The Effects and Challenges of Online English Conversation Lessons: Promoting Autonomous Learning and Understanding World Englishes
Get PDFIn recent years, online English conversation services have rapidly gained popularity and are increasingly being integrated into classroom practices in Japan. This study explores the potential benefits of online English lessons in Japanese English education and examines their effectiveness and challenges, with a primary focus on promoting autonomous learning and fostering positive attitudes toward the diverse varieties of English used worldwide (World Englishes). The research draws mainly on the questionnaire results from 112 university students who participated in a course incorporating online English lessons from 2020 to 2023, alongside practical classroom activities related to these lessons. Additionally, responses from 76 elementary, junior high, high school, and university students collected in 2020 were analyzed for comparison. Many participants, from elementary school to university, showed a high level of motivation for studying English and recognized online English conversation as an effective learning tool. However, one challenge lies in the fact that this positive perception does not necessarily translate into regular participation in lessons outside the classrooms. Furthermore, while many learners expressed favorable attitudes toward non-native instructors compared to findings from earlier studies on Japanese perceptions of native versus non-native instructors, some participants, having experienced difficulties in communication due to what they perceived as heavily accented English, became more reserved toward different varieties of English.departmental bulletin pape

The Effects of Using ICT in English Education for Japanese Elementary School Children
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to describe what is required of English education in Japan to meet the needs of a diverse age. Our research group will introduce a new method to English education in elementary schools, which is called “Learning by Storytelling Method (hereafter it is called LBS Method).” We have developed this English teaching method for elementary school students based on storytelling activities using picture books. We will also report on how to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in this teaching method. To increase the amount of English input and output for elementary school students, LoiLonote and iPad were used in review activities for the method. The use of the two types of ICT made it possible to increase the amount of English input for Japanese elementary school students and encouraged them to express in English that made the most of the children's emergent literacy. This illustrates how important ICT is for developing the ability to communicate in a situation-appropriate manner. In addition, Our paper will explain the English curriculum that uses ICT, and report on the results of a questionnaire about learning English with the LBS Method. Furthermore, The paper will also mention the importance of teacher education at the end. It is important that teachers who teach English have sufficient English ability. We should not judge learners' English ability based on whether they get good or bad test scores. However, we need to focus on the causes of students'learning difficulties and train teachers who can provide instruction that removes these causes. Comparison of AC-Side Harmonics in Three-Phase Voltage-Fed Inverters Using a Modified Wavelet Transform
No full textThree-phase voltage-source inverters are widely used in EVs, HEVs, and grid-connected converters requiring high efficiency and reduced wideband harmonic noise. Although conventional two phase PWM schemes can achieve higher AC output voltage and fewer switching transitions than three phase PWM schemes, they often generate wideband spectral components. To evaluate these harmonics, this study applies a modified wavelet analysis that corrects the amplitude characteristics of the wavelet transform so that harmonic magnitudes become linearly interpretable across scales . Using this method, conventional three phase PWM schemes, command‑value‑shifting two phase PWM schemes, and the proposed pulse‑voltage‑injection two-phase PWM scheme are compared through simulation. The results clarify the mechanism of harmonic dispersion and show that the proposed two phase PWM scheme effectively reduces wideband harmonic spreading, prov iding guidance for inverter PWM selection.departmental bulletin pape
Criminal Trials at the Shanghai District Court after the End of World War II: A Preliminary Analysis Using the Historical Materials Held by the Shanghai Municipal Archives, 1945-48
Get PDFThis article uses the statistics of the Shanghai District Court (Shanghai defang fayuan) included in the documents of the Shanghai Municipal Government (Shanghaishi zhengfu dangan) held by the Shanghai Municipal Archives (Shanghaishi dangan guan) as the main historical material, and attempts a preliminary analysis of criminal trials in Shanghai after the end of World War II. Since 2021, the Shanghai Municipal Archives has changed its usage rules. While this has improved convenience, the introduction of the online system has also brought about some drawbacks. Nevertheless, the Shanghai Municipal Archives remains one of the most open archives in China and is an important place for studies of modern Chinese history in Japan. The historical materials used in this article may be statistics on cases that were not very important to the government at the time. However, many of these cases must have been very important to the people living there. Using these historical materials, we can analyze how the Shanghai District Court handled these cases and shed light on the role that the judicial organization played in modern China. The reform of the judicial and penal systems in China after the end of World War II has already been studied, but it has not been fully clarified how the various crimes and lawsuits, large and small, that actually occurred every day were resolved in the courts. Therefore, this article first provides an overview of the documents of the Shanghai Municipal Government, and then uses them to analyze what types of cases and how many cases the Shanghai District Court handled after the end of World War II.departmental bulletin pape
