Hanging Green Space: Assessing the Relationship between Students\u27 Horticultural Involvement and Environmental Awareness
The world is experiencing various environmental issues which pose serious threat to human health and well-being. These problems must be introduced to the classroom to raise environmental awareness among the students. In relation to the strategies in teaching environmental education, schools utilize gardens to provide students with hands-on learning. This study aimed to determine the relationship between Grade 11 STEM students’ horticultural involvement and their environmental awareness through Hanging Green Space Project at Pasig National High School during the second semester of the school year 2024-2025. The study employed descriptive correlational research design and gathered data from selected 81 Grade 11 STEM students through survey questionnaires. Descriptive statistics revealed that students strongly agreed on their active involvement in horticulture and demonstrated high levels of environmental awareness after conducting the Hanging Green Space Project. Meanwhile, inferential statistics using Pearson’s correlation showed a significant relationship between students’ horticultural involvement and environmental awareness, correlation values ranging from 0.221 to 0.371 (p<0.05), indicating weak to moderate positive relationship. These results imply that students who are actively engaged in horticultural activities tend to be more aware of the environmental issues. Furthermore, the study recommends incorporating horticultural or gardening activities various discipline to connect the practical activities with theoretical and ethical reflections. In addition, incorporating gardening into a broader curriculum framework is encouraged to sustain development of horticultural involvement and promote awareness of environmental issues among wider groups of learners
Research Writing Competence of Master Teachers and School Heads and its Implications to Research Management
This study assessed the research writing competence of master teachers and school heads through survey questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Descriptive data analysis techniques, including frequency counts, percentage distributions, and means were utilized to summarize and interpret the data. The research productivity profile indicated a clear need for additional training to enhance the research skills and knowledge of the educators. A few number of respondents had not undergone research-related training from 2017 to 2021, and a small number had completed research studies, presented research findings at conferences, and published research articles. This highlights the need to improve research generation, dissemination, and publication skills. Regarding research writing competence, self-assessments varied by role and education level. Elementary level master teachers demonstrated moderate competence in writing research, while expressing limited familiarity with knowledge on research methodology. Junior High School (JHS) master teachers and school heads generally perceived themselves as highly competent in various research writing tasks. However, they continued to encounter challenges in certain areas. They displayed high competence in conducting quantitative and qualitative research and in making use of their ICT skills in research. Additionally, they demonstrated a strong understanding of research ethical principles and standards. Overall, the study identified areas for improvement, including connecting research findings with existing literature, establishing research gaps, and enhancing research dissemination and presentation skills. These findings inform the design of targeted training programs and interventions to address these specific areas of improvement among master teachers and school heads, leading to improved research management in schools

Glow-Up or Fade Out? The Interplay of Glutathione Soap Use with Atti-tudes Towards Colorism and Celebrity Influence among Young Profession-als
The growing market of glutathione products among young Filipina professionals reflects the enduring influence of colorism and celebrity-driven beauty standards in contemporary Philippine society. This study investigated the relationship between glutathione soap use and two potential influencing factors: attitudes toward colorism and celebrity endorsement-influence. An online survey was distributed to 207 young Filipina professionals (ages 22-35) residing in Metro Manila who had used glutathione soap for at least six months. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Spearman\u27s Rank Correlation, and multiple linear regression. Results showed moderate glutathione soap use (Mdn = 3), with moderate frequency (Mdn = 3) but low intensity of use (Mdn = 2). Attitudes toward colorism were moderate overall (Mdn = 3), with strong self-concept association (Mdn = 4) and moderate ratings for impression formation, affiliation, attraction, and upward mobility (Mdn = 3). Celebrity endorsement-influence was moderate (Mdn = 3), with strong perceived attractiveness (Mdn = 4) but moderate trustworthiness and expertise ratings (Mdn = 3). Neither attitudes toward colorism (ρ = -0.001, p = 0.986) nor celebrity endorsement-influence (ρ = -0.118, p = 0.089) significantly correlated with glutathione soap use. The regression model explained only 1.8% of the variance in glutathione soap use (R² = 0.018, p = 0.161). These findings suggest young Filipina professionals exercise greater agency in navigating beauty standards than previously recognized, maintaining critical distance from colorist narratives despite acknowledging their societal impact. This research provides insights for the skincare industry, public health education, and sociological understanding of evolving beauty standards in post-colonial contexts
Implementation of Open High School Program at Dflomnhs
This study assessed the implementation and challenges of the Open High School Program (OHSP) at Doña Francisca Lacsamana de Ortega Memorial National High School (DFLOMNHS), an alternative educational model designed for learners unable to attend traditional classes due to personal, economic, or geographic barriers. Using a mixed-methods descriptive-correlational design, the study surveyed 48 learners and 16 teacher-implementers through validated questionnaires, with reliability coefficients ranging from 0.931 to 0.986. Quantitative data were analyzed using means, t-tests, and Pearson correlations, while qualitative responses were subjected to thematic analysis.
