    The estimation trend of Malaysian SME occupational safety and health statistic

    The statistic on occupational safety and health has received considerable attention in the SME industry regarding to the vital role of the SME in the Malaysian economy to become a developed country by the year 2020. However, the official statistic specific on SME related occupational safety and health still una-vailable. Thus, the secondary data related to estimation statistic refer to the Department of Statistic (DOS) since 2001 until 2012 were used. Estimation related statistic is adapted from the Global Estimates of Occupational Accidents and Work-related Illnesses 2014. The total number of occupational accident and fatalities average high within ten years. Whereas a number of the accident decrease during 2002 to 2007 with the involvement of 85926 to 56339 cases, nevertheless, four years later trend drastically in-creased. Approximately ten thousand fatal occupational related diseases as 2014. In addition, the cost of compensation claims related occupational accident report increase in 2012 as well as disease and sur-vival recipient. Overall cost of occupational accident increase every year. Presently, this study provided useful hints of implication of ignoring safety to encourage improvement of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), enhance effectiveness of company operational cost, and stimulate prevention at the SME level substantially great approach to the Malaysian economic development

    Physical Exertion, Thermal stress affect the Cognitive Performance on Adolescent Farmers of West Bengal, India

    Background: Cognitive ergonomics relates with studies related to knowledge, knowledge acquisition skills and other factors. In the modern days, the workers are exposed to a work, which demands cognitive skill along with physical ability. Objectives:  Aim of the present study is to evaluate the effect of physical exertion along with thermal stress on the cognitive performance among the adolescent farmers through.  In the present study, cognitive performance was evaluated through physical exertion along with thermal stress among the adolescent farmers. This cross-sectional study was performed during 2017 -18 among the randomly selected 50 male and 50 female adolescent farmers from the various village of Hooghly District at West Bengal, India. Before conducting the study, legal guardian consent was taken. Prior permission and ethical approval was also obtained from local community leaders as well as relevant authorities before commencement of the study. The memory test or cognitive ability test was done by the Immediate Recovery Test. In cognitive ability test, three pictorial cards were prepared having same length; each of the cards had 15 pictorials. Different pictures card was shown to all the subjects for 15 minutes in resting condition. Immediately after 15 minutes all the subjects were asked to recall the pictures within the 3 minutes. Then, evaluation was undertaken in presence of the subjects. Results: The result of the study shows that the farmers performed strenuous activity by which they do the more error in cognitive function test than control subjects. This may be due to increase in strenuous activity in agricultural sector by increasing the heart rate (physiological stress) which may decrease the cognitive function among the farmers in compare to control subjects. Conclusion: The study concludes that intense fatigue producing or highly strenuous agricultural activity lead to an increase in the number as well as in the percentage of wrong answers in the cognitive test. On the other hand, moderate type of agricultural results in a decrease in the number as well as in the percentage of wrong answers and there is an improvement in the cognitive performance

    The effects of leadership on safety outcomes: The mediating roles of trust and safety climate

    Background: In the current study, the mediating roles of safety climate and trust in the relations between leadership styles which are transformational and transactional and safety outcomes which are safety compliance and safety participation are studied.Methods and Material: 101 blue-collar workers from a company in Zonguldak were participated in the study.Results: The results showed that transactional leadership is strongly associated with safety climate. As predicted, transformational leadership is found to be significantly correlated with safety participation.Conclusions: Moreover, transactional leadership is strongly correlated with safety compliance. Both safety climate and trust showed significant correlation with both of the safety outcomes. The mediating roles of trust and safety climate within the relations between transactional leadership and safety compliance and transformational leadership and safety participation are also found

    Work-related musculoskeletal symptoms among Traffic police: A Review

    Workplace environment plays an important role in the health of the working population. The risk of adverse effects on health becomes high with the increase in duration of exposure to occupational hazards. Traffic police personnel are vulnerable to such situations. They undergo various hazards ranging from road injuries, physical hazards, biological hazards, chemical hazards, ergonomic hazards and psychological stress while they are at work. They have to keep on standing on same place throughout the duty hours, which also increases the risk of musculoskeletal problem. There have been very few researches to explore the situation of work-related musculoskeletal symptoms in traffic police. Recently, work-related musculoskeletal symptoms were the main cause of sickness absenteeism, reduction in productivity, and chronic occupational disabilities in traffic police have received much attention. Thus, this review has been designed to help the health care professional and occupational health and safety professionals to know the most prone body areas for Musculoskeletal Disorders so as to plan for ergonomic modification and improve quality of life of Traffic Police Personnel. It will also help in uplifting musculoskeletal health for Traffic Police Personnel

