Mitigating Flood Peak Discharge with Biopore Absorption Holes (BAH) to Reduce Surface Runoff: Case Study of the Tanralili Sub-watershed

Land use changes in the Tanralili Sub-watershed have profoundly impacted its hydrological dynamics, leading to increased surface runoff and shorter return periods for peak flood discharges. Currently, a significant portion of the area, 75.51%, is dedicated to mixed dryland and wetland agriculture, leaving only 24.49% under forest or grass cover, which has rendered much of the land critical. This research examines the effectiveness of Biopore Absorption Holes (BAH) in mitigating flood risks by enhancing infiltration and reducing runoff. Experiments were conducted on soils with moderate permeability (0.00178 cm/s), utilizing PVC BAH units measuring 10 cm in diameter and 100 cm in length, equipped with biopores of 10 mm. These units were installed in parallel on a 0.23% slope and tested under various rainfall intensities (I2, I5, I10), determined using the Mononobe equation, while peak discharge was estimated with the Nakayasu Synthetic Unit Hydrograph (HSS Nakayasu). The results showed a 58.80% reduction in peak flood discharge and a 62.99% increase in infiltration. These findings underscore the potential of BAH as an eco-friendly solution for flood mitigation. Expanding the use of BAH on open lands is recommended to bolster watershed resilience and tackle the growing risks of flooding. &nbsp

Performance Enhancement of Video Data Transmission in Vehicular Adhoc Networks

The transmission of video frames among vehicles is a crucial global requirement in current road traffic conditions. Video data in vehicles may serve passengers with information as well as entertainment and, crucially, provide the drivers with dynamic information about the traffic conditions on the road ahead, assisting in reaching their destination safely at the earliest convenience using an optimal route. Intelligent Transportation System through its subsystem Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) make these necessities a reality. Inter-sessions carrying video data that exhibit multi-hop scenarios are encountered in the real world when people in a place of emergency communicate with the fire station/doctors/police. In such situations, the earlier the communication can occur, the smaller the damage. This work aimed to reduce the end-to-end delay (EED) experienced in VANETs when unicasting video streams among vehicles involved in inter-sessions by considering the packet delivery ratio (PDR) as a supporting parameter. The technique Network Coding was applied in VANETs and the possible recoder behaviors were simulated. An algorithm – Dynamic Recoder Recommender (DRR) – was designed and implemented to select an appropriate recoder on the fly in a path decided by the Adhoc On-Demand Vector routing protocol. This implementation outperformed the conventional network coding in terms of EED and PDR when applied with random recoders

Initial Assessment of Tidal Current Energy Resource at Aroih Raya, at Aceh Waters, Indonesia using Delft3D Numerical Modelling

Abstract Tidal energy is one of the renewable energy sources that could be utilised to reduce Indonesia's carbon emissions produced in the energy sector. Many straits have been studied for tidal current energy; however, several straits in Western Indonesia Waters have yet to be studied. In this study, a depth-averaged tidal flow numerical modelling is conducted, with the aim of assessing the tidal current energy resources at Aroih Raya, at Aceh Waters, Northwestern tip of Sumatra Island. The modelling employed the Delft3D-FLOW suite, prescribed with GEBCO bathymetry and TPXO boundary conditions. The model achieved a good validation against a tidal elevation measurement and produced a qualitative similarity to the flow pattern recorded in a navigational book. The modelling output revealed the most energetic flow is situated at the bottleneck of the strait going westward and eastward, with flow speed reaching 2 m/s during spring tide conditions. With five cells identified as potential sites, the Sabelle D10 turbine was found to be suitable for the water depth and current velocity characteristics. Preliminary projection revealed that with 25 turbines at each cell, the projected technical resource is 4,993 MWh for a three-month period. Overall, this tidal current can accommodate 2.58% of Aceh Besar's electricity needs by 2044. Keywords : Aroih raya, Delft3D, hydrodynamic modelling, marine renewable energy, tidal current. Full text link
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by an increase in blood sugar due to insulin resistance as well as the decline of insulin production by the pancreas. Quercetin is a flavonoid secondary metabolite that could be utilized as an α-amylase inhibitor and can potentially be used as a therapeutic drug in type 2 diabetes treatment by inhibiting starch hydrolysis in the human body. This research aims to determine the quercetin yield of Allium cepa L. skin waste, evaluate the α-amylase inhibitory properties of the extracted quercetin, and delve into the molecular mechanism of α-amylase inhibition by quercetin. Methods that were used in this research consisted of sample collection and preparation, quercetin extraction, testing for quercetin content in extract by spectrophotometry and HPLC, as well as testing for α-amylase inhibition by quercetin. Quercetin extraction produced 1.52 g of dry extract, yielding 16.8 mg of extract per g of dry shallot skin. Spectrophotometric analysis yielded 3.37 mg of quercetin per gram of dried shallot skin, while HPLC yielded 3.99 mg/g. The shallot skin extract inhibited α-amylase with an IC50 of 348.2 µg/mL. In comparison, acarbose had a more potent inhibitory effect, with an IC50 of 237.4 µg/mL. Quercetin inhibits α-amylase by forming hydrogen bonds with the active sites of the enzyme (Asp197, Glu233, and Asp300)

