The role of co-worker and supervisor support on job burnout and job satisfaction

    No full text
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the role of co-worker and supervisor support on three aspects of burnout (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, perceived lack of personal accomplishment) and job satisfaction. The authors argue that different sources of social support at work can influence these three aspects of burnout differently. Design/methodology/approach – Questionnaires were delivered to supervisors of each campus department at two state universities in South Texas asking them to encourage their employees to complete the survey. The sample consisted of 174 personnel. Findings – The results show that co-worker support was negatively associated with emotional exhaustion and depersonalization but not with perceived lack of personal accomplishment while supervisor support was negatively associated with all aspects of burnout. The analysis also confirmed the direct and indirect effects of co-worker and supervisor support on job satisfaction. Practical implications – Due to the detrimental consequences of burnout to employee satisfaction, organizations need to make sure that employees receive sufficient support from their co-workers and supervisors to avoid this burnout problem. Originality/value – Even though the role of social support on job burnout has been previously investigated, existing studies tended to combine three dimensions of burnout into a single measure. Using an aggregated measure of burnout as an outcome variable can limit our understanding about the role that social support plays on each individual dimension of burnout. By employing burnout as a multidimensional construct, the present study can determine whether co-worker support and supervisor support can have a different impact on each of the three dimensions of burnout

A posteriori error analysis of multipoint flux mixed finite element methods for interface problems

    No full text
In this paper, the multipoint flux mixed finite element method is used to approximate the flux of two-dimensional elliptic interface problems. Within the class of modified quasi-monotonically distributed coefficients, we derive uniformly robust residual-type a posteriori error estimators for the flux error. Based on the residual-type estimator, we further develop robust implicit and explicit recovery-type estimators through gradient recovery in H(curl) conforming finite element spaces. Numerical experiments are presented to support the theoretical results

Improving gender disparity in scholarship programs for secondary-level mathematics teachers

    No full text
Gender disparity in STEM Education has been a topic of much discussion among college faculty and administrators lately. Several remedies have been proposed and carried out with little to no positive impact to the situation. This paper will give a glimpse into a scholarship program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) geared towards producing secondary school teachers in mathematics at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), Laredo, Texas. This multifaceted program, the Robert Noyce Mathematics Teacher Scholarship Program (TAMIU-NMTSP), has seen improvements in female participation in all its components and is geared towards addressing the scarcity of qualified secondary-level mathematics teachers in today’s high school classrooms to serve high-need schools. The primary accomplishment in the second year is that all project components were implemented for the first time. This included mandatory mentoring for all scholars, Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) review sessions, boot camp activities, two separate orientation forums for both new and returning scholars, summer internships, conferences, and participation in other related forums. One indication of the success of the program is that our first graduate, a new female scholar, secured her first teaching position as a fully certified secondary high school mathematics teacher immediately upon graduation in the Fall of 2015

Metaphoric reference: An eye movement analysis of Spanish-English and English-Spanish bilingual readers

    No full text
This study examines the processing of metaphoric reference by bilingual speakers. English dominant, Spanish dominant, and balanced bilinguals read passages in English biasing either a figurative (e.g., describing a weak and soft fighter that always lost and everyone hated) or a literal (e.g., describing a donut and bakery shop that made delicious pastries) meaning of a critical metaphoric referential description (e.g., creampuff ). We recorded the eye movements (first fixation, gaze duration, go-past duration, and total reading time) for the critical region, which was a metaphoric referential description in each passage. The results revealed that literal vs. figurative meaning activation was modulated by language dominance, where Spanish dominant bilinguals were more likely to access the literal meaning, and English dominant and balanced bilinguals had access to both the literal and figurative meanings of the metaphoric referential description. Overall, there was a general tendency for the literal interpretation to be more active, as revealed by shorter reading times for the metaphoric reference used literally, in comparison to when it was used figuratively. Results are interpreted in terms of the Graded Salience Hypothesis (Giora, 2002, 2003) and the Literal Salience Model (Cieslicka, 2006, 2015)

Diversidad lingüística en portales gubernamentales mexicanos: poderes ejecutivo, legislativo y judicial

    No full text

    No full text
Press and communication enterprises have changed in recent decades. Large global groups are part of a complex network in which communication is another sector that coexists with other economic and financial areas. In this article we explore the property of Televisa group, paying attention to the Board of Directors and shareholder structure. The objetive is to demonstrate the presence of non-communication sectors in the main media and promote the discussion about the significance that this natural market dynamics has for the practice of journalism and communication

Exact solutions to generalized vertex covering problems: a comparison of two models

    No full text
The generalized vertex cover problem (GVCP) was recently introduced in the literature and modeled as a binary linear program. GVCP extends classic vertex cover problems to include both node and edge weights in the objective function. Due to reported difficulties in finding good solutions for even modest sized problems via the use of exact methods (CPLEX), heuristic solutions obtained from a customized genetic algorithm (GA) were reported by Milanovic (Comput Inf 29:1251–1265, 2010). In this paper we consider an alternative model representation for GVCP that translates the constrained linear (binary) form to an unconstrained quadratic binary program and compare the linear and quadratic models via computations carried out by CPLEX’s branch-and-cut algorithms. For problems comparable to those previously studied in the literature, our results indicate that the quadratic model efficiently yields optimal solutions for many large GVCP problems. Moreover, our quadratic model dramatically outperforms the corresponding linear model in terms of time to reach and verify optimality and in terms of the optimality gap for problems where optimality is unattained

    One-tailed or two-tailed P values in PLS-SEM?

    No full text
Should P values associated with path coefifcients, as well as with other coefficients such as weights and loadings, be one-tailed or two-tailed? This question is answered in the context of structural equation modeling employing the Partial Least Squares Method (PLS-SEM), based on an illustrative model of the effect of e-collaboration technology use on job performance. A one-tailed test is recommended if the coefficient is assumed to have a sign (positive or negative), which should be reflected in the hypothesis that refers to the corresponding association. If no assumptions are made about coefficient sign, a two-tailed test is recommended. These recommendations apply to many other statistical methods that employ P values, including path analyses in general, with or without latent variables, plus univariate and multivariate regression analyses

A revised framework of social exchange theory to investigate the factors influencing residents\u27 perceptions

    No full text
The aim of this study is to investigate the factors influencing residents\u27 perceptions and support for tourism development. Integrating a revised theory of social exchange and previous research has led to the development of a framework with which to conceptualize these relationships. This study was conducted in Lenggong Valley, a newly recognized World Heritage Site in Malaysia. The findings revealed strong positive effects for economic gain and involvement in the planning and management process on residents\u27 perceptions. Community attachment, environmental attitudes, and age also affected residents\u27 perceptions. The results of our study suggest that perceptions strongly influence support for tourism development. In using a revised social exchange theory framework, this study makes a significant theoretical contribution to the tourism and resident perception literature. Furthermore, this study has a number of practical implications for Lenggong Valley\u27s local authorities in terms of sustainable management

    Get PDF
Palabras clave: Selección Mexicana, Brasil 2014, periodismo deportivo, rutinas periodísticas, lenguaje periodístico The aim of this paper is to describe the coverage that the Mexican National Football Team got during its participation in the Brazil 2014 World Cup. Through a content analysis of the four national sports newspapers, the results show – on the one hand – that there is a shared set of routines between sports journalists and their colleagues from different bits, and – on the other – that the language of the stories is full of adjectives.Key words: Mexican National Football Team, Brazil 2014 World Cup, sports journalism, journalistic routines, journalistic languag