    Photodermatosis and Photo protection in Metropolitan Traffic Police in Kathmandu city

    Background: Police officer serves a vital role in maintaining safety and serve are role model for discipline throughout the world, they are non–intentional type sun exposure(NISE).The objective of our present study was to evaluate photo protector practice, knowledge in response to  Ultra violet Radiation ,Sunscreens and  sun related photodermatosis. Methodology: A cross sectional study was conducted in traffic police officer at different locations at Kathmandu. Data was collected by using self-administered questionnaires and interviewed by Dermatologist to establish their knowledge and behaviour and practice in relation to ultra violet radiation and photo-protection. Result: Out of 265 participants, mean age was 27.1 years. Respondent with graduation and master degrees had knowledge and practice toward UVR, follow by higher secondary education. Regarding the practice for photo protection only 59.6% had knowledge about sunscreen, 39.6% knowledge about Ultraviolet Radiation and 24.9% had knowledge about Ultra Violet Index .Skin problem like melasma, premature wrinkles, and hardening of skin, polymorphic light eruption, burning foot syndrome, dermatophytes, and varicose vein. Conclusion: Traffic police officers showed good practices in term of wearing hat, clothes that cover most of the body parts but poor practice over sunscreen, UVR, UVI. Lectures & seminar regarding the awareness and photo protection practice should be recommended. With lack of awareness among police officers and providing sunscreen for free should be considered by Police authorities. Similarly lectures & seminar on sun protection should be provided in regularly

    Study of the health effects of coal mining on coal mine workers of Baluchistan

    Background: The data on coal mine workers was collected from May 2009 to April 2010.Objective:To study the health issues of coal mine workers. Methods: Two types of data were collected. Primary data was obtained through topographic survey and questionnaire while Secondary data about the health   issues, medical facilities and other allied facilities of coal mine workers of Baluchistan (pakistan) were collected from; Mine& Mineral department of Quetta, hospitals and medicals facilities in coal mine fields. Three mine fields i.e. Mach, So-range-Degari, and Chamalong coal fields were selected and further   subdivided as M1,M2,andM3 at Mach coal field, SD1, SD2 and SD3 at So-range-Degari and C1, C2 and C3 at Chamalong coal field. Results: The average emission of Methane (CH4), Carbon monoxide (CO), and Oxygen (O2) in coal mine fields was 11.8m3/ton, 36ppm and 14% respectively which, exceeded the permissible limits of 1-10m3/ton, 30ppm and 18%. The concentration of coal dust (Carbon and Quartz) was 4-5mg/m3 and 0.35mg/m3 respectively as against the threshold limits of 2mg/m3  and 0.05-0.1 mg/m3  for 8 hours daily and 40 hours/week. Due to high concentration of coal dust the miners experienced headache, irritation in throat, nose  and eyes, drowsiness, shortness  of breath, nausea, pneumoconiosis, tuberculosis, chronic obstructive bronchitis, heart problems, and other respiratory illnesses. The coal  water and slurry was disposed off in an unconfined area causing contamination of drinking water leading to symptoms of indigestion and diarrhea to the miners. Conclusion: Government of Baluchistan and coal mine owners should take concrete steps to improve the adverse health impacts of coal miners.

    Mental health status of workers in selected tea estates, Tamil Nadu, India

    Introduction: The prevalence of mental illnesses among industrial workers ranged between 14% - 51%, which is more than that of the general population. Individual’s psychosocial functioning has an impact on the work efficiency and hence the current study was undertaken to screen workers in tea plantations.Objective: To document the prevalence of probable mental illness and its associated factors among workers in selected tea estates in South India.Methodology: A cross sectional study was done in two tea estates in Tamil Nadu from March to May 2012.  The General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) 28 was used to screen for mental health status. Socio-demographic details, work profile and associated risk factors were also documented.Results: Among the 400 subjects interviewed, 75.5% were females. The mean age was 43.21 (±7.47) years and the mean work experience was 21.38 (±9.31) years. In this study 12.8% subjects screened positive for probable mental illness and 1%, 1%, 0.2% and 1.5% screened positive for the domains of somatic symptoms, anxiety/insomnia, social dysfunction and severe depression respectively. Workers who screened positive for probable mental illness had availed significantly greater duration of leave in the previous year. There was no significant association of mental illness with age, gender, marital status, substance abuse, designation, co-morbidity and stressful life events.Conclusion: The prevalence of probable mental illness was similar to other occupational settings. Management of the associated risk factors may improve one’s work efficiency and productivity.