Findings revealed that most learners were female (70.83%), aged 16–20, from low-income households (81.25%), and had parents with low educational attainment. While 35.42% of learners performed at an outstanding academic level, 20.84% did not meet expectations. The OHSP was generally well-implemented across four dimensions (M = 3.37 for learners, M = 3.32 for teachers), with no statistically significant difference in perceptions (t = 0.24, p = 0.82). Correlational analysis showed no significant relationships between implementation and learner or teacher profiles, underscoring the program’s equitable reach. However, recurring challenges included limited parental support, inconsistent technology access, and gaps in teacher coordination and instructional delivery.
Aligned with global findings on flexible education and student engagement, this study highlights the potential of OHSP to promote educational equity. It recommends enhanced parent training, regular teacher upskilling in digital pedagogy, and stronger community-school collaboration to sustain and improve program outcomes
Employability Skills Perception of Employers and Student Interns
Despite earning their degrees, many graduates still face a harsh truth—they\u27re not meeting employer expectations. This study explores the skill gap between employers and student interns, focusing on Financial Management graduates from Nueva Vizcaya State University. Using a descriptive-quantitative method, data were gathered through survey questionnaires from 65 student interns and 15 Host Training Establishment (HTE) supervisors. Findings revealed both similarities and gaps in perceptions. For basic skills, employers placed more importance on communication, computer literacy, and being good with numbers than students. In hard skills, employers valued financial reporting, data analytics, risk assessment, and business acumen more than students did. For interpersonal skills, employers emphasized collaboration and negotiation, while students ranked them lower. In 21st-century skills, employers rated initiative and ICT literacy higher than students. Finally, regarding supplementary skills, employers gave greater importance to decision-making and data analysis — areas where students showed less awareness. The results indicate a disconnect between academic preparation and industry expectations, highlighting the need for stronger collaboration between schools and employers
Barrier Property, Antimicrobial Susceptibility, and Biodegradability of Waste Cassava Peel Starch/Waste Shrimp Shell Chitosan/Sorbitol Bioplastic Films
Barrier properties, antimicrobial susceptibility potential, and biodegradability of bioplastics are critical indicators of bioplastic viability in industrial use, especially when raw materials to the production were sourced from food waste, such as waste cassava peel starch and shrimp shell chitosan. This study aims to investigate these properties from the created bioplastic film primarily consisting of cassava peel starch (CPS) and shrimp shell chitosan (SSCHT), with sorbitol (SOR) as a plasticizer, utilizing green methods and a constrained D-optimal mixture design. Films were assessed via water uptake, water vapor transmission rate, morphology, antimicrobial susceptibility, and biodegradability. Models were generated in terms of water uptake (p = 0.0684) and water vapor transmission rate (p = 0.0013). CPS (p = 0.0008) had a significant effect on water uptake levels due to its hydroxyl groups, which form hydrogen bonds that retain water. On the other hand, water vapor transmission rate was significantly affected by CPS (p = 0.0001) and SOR (p = 0.0001). Although SSCHT (p = 0.0787) was statistically insignificant its acetyl group reduced the hydrophilic nature of CPS. CPS and SOR were found to positively affect weight loss through biodegradation due to increased hydrophilicity and microbial colonization. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) at 300x magnification revealed visibly smooth morphology of films, while at 1500x and 6500x magnification the films had visible crevices possibly due to greater SSCHT concentrations lower WVTR, and higher CPS concentrations raising water absorption levels.
