Picking up Where Thoreau Left Off: John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt, an Unlikely Partnership Bringing Thoreau\u27s Vision to Life
In American history, views of nature have changed over time to fit the needs of the society interacting with the wilderness. The literature of each period reflects the shift in attitudes towards wilderness as it progresses from fear of evil lurking in nature to a need to dominate and exploit it for its useful resources. Over the course of time, the need to conquer and exploit nature was rivaled by an urge to protect it. Ideas of wilderness protection were scarce early in the country’s history, but they were not unheard of; however, by the time of Transcendentalism a definite and more visible interest in protecting American wilderness began to take shape. This interest is best seen in the literature of the Transcendentalists. Ideas for wilderness protection existed from the midcentury, but it was not until the environmental reform movements of the turn of the century that Transcendentalist thought, particularly that of Henry David Thoreau, began to be widely appreciated and realized. This was no easy task, but through the work of many environmentalists the efforts culminated in the eventual creation of the National Park Service. John Muir and Theodore Roosevelt, two pioneers of the environmental movement, were two of these individuals, and their partnership is worth special attention for the unlikely pairing and the influence Henry David Thoreau had on both men

Science and Development
Aimed at a contemporary view of science and development that takes into account changes brought about by information and communication technologies, this article examines why low-income countries are in pursuit of the Western way of knowing known as science. Toward this aim, several perspectives are reviewed: modernization, dependency and world systems, neoinstitutional, global systems, postcolonialism, and reagency. The intent is to highlight how each casts the nature of science and its relation to the project of development
Idiom acquisition and processing by second/foreign language learners
Acquiring competence in figurative language is a challenging aspect of the second/foreign (L2) language learning process. A crucial component of figurative competence is the knowledge of idiomatic expressions. The present chapter focuses on the acquisition and processing of idioms by L2 learners. It first discusses the different dimensions along which idiomatic expressions vary and reviews theoretical accounts of the representation and processing of idioms by native language (L1) and L2 speakers. A parasitic mechanism of L2 idiom acquisition is suggested as the most plausible cognitive strategy in building the L2 figurative competence. Factors affecting L1 idiom processing such as idiom literal plausibility, semantic decomposability, salience, and context are analyzed, and their potential role in L2 idiomatic processing is discussed. In addition, factors uniquely relevant for L2 idiom acquisition and processing, such as cross-language similarity, are identified
Nonliteral language processing and methodological considerations
This chapter explores the various methodological tasks employed in the study of bilingual figurative language processing. In the first part of the chapter, we discuss classic behavioral reading paradigms such as rapid serial visual presentation, visual and auditory moving windows, and the newly developed reading integration maze task, as well as eye tracking. The second section focuses on the cross-modal lexical priming task (Swinney, 1979). Finally, we provide an overview on what event-related potentials (ERPs) can tell us about how bilinguals process figurative language. Advantages and disadvantages of these experimental techniques, as well as the implications of task demands for bilingual figurative language processing, are also discussed
Analysis of the Microbial Community Along Three Sites of the Rio Grande by Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis
ABSTRACT Analysis of the Microbial Community of Three Sites Along the Rio Grande by Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (May 2014) Rebeca Imelda Castro, B. A., Texas A & M International University; Chair of Committee: Dr. Monica Mendez In the last decades, the increase in population growth and differences in enforcement regulations on both sides of the Rio Grande may have affected the bacterial composition as a result of effluent discharges, industrial waste, raw sewage outfalls, and agricultural runoff. The purpose of this study was to compare structural differences in the microbial communities of the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo waters based on Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) analysis. Three sites were selected based on proximity to anthropogenic influences with the highest level to the lowest level of potential human impact (from the site furthest downstream to upstream) as follows: Site 1-Zacate Creek Area located downstream of the Zacate Waste Water Treatment Plant; Site 2-Bridge I, located upstream of the U.S.-Mexico International Bridge I; and Site 3- Jefferson Water Treatment Plant Intake located upstream of Site 2-Bridge I. In order to assess environmental factors potentially affecting the microbial composition at these sites, physiochemical parameters were determined such as: water temperature, conductivity, pH, depth, chlorophyll a, optical dissolved oxygen, total nitrogen and total phosphorous. The microbial community was analyzed using heterotrophic plate counts on R2A agar and by PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA gene followed by DGGE analysis. Although water quality parameters were similar, differences between the sites were noted for the microbial communities. Heterotrophic plate counts were significantly highest (p = 0.0006) at Site1-ZCA and the lowest at Site 3-JWTP. Based on DGGE analysis, similar trends were observed with the OTU richness which was highest for Site 1-ZCA (28 OTUs), which had six unique OTUs, and lowest for Site3-JWTP. Possible influences could be eutrophic conditions from a build-up of nutrients including dissolved organic matter, salts or other inorganic contaminants, most likely from sewage and waste water discharges nearest Sites 1 and 2. Results suggest that general water quality parameters may not be sufficient in determining potential anthropogenic impacts on the microbial community, and that other factors not assessed in this study could be impacting the bacterial richness and diversity of the Rio Grande
The Understanding of Romance in Audiences of 50 Shades of Grey
The Relationship Between Motivating Language And Servant Leadership
The purpose of this study is to contribute to servant leadership’s empirical research. Specifically, this study aims to provide empirical validation of the relationship between servant leadership and selected organizational outcomes, such as employee performance, employee turnover, job satisfaction, and absenteeism. Additionally, it is of interest to investigate how leader oral communication affects these relationships. Communication plays an important role in servant leadership. Since it is not clear what kind of relationship exist between servant leadership and motivating language, four competing models were tested in this study to find the best fit and demonstrate what kind of role communication plays in influencing positive behaviors and attitudes and whether communication plays an important role. Data was collected from two countries, namely the U.S. and India, to understand whether the relationship between servant leadership and motivating language is generalizable across cultures, or if it varies from country to country
