Sequence analysis of romantic partnership in union formation: Japan as a case
Get PDFThis article solves a research question of whether union (or partnership)formation trajectories show heterogeneous patterns when romantic partnerships are included. To this end, we studied partnership sequencesof adult Japanese as a case (N=3,290), observing their 21 years from age 15 to 35. Conducting sequence and cluster analysis, we identified clear heterogeneity with four distinctive clusters: (1) the mostly single cluster (29.8%), (2) the mostly romantic partnership cluster (10.1%), (3) the mostly marriage cluster (42.7%), and (4) the mostly romantic partnership to marriage cluster (17.5%). The data also showed that the romantic partnership state was overrepresented in both the mostly romantic partnership cluster and the mostly romantic partnership to marriage cluster (13.9 and 9.2 years, respectively) to dominate the clusters. In contrast, it was underrepresented in the other two clusters (2.2 and 2.9 years). These findings suggest that romantic partnership is not redundant but rather essentially embedded in union formation dynamics. On the Notation of {後} and {聞} / {問} in Excavated Texts from the Warring States to the Qin–Han Periods: Toward a grammatological Study of Ancient Chinese Characters
No full textThis paper examines excavated manuscripts dating from the Warring States period to the Qin and Western Han periods, in order to present concrete examples illustrating the actual condition of notation in Old Chinese. Specifically, it focuses on the use of 句/后 to represent {後}, and on the notations of {聞} and {問}.
The former case, 然句/后 and 而句/后, are used to represent the lexical units {然後} and {而後} in excavated manuscripts. This indicates that there existed instances of writing in which ancient Chinese characters, though logographic, did not necessarily correspond to individual words on a one-by-one basis.
The latter case, meanwhile, implies that even prior to the orthographic reform that established the clear graphic distinction between {聞} and {問} in the Qin script tradition, there may already have been, in the Warring States period manuscripts excavated from the Chu region, an emerging orthographic differentiation corresponding to a phonological distinction in the spoken language.
Both cases demonstrate the intimate interrelationship between writing and language, and they contribute to a theoretical understanding of the ancient Chinese writing system as well as to broader studies in the grammatological analysis of ancient Chinese writing.departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFThis paper examines the life of Desiderius Erasmus as a distinguished humanist, rather than focusing on his theological contributions. From this perspective, it aims to uncover the mystery surrounding a wooden statue of Erasmus, which arrived in Japan in 1600 as the stern statue of the Dutch ship “De Liefde”. The statue was kept in a Buddhist temple for centuries and treated with reverence, until it was eventually identified as a depiction of Erasmus. This sequence of events reflects a distinctly Japanese tendency to gradually assimilate and Japanize foreign objects and cultures.エラスムスはローマ教会の権威や腐敗を皮肉った『痴愚（愚神）礼賛』であまりにも有名なルネサンス期の人文学者で、ザヴィエルとカルヴァン、つまりイエズス会宣教師や新教徒オランダ人を通して近世日本にも少なからぬ影響を与えた。他方、日本に近世の到来を告げた使者たるオランダ船リーフデ号は、船尾に木造エラスムス立像を据えており、それはリーフデ号が浦賀で廃棄される際に船から降ろされ、江戸時代の長きにわたり栃木県の曹洞宗龍江院に保管されていた。その間、地元では「貨か 狄てき様さま」と呼ばれ、薄気味悪い木像として子供たちへの躾に使われていたという。まさにこの事実は、異質な外来の文物が日本の社会文化秩序のなかに組み込まれていく典型例である。本事例の端緒であるリーフデ号と木造エラスムス立像の日本にとっての意義と、その背景について、エラスムスその人の人物分析と当地ネーデルラント（フランドル）の地域的視点という切り口から検討する。departmental bulletin pape

Effects of Combined Trunk Rotation and Lateral Bending on Postural Stability on Restricted Platforms
No full textFalls from height remain a major cause of fatal occupational accidents, particularly during tasks performed on narrow platforms such as ladder steps. Although postural stability during upright standing has been extensively studied, the combined effects of restricted support surfaces and trunk rotation on balance control have not been fully clarified. This study aimed to evaluate postural sway under constrained working conditions, with a focus on lateral instability associated with trunk twisting. Ten health y male university students performed a 60 s static balance task under 15 experimental conditions, combining two platform widths (15 cm and 6 cm), three trunk rotation angles (0°, 45°, and 90°), and three gaze directions (horizontal, upward, and downward), while holding a 1 kg load. Postural stability was quantified using center of pressure ( COP ) parameters, including total trajectory length, mean velocity, and sway area. Narrower platform width, larger trunk rotation, and upward gaze significantly increased COP based instability indices. The most unstable condition was observed with a 6 cm platform, 90° trunk rotation, and upward gaze. These findings highlight the biomechanical burden of combined postural constraints and provide ergonomic implications for sa fer work design on elevated narrow platforms.departmental bulletin pape
