Politeness in an Internet Relay Chat Room
Despite considerable research in the area of politeness, and many studies into Computer-Mediated Communication, little is known about politeness issues in Internet Relay Chat (IRC). This study seeks to shed some light on the area by investigating a series of interactions in the IRC medium. Consideration of IRC itself is followed by an in-depth look at Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Model of Linguistic Politeness and closely-related issues of face and facework. The study analyses three extracts of IRC exchanges obtained from an IRC chat room, identifies a variety of Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, and considers their intended use. Findings suggest the strategies are used: 1) to convey a feeling of closeness (positive politeness) to other IRC participants, and 2) to downplay the seriousness of offensive comments (negative politeness).departmental bulletin pape
Foreigners as a “Lifeline” for the Japanese Fishing Industry : A Study into Coexistence with Foreign Fishers with a Focus on Their Skills
By analyzing individual cases in deep-sea skipjack pole-and-line fishing, offshore trawl fishing, and overseas purse seine fishing, this study aims to identify the work duties in which foreign workers engage, to better understand actual conditions in the Japanese fishing industry that relies on their skills. As a result, it was shown that foreign workers are a “lifeline” for the Japanese fishing industry, engaging in duties that require advanced skills such as the operation of small boats and winches, duties that affect product values such as the processing of catches, and core duties such as fish detection and actual fishing. As skills may be shared and passed on among foreign fishers without the involvement of Japanese, there is a possibility that the duties of foreign fishers may advance in the future, thus creating a more symbiotic relationship between them and Japanese fishers.departmental bulletin pape
The Colonial History Goes Cyber: The Rise of Anti-Zainichi Korean Sentiments in Twenty-First Century Japanese Society
While anti-Korean sentiments have been historically seen among the Japanese, the animosity toward “Koreans in Japan,” or “Zainichi Koreans,” has gained another momentum in contemporary Japanese society. This paper analyzes the recent rise of anti-Zainichi Korean sentiments by focusing on the role of the Internet. In so doing, the ways in which Zainichi Koreans have been dehumanized in Japanese cyberspace are examined to reveal how the Internet is functioning as a mode of production that exacerbates hate-speech practices against Zainichi Koreans. At the same time, this paper emphasizes that the history of Japanese colonization of Korea is a basis for “Zainichi Nintei,” a specific discriminatory representational practice enacted by Japanese Internet users, especially (but not limited to) Internet right-wingers in the country, to disproportionately target Zainichi Koreans. By illustrating how this discriminatory representational practice leads to the relentless production and reproduction of the othering discourse against Zainichi Koreans, this paper reveals the connection between the colonial history and Japanese cyberspace.departmental bulletin pape
Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Germany : Hints from the German Commission for UNESCO to Seikei School
In August 2018, the author visited the headquarters of the German Commission for UNESCO (DUK) and interviewed its staff members on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Germany. The result of research can be summarized in three hints to Seikei School’s ESD activities: (1) whole-institutional and whole-school approach, (2) inter-school collaboration, and (3) non-formal and informal education. Some of the current ESD practices carried out by members of Seikei School actually fit quite well to these three approaches. The German experience tells that ESD is made possible by collaboration of many diverse actors within and outside campus. Comments by DUK staff also underline the importance to re-evaluate conventional educational activities of each school within the context of UNESCO and SDGs. For Seikei School to forward ESD, it is indispensable to reflect on its tradition, and to rediscover the unique value of its past and present activities within the local community.departmental bulletin pape

Detecting Hierarchically Structured Macro-tasks within a Task Graph and Its Task Scheduling Method
One of the key methods for the optimized parallel processing of any program is task scheduling. This intends to minimize the execution time of the entire program by determining an optimal schedule for allocating all tasks, which are processing units comprising the program, onto available processor elements into pieces. Due to complexity of calculation and being a large-scale problem, the optimization problem is extremely challenging to solve with the current algorithms in a practical amount of time. Authors have studied the method of partially optimizing task graph as a technique of task scheduling for large-scale problems. This paper reports on scheduling method that supports hierarchical macro for task groups.departmental bulletin pape
