The Relationship between Pronunciation and Reading Skills in Japanese Learners of English: A Case Study
Get PDFThis study investigates the relation between learners’ reading comprehension and the intelligibility of their pronunciation, an area much less studied compared to the four skills in language learning (e.g., reading, writing, speaking and listening) and their interactions, especially in the context of Japanese speakers learning English. In order to explore whether their pronunciation can be predicted by their reading comprehension, two experiments were conducted: one was a test to measure reading comprehension; the other was to measure the intelligibility of their pronunciation as rated by native speakers of American English (Network English). The pronunciations of segments and intonation were rated separately. The participants undertaking the two experiments were university students in Japan learning English as a second language. Results of Sequential Equation Modelling supported a model where the learners’ segment scores accounted for their reading scores, while their intonation scores indirectly accounted for their reading scores with the segmental scores mediating the two, suggesting that their pronunciation intelligibility does have a meaningful relation to their reading comprehension. On the other hand, not all test items in the pronunciation scores showed a correlation with the reading score, suggesting that the relation found is limited to certain aspects of pronunciation (e.g., contrasts between /l/ and /r/).departmental bulletin pape
Quality of Interaction and Mental Health of Older Adults
Get PDF高齢者の社会的孤立が課題となり、社会参加を促す支援や介入に関する研究や相互作用（インタラクション）の量に関する研究が蓄積されてきた。しかし高齢者のメンタルヘルスに関し、インタラクションの質に着目し、様々な観点から検討した研究は少ない。そこで本研究では、高齢者を対象とした公開調査統計を利用して重回帰分析を行い、高齢者の属性や条件、インタラクションの質の相違が高齢者のメンタルヘルスに与える影響を分析した。仮説は、（1）ポジティブインタラクションは抑うつ度を下げ、ネガティブインタラクションは抑うつ度を上げる、（2）インタラクションの質がメンタルヘルスに与える影響には男女差がある、（3）その影響は配偶者やそれ以外の同居者の有無によって異なる、とした。従属変数は抑うつ度（CES-D）とし、独立変数をインタラクションに関する10 調査項目とし、統制変数を年齢、家族構成、学歴、有職、年収とし、交互作用項を配偶者などとの同居の有無とした。分析の結果、仮説（1）は、ポジティブインタラクションは抑うつ度を下げるが、ネガティブインタラクションが抑うつ度を下げることもあるため、一部が支持された。仮説（2）と仮説（3）は支持された。これらにより高齢者のメンタルヘルス向上のためには、性別や家族構成などにより異なるニーズをふまえたインタラクションの質を考慮する必要があることを明らかにした。departmental bulletin pape
