Place and Memory of Palestine : Around Tawfiq Canaan's Traces and His Achievements

    Get PDF
This article concerns the difficulty of preserving collective memory of Palestinian society before the Nakba, the Catastrophe wrought on the population by the creation of the State of Israel, as read through the works of famous Palestinian folklorist Tawfiq Canaan. A former leprosy hospital in Jerusalem has eliminated all traces of its Arab history including its Arab patients and staff. This was the place where Canaan served as director and physician. It is ironic that his legacy here has been completely erased since he was a figure who made great efforts to collect Palestinian traditions, foreseeing that they would be lost or forgotten in the near future. Still, beyond the hospital, there are more elaborate ways of controlling Palestinian collective memory in Israeli public space. While a Palestinian motif may be presented on the outside, something related to the Nakba or the distinct identities of a Palestinian village are prevented from being expressed, as seen in an exhibition on Palestinian embroidery. This article highlights Canaan's works, arguing that they have the potential to resist such maneuvers. Additionally, his articles present specific problems of preserving collective memory, such as “Palestinian Arab House.” In detailing the ways of building houses, customs related to the home, and living habits, Canaan provides rich information on Palestinian habitations. We find the paradox of memory in these efforts “not to forget” - that they sometimes bring about selective memory. However, Canaan’s works are left open in front of us.departmental bulletin pape

An Insight into Asian Trade Regionalism : Japan's Double Membership in the Exclusive Games of TPP, and RCEP.

    Get PDF
The paper is studying a phenomenon of trade regionalism in East Asia, basing on currently emerging mega-regional trade projects of TPP and RCEP. An author attempts to shed some light on Japan's approach towards membership in regional trade frameworks, pointing out the context of both intra- and extra-regional rivalry with China and the United States. The substance of the analysis has been drawn as an exclusive game, underlying evolution of Tokyo's trade diplomacy in recent years to challenge rapidly changing political and economic landscape of the Asia-Pacific region. An issue of membership is utilized to analyze the exclusive dimension of trade diplomacy. Author delivers an assumption of Japan's prioritization of dominating position within regional frameworks, therefore, tendency towards exclusion of the other influential states, perceived as potential rivals over leadership in a given framework. When studying TPP, author raise the question of China’s exclusion – emerging regional rival of both Japan and the United States, while, in the context of RCEP, backed by Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), however, intensively pushed by China – the question of exclusion of the United States. Therefore, author regards the way Japan is playing China card in TPP talks, so as the US card in RCEP talks to build its regional position.departmental bulletin pape

Pain of the Memory, Power of the Story : On Hisashi Inoue's Chichi to Kuraseba

    Get PDF
In this paper, I study about the power of the story in Hisashi Inoue's drama Chichi to Kuraseba. It is difficult to comprehensively perceive the event of atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Countless materials and testimonies have been accumulated to have clear understanding of the event. Inoue wrote Chichi to Kuraseba with the will to collect and read as many testimonies and memories as possible, and to make them into a bigger one. I have been interested in his making a single story by collecting pieces of memories. A created story has more strength, power, and influence on people than pieces of materials and testimonies. Stories often try to compete for the strength and to overpower other stories. Through this paper, I examine the power of the story which arouse pain as well as delight by reading Chichi to Kuraseba. A young female called Mitsue is a main character who feels a debt to the dead of the atomic bombing. She especially feels regret for leaving her father behind. But her father tells that it was his request that she ran away by herself. Since two people articulate the same event from two different viewpoints, there are clash between the stories. Mitsue's father reverses her story from his perspective. Although Mitsue's marriage is suggested at the end of the story, this is not a happy ending. Mitsue's father entrusted her with the sense of obligation toward the dead. That is the severe request that the power of the story brings. Through text analysis of Chichi to Kuraseba, I would like to clarify how the living is constrained by the power of the story as a request of the dead.departmental bulletin pape