The present study examined the design philosophy of Taiji with the objective of developing a novel graphic design approach and substantiating its viability through a practical graphic design implementation. Application of the Taiji design philosophy was examined by using the characters from the Three Kingdoms in a graphic design practice as a case study. The objective was to assess the practicality and effectiveness of this design approach. The outcome of the research and subsequent discussion indicates that the Taiji design philosophy represents a novel framework for interdisciplinary investigation, encompassing a design methodology centered around the principles of yin and yang contrast as well as harmony and unity. The present findings hold significance in at least two distinct manners. One of the primary objectives was to illustrate how Taiji, when viewed as a philosophical concept, offers a systematic approach for the development of graphic creativity. Additionally, the yin-yang contrast and virtual-real relationship inherent in the Taiji design philosophy facilitate the transformation of two-dimensional space into a three-dimensional visual design concept for graphic designers. Undoubtedly, numerous issues regarding the underlying principles of Taiji’s design philosophy remain unresolved

Kata-kata kunci: ODOL, umur layan perkerasan jalan, biaya pemeliharaan jalan tol Abstract The Zero ODOL policy has been declared in 2023, but in fact there are still many ODOL violations, particularly on toll road sections. The impact of these ODOL violations is the reduction in the service life of the road pavement and the increase in maintenance costs that must be allocated by the Toll Road Operators. This study is conducted to measure the extent of the impact. Data analysis was perfomed by comparing the service life of the pavement and road maintance costs generated by actual load data from Weight in Motion (WIM) and the normal vehicle load based on the weight limits set by the Ministy of Transportation. The analysis results show a faset reduction in the service life compared to the planned service life due to ODOL vehicles on the toll roads of Jakarta – Bogor – Ciawi, JORR E, and Padalarang – Cileunyi. The impact of this faster reduction in service life is an increase in Toll Road maintenance costs by 17.38% for the Jakarta – Bogor – Ciawi, 13.59% for the JORR E, and 10.89% for the Padalarang – Cileunyi, compared to the normal Toll Road maintenance costs. Rancang Bangun Intensitymeter Berbasis MEMS Dengan Algoritma Pendeteksi Kejadian STA/LTA dan Sistem Peringatan Multi-Saluran

Indonesia is an earthquake-prone country due to its location at the convergence of three major tectonic plates. To support disaster mitigation, a reliable and affordable monitoring system is required. This study presents a low-cost intensitymeter using a MEMS WT61C sensor with the STA/LTA detection algorithm, Raspberry Pi 4 for processing, and a Ublox Neo-M8N GNSS module for time and location synchronization. The system supports online and offline modes with a store-and-forward mechanism and delivers alerts via buzzer, SMS, and Telegram. The WT61C was configured with 20 Hz bandwidth and 100 Hz sampling rate. Tests showed the device detected local earthquakes, calculated Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), and estimated Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI). In simulations of the Lombok 2018 earthquake (M7.0), it produced PGA values of 0.5704 g (23.3% error) and 0.7495 g (0.8% error) against the reference 0.744 g, both consistent with MMI VIII. SMS was sent serially with 5–7 s latency, while Telegram worked in real time. Validation was limited to a simulator with one dataset, without diverse soil or magnitude scenarios. In conclusion, the system provides an effective, low-cost solution for earthquake intensity monitoring and has potential for early warning applications.Indonesia merupakan negara rawan gempa karena berada di pertemuan tiga lempeng tektonik utama. Full text link
Physical activity during adolescence plays a vital role in supporting optimal physical and mental development. This study aimed to assess physical activity levels and sedentary behavior among junior high school students in Thousand Islands regency of Jakarta, Indonesia. The research involved 215 students from grades VII and VIII, consisting of 104 males and 109 females. Physical activity levels were assessed using a modified version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) tailored for adolescents. The results indicated that the majority of students on both islands demonstrated moderate to high levels of physical activity, with a relatively low prevalence of sedentary behavior. These findings suggest that the students’ engagement in active routines is influenced by the geographic and socio-cultural characteristics of their island environment, which promote outdoor and communal activities. However, a small portion of students reported low activity levels, emphasizing the need for context-sensitive interventions to sustain and enhance active behaviors. This study highlights the importance of integrating localized health promotion strategies to prevent the long- term risks of obesity, metabolic disorders, and mental health challenges. The results serve as a valuable reference for health policymakers and educators in designing effective physical activity programs for youth in remote and coastal communities.
