. teachers. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed among 374 P.E. teachers. Data were collected using validated instruments, including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), along with direct and smart app health measurements. Statistical analyses included independent t-tests, Pearson correlations, ANOVA, and chi-square tests. The sample comprised 58.8% males with a mean age of 38.9 years. Gender showed minimal relationships with health metrics except for daily steps (females higher, p = 0.05). Age was significantly associated with sleep quality (r = 0.15, p = 0.03), sleep disorder prevalence (χ2 = 10.5, p = 0.03), BMI category (χ2 = 12.3, p = 0.02), and blood pressure (systolic: r = 0.20, p = 0.01; diastolic: r = 0.18, p = 0.02). Most notably, P.E. areas handled showed the strongest associations with health metrics, particularly physical activity levels, daily steps, sleep quality, and BMI categories (all p < 0.05). Professional specialization within P.E. teaching emerged as the most significant predictor of health and sleep outcomes, surpassing demographic factors. These findings inform institution for targeted wellness interventions to revisit and review institutional policies for P.E. educators

    Get PDF
The study aims to describe the buying behavior of male and female bank personnel and their customer satisfaction. The buying behavior represents three indicators: perceived benefits, domain of specific innovativeness, and shopping orientation. This study utilizes a descriptive correlational approach, which focuses on describing the significant relationship between the two variables: buying behavior and customer satisfaction. The data of the study is collected using a survey questionnaire distributed to 106 participants in each selected bank. The study’s findings reveal that male and female bank personnel have high impulsivity in terms of perceived benefits, domain of specific innovativeness, and shopping orientation, but male bank personnel have low impulsivity in terms of the domain of specific innovativeness. It also indicates that male and female bank personnel are satisfied with purchasing online; positive product reviews attract them, and the thing that male and female bank personnel are unsatisfied with is the use of credit cards to purchase online. Findings indicate a significant relationship between buying behavior and customer satisfaction of male and female but with a low correlation for male and a moderate correlation for female and indicates no significant difference between the buying behavior of male and female bank personnel. Therefore, male and female bank personnel show an interest in and are highly impulsive in purchasing online

    No full text
Language learners often encounter challenges when speaking a non-native language, such as English as a Second Language (ESL). These difficulties can arise not only from the complexity of language skills but also due to anxiety. This study investigated language anxiety, spe-cifically communication apprehension, among freshmen college stu-dents enrolled in a basic communication course. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed, including a survey questionnaire and focus group discussions. The findings indicate that a majority of students experience average levels of communication apprehension. Notably, females exhibited higher communication apprehension compared to males. These results suggest that language anxiety, par-ticularly communication apprehension, may be influenced by expo-sure to language use and the classroom environment

This study assessed the vulnerability and coping capacity to disaster risks of selected barangays in Mandaon, Masbate, Philippines in 2013. The study made use of a descriptive survey method wherein survey-questionnaire based on the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Framework (NDRRMF) was used in data collection. Statistical tools included frequency count, percentage, and rank order. The data on age, gender, member per household, and income were assessed using the dependency ratio, female-to-male ratio, and poverty index. The DRRM programs implemented were analyzed by comparing them to the DRRM Framework by FAO. Results revealed that selected barangays were vulnerable to disaster risks, and the people had low coping capacity based on their age with a dependency ratio of 68.2%. In the gender component, the females are less resilient with a 1:1 ratio. In terms of income, the barangays are found to be vulnerable to the fact that 50% of the total households are found to be living below the poverty line (about $1/day/person). The programs, projects, and activities implemented by the agencies and organizations of the government are under the category of prevention, mitigation, and preparedness only based on the DRRM Framework. The barangays are also vulnerable since there are no programs yet related to response, rehabilitation, and recovery that are implemented

This study explored the challenges faced by Bachelor of Sec-ondary Education (BSEd) Major in English students at President Ramon Magsaysay State University (PRMSU) Santa Cruz Campus during the Academic year 2023-2024 in learning English Lan-guage through literature exposure, frequent reading of literature materials, and vocabulary acquisition. The research was guided by Krashen\u27s Implicit Vocabulary Learning Theory and Ru-melhart\u27s Schema Theory. A quantitative research design utiliz-ing a survey questionnaire via Google Forms was conducted with 60 BSEd English students at PRMSU Santa Cruz to assess de-mographics, literature exposure frequency, and challenges in vocabulary acquisition and literature exposure. The results indicated that although literature exposure was perceived as beneficial for vocabulary development, students encountered challenges such as difficulties in teaching methods, time constraints, understanding complex texts, limited exposure to the target language, and technological unfamiliarity. Addition-ally, female students faced challenges in all macro language skills areas. Notably, the students\u27 year level did not significantly influ-ence the challenges they encountered. However, a difference was observed between sex in challenges related to language exposure and reading comprehension. Furthermore, a positive correlation was found between challenges in vocabulary acquisition, macro language skills, vocabulary instruction, and vocabulary develop-ment.In conclusion, the study highlights the significant impact of challenges in learning English through literature exposure, fre-quent reading, and vocabulary acquisition on BSEd-English students. The researchers recommend adopting a comprehen-sive approach to address these challenges effectively
