    The Virtual Wunderkammer: Integrating Neuroinclusive Design and AI-Augmented Technologies for Immersive Museum Experiences

    The Virtual Wunderkammer represents an innovative paradigm in museum exhibition design, integrating neuroinclusive principles with artificial intelligence (AI)-augmented technologies to foster immersive and cognitively accessible visitor experiences. Historically, the Wunderkammer, or cabinet of curiosities, served as a precursor to modern museums, offering eclectic collections that stimulated intellectual curiosity and sensory engagement. The contemporary reimagining of this concept utilizes emerging technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), haptic feedback, and olfactory-enhanced digital environments to create personalized, adaptive museum experiences. This study explores the critical intersection of neuroaesthetics, cognitive science, and AI-driven interactivity in digital exhibitions, emphasizing their potential to enhance nervous system regulation, emotional awareness, and interoception among diverse audiences, including neurodivergent visitors. The research addresses a pressing need for more inclusive, multisensory museum spaces that accommodate a broad range of cognitive and sensory profiles. Through case studies and technological applications, this chapter illustrates best practices for implementing the Virtual Wunderkammer, highlighting its capacity to transform museums into dynamic, accessible environments that transcend traditional limitations. By situating the discussion within the broader discourse on digital humanities and AI-mediated cultural heritage, this study provides a roadmap for the future of museum engagement. The findings underscore the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in designing technologically sophisticated, human-centered museum experiences that enhance accessibility and engagement while fostering deeper connections between audiences and cultural artifacts

    AI & XR Explorations to Support Social Interactions: Speculative Design for Ubiquitous Workplace Space by and for Neurodivergent Employees

    This study explores the potential of interdisciplinary theories and advanced technologies, such as augmented realities and artificial intelligence, to address the socio-professional integration challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals, particularly those on the autism spectrum. It investigates the design of personalized, functional spaces that integrate interconnected living environments and intelligent systems tailored to support communication needs. Using speculative design methodology, the research adopts an experiential framework to examine alternative solutions, starting with a central hypothesis and testing it through debates with researchers, experts, neurodivergent individuals, and knowledge users. The premise is rooted in the recognition that neurodivergent individuals encounter significant barriers to social interaction and communication, limiting their integration into professional and social environments. This project envisions leveraging Internet of Things devices and immersive extended reality systems to create accessible, personalized spaces where individuals can reflect, feel secure, and engage in meaningful interactions. These spaces aim to foster confidence, well-being, and adaptability while addressing the limitations of existing tools. Hypotheses are informed by frameworks addressing autistic experiences and studies on self-narratives, proposing innovative applications of AI and immersive technologies. A diegetic device illustrates an augmented reality environment allowing users to practice social scenarios, engage in interest-based interactions, and participate freely, while preserving the emotional safety of a personalized setting. The research highlights the potential for such environments to transform social and workplace adaptation, fostering inclusion and employability among neurodivergent individuals. Results and discussions delve into emerging ideas, providing a foundation for advancing adaptive strategies that meet the specific needs of this population. By bridging theoretical and technological innovations, this work seeks to open new possibilities for integrating neurodivergent individuals into society while enhancing their quality of life through tailored, intelligent, and interactive solutions

    If It Walks Like a Duck: Self-Identification, Definition, and Experiences of Non-Traditional Doctoral Students in the Communication Discipline

    This study aimed to understand experiences of nontraditional doctoral students pursuing their PhD in Communication. Although the term “nontraditional student” exists in the literature (Cox & Ebbers, 2010; Stone & O’Shea, 2019), there is little consensus about demographics of nontraditional doctoral students (NTDS), nor their experiences navigating these programs. Using qualitative, thematic analysis of survey responses (n = 52), this critical mixed-method study found three themes— age, experience, and education gap—as defining identity factors, barriers, and benefits. Participants described themselves as nontraditional due to different lived experiences from graduate peers, resulting in feelings of “Otherness” within their programs. These findings suggest that although some NTDS navigate graduate work with added benefits of social or financial support and life experience, they may also face a cumulative disadvantage within academic departments, networks, publishing, and other doctoral labor

    Engraving Goddesses: Hendrick Goltzius’s Mannerist Prints

    This project analyzes the reception of Hendrick Goltzius’s (1558-1617) prints within the court of Emperor Rudolf II (1552-1612), specifically how his technical expertise in his mythological compositions presented bodily transformation as an alchemical act. He produced images that were intellectually coded for a sophisticated audience while simultaneously capturing the viewer’s gaze and emotions. In doing so he created, alongside his contemporaries, a niche market of high demand art and enabled the viral circulation of collectable prints among Northern European elites. Three main topics structured my approach. First, the distinctive development of Rudolf II of Prague’s prestigious art collection, the Kunstkammer, and its relation to alchemy and control over the natural world; second, Goltzius’s virtuoso skill as a “Protean” artist and his focus on transformation in print and its place within Rudolf II’s court; and third, I focus on the mythological influence of Ovid’s Metamorphoses (8 CE) in sixteenth century Prague culture. In addition, a literature review exposes the background of this project and examines methodological approaches. With this project, I aim to contribute original insights to the evolving conversation on Northern Mannerist print culture
