Determinants of inter-firm technology licensing in the EU
This article investigates the determinants of technology licensing, focusing on how country-specific characteristics affect technology holders\u27 incentives to sell their proprietary technologies through licensing alliances. An empirical examination of licensing is done using a unique panel data set of licensing transactions involving companies in the EU. The strength of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection, the degree of economic freedom, the level of country risk, and the number of patent granted in the country are found to be important determinants of inter-firm technology licensing. In addition, firms with prior independent experience as a licensor and public companies tend to license technology more. © 2011 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
A Rule-Based Decision Support System for Critical Infrastructure Management
This article presents a new rule-based decision support system for critical infrastructure management based on the interdependencies among critical infrastructures. Unlike the conventional flood front prediction model, the new failure front prediction model consists of both physical parameters and interdependencies among infrastructures, which is represented by a multi-level complex network. This study employs advanced computation methods to build tools for better understanding emergent behavior of water security infrastructure systems for use in developing superior preparedness and response strategies. This study highlights the important role played by the interdependencies among the infrastructures in failure front prediction. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC
Overbidding in cross-border acquisitions: Misperceptions in assessing and valuing knowledge
Many firms competing across borders use acquisitions to gain the knowledge and capabilities that reside in target firms. Assessing and valuing knowledge in the international context is complex and frequently error-prone. The international acquisition literature has not adequately addressed the difficulties of valuing knowledge, the costs associated with acquiring knowledge, the factors behind escalating bids to acquire knowledge, and the impact of knowledge acquisitions on returns. We conceptually explore several key dimensions that influence the assessment and valuation of knowledge and develop propositions positing the effects of predictor variables and moderators on knowledge assessment and valuation in cross-border acquisitions. © 2012 Elsevier Inc

AbstractSince the late nineties, the U.S. has witnessed a boom in Hispanic communication media, a growth which is consistent with the constant and accelerated increase in the population of Hispanic descent, which currently constitutes 15.5% of the total. Consequently, Latin mass media have been growing, as evidenced by the group of publications targeted to Hispanic women, where several lifestyle magazines which identify them as a preferred audience have been made available in the market. The objective of this article is to analyze said magazines in order to identify the type of featured content, and consequently, determine the concept of femininity (and of Hispanic womanhood, in particular) that is ultimately presented in media conceived for them, in theory. Spanish, English and bilingual media targeting Hispanic women are analyzed, and the selected magazines for this study are those which specifically define as part of their mission statement to present a lifestyle to their readers
The accuracy of metacomprehension judgments: The biasing effect of text order
Introduction. Two experiments tested the hypothesis that relative metacomprehension accuracy is vulnerable when readers\u27 cognitive efforts are biased by text order. It is proposed that the difficulty level of initial text information biases readers\u27 estimates of text comprehension but is correctable when more cognitive effort is applied. Method: In both experiments, participants were randomly assigned to read a series of expository texts in one of two text order conditions: easy-to-hard and hard-to-easy. Readers made estimates of their comprehension and took comprehension tests over their understanding of the texts in the series in order to determine relative metacomprehension accuracy. Results: Experiment 1 revealed that reading texts ordered easy-to-hard resulted in lower average relative metacomprehension accuracy compared to texts ordered hard-to-easy. In Experiment 2, when participants were explicitly instructed to put more cognitive effort in to the task, the biasing effects of text order were eliminated. Discussion and Conclusion: These results expand one tenet of the optimum-effort hypothesis that relative metacomprehension accuracy is minimized when reading is perceived to be easy, requiring little cognitive effort. © Education & Psychology I+D+i and Editorial EOS (Spain)
¿Smart is the new sexy?
AbstractThis paper examins, under the Cultural Studies perspective, the results of a content analysis of the first season of the sitcom The Big Bang Theory with the following objectives: to identify whether the nerd and the “dumb blonde” stereotypes persist or if there are variations in the way these are presented, to determine the role gender plays in such classification, and to identify the role technology brands or product placements play in it. The results show a slight variation of the above mentioned stereotypes, a corroboration of the roles traditionally attributed to each gender and the role of technology brands in the reaffirmation of the characters’ identity
Understanding 21 \u3csup\u3est\u3c/sup\u3e century cybercrime for the \u27common\u27 victim: Frances P Bernat and Nicholas Godlove argue that it is time to extend the principle of universal jurisdiction to the typical types of cyber-offences
The innovation and ubiquity of computer connective technology has opened a terra nova for illegal activity. People can socialise, game, bank, and manipulate cameras and locks from any location with internet access. In the United States, youth have \u27hyper-interconnectivity\u27 - they are always connected to the internet for information and social contact (Netburn, 2012). Hyper-interconnectivity connects the younger generation in a worldwide social network: in 2009, about one fourth of the world\u27s population had access to the internet (Lu et al., 2010) and social networking has made worldwide inroads. The new found connectivity allows for the commission of old crimes in new soil: the internet. What this means is that victims are now geographically untied to their victimisers: fraud, theft, or threatening communications have no geographical tether between offender and victim. Notwithstanding its disparate forms, victimisation is commonly called cybercrime. © 2012 Copyright Centre for Crime and Justice Studies
AbstractThis article examines and discusses the results of a reception study of the U.S. television series “Lost” by young audiences in Monterrey, México. The method used was focus groups, for which 29 young university students and graduates participated in five different sessions. Using Cultural Studies as a theoretical base, the following categories proposed in Palmer and Hafen’s model in 1999 served as guides for this research: naive acceptance, sophisticated acceptance, sophisticated rejection and deconstruction. Results indicate that there are other variations of such categories, as well as two others: naive rejection and distancing. This research may be useful for future audience studies, since it proposes an enhanced model of analysis for television viewer’s reception-related discourse