Non-Education Science Teachers’ Teaching Competency and Challenges as Inputs to Proposed Teacher Training Model and Training Program for Secondary Schools
This study explored the experiences and teaching competencies of non-education science teachers in the Division of Zambales before and during the pandemic to develop a training model suited for effective science instruction. A mixed-method sequential explanatory design was employed, involving 74 non-education science teachers and 36 supervisors. Quantitative data were collected and analyzed first, followed by qualitative data to deepen understanding of the results. Findings revealed that while teachers demonstrated general proficiency in curriculum planning, and instruction, assessment remained their weakest area. Challenges intensified during the pandemic, particularly in curriculum planning and assessment. Teachers faced difficulties in content depth, lesson planning, evaluation tools, and adapting instruction to student needs. Coping strategies were largely intrapersonal, including self-reliance, strategic planning, and emotional regulation, with limited reliance on external support. The study led to the development of the ELEVATE Teacher Training Model, a professional development framework with seven components: Enrich, builds content and planning skills; Leverage, promotes active learning and peer support; Equip, strengthens assessment skills; Validate, aligns strategies with learner traits; Adapt, encourages flexible, data-driven teaching; Transform, integrates ICT and reshapes negative coping; and Empower, supports continuous growth and leadership. The model provides a practical basis for training programs tailored to non-education science teachers. It provides a practical foundation for training programs tailored to non-education science teachers. Future research should assess its implementation, effectiveness, and long-term impact on teaching practices especially for non-education major teachers
Developing Soft Skills of Students Through Multimodal Instruction by Pre-Service Educators in a State University
Given the low ranking of Filipino children in reading, science, and mathematics at the latest 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), and the lack of empirical evidence about multimodal instruction of teachers and the development of soft skills of students, this mixed methods study looked into the transformative impact of multimodal instruction on the development of soft skills of students such as communication, flexibility, and leadership. It will also track the influence of soft skills on student outcomes such as employability, academic success, and personal growth. Survey questionnaires were used to effectively assess and monitor the data given by the respondents and a five-point Likert Scale was utilized to establish a clear conclusion of the variables. Semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions were conducted to reassure the quantitative findings. Results of the descriptive statistics showed that all of the variables met the highest mean, strongly agreeing with statements from each variable and was further reinforced by the qualitative analysis from the respondents. Moreover, it was found out that pre-service teachers prefer to use videos and animations, as their main multimodal instruction, to illustrate complex concepts visually. Next is incorporating visual diagrams, mind influence maps, or conceptual maps, and third but not least, applying hands-on activities and experiments for tactile learners. Thus, it concludes that multimodal instruction paves the path for attaining soft skills and that soft skills highly influence student outcomes
Awareness and Perception on the Use of Open Educational Resources Among Public Senior High School Teachers
Education plays an essential role in shaping not only one’s knowledge but also in addressing global issues. However, the limited availability of learning resources in the Philippines continues to hinder the delivery of quality education. This suggests that Open Educational Resources (OER) can be a solution by providing free and adaptable materials that can enhance teaching. However, few studies in the Philippines have examined how senior high school faculty perceive and adopt OER, particularly in regional contexts. Thus, this research explores public senior high school teachers\u27 awareness and perception of using OER. Using convenience sampling, the study polled 82 public senior high school instructors through a quantitative-descriptive research approach. Results indicate that most of the faculty are moderately to highly familiar with OER and have an overall positive perception of it. However, concerns persist regarding usability issues, preparation time, and institutional support. The research underlines the importance of focused training initiatives and policies in institutions to encourage teachers to adopt OER further
