Implementation of a Smoking Cessation Program in a Multidisciplinary Clinic
Tobacco use remains the solitary, most preventable cause of death and secondary disease among patients in the United States (US). Health-related smoking costs are in an excess of $300 billion yearly (CDC, 2018). Addressing this global, public health concern is vital in order to attempt to reduce unnecessary smoking-related comorbid conditions and death. This project is important to scholarly nursing practice in order to reduce smoking-related Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) exacerbations, reduce carbon monoxide (CO) levels, and reduce dyspnea on exertion (DOE) among current primary care smokers. The expectations of this project are for the doctoral of nursing practice (DNP) student to implement a personalized, clinic-based smoking cessation program to reduce nicotine dependence in order to reduce the harmful outcomes of smoking and to improve the patient’s quality of life
TA3 Pubic Symphysis Data
Objectives We estimate adult age distributions from Unar 1 and Unar 2, two late Umm an-Nar (2400-2100 BCE) tombs in the modern-day Emirate of Ras al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates. These collective tombseach contained hundreds of skeletons in commingled, fragmented, and variably cremated states. Previous studies placed the vast majority of this mortuary community in a generalized “adult” category, as have most analyses of similar tombs from this period. We sought to test how adult age estimation methods compare in identifying young, middle, and old age individuals in commingled assemblages.
Materials and Methods We employed Transition Analysis 3 (TA3) and traditional age estimation methods to generate adult age distributions for each tomb. We compared these distributions between tomb contexts as well as by method.
Results Unar 1 and Unar 2 had similar adult age distributions within each method, but TA3 age distributions included significantly more middle and older adult individuals than those generated by traditional methods.
Discussion These results support findings of earlier iterations of Transition Analysis in regard to sensitivity in old adult age estimation, compared to traditional methods. Our findings indicate a potential use of TA3 in reconstructing age distributions and mortality profiles in commingled skeletal assemblages. Increasing our understanding of everyday life in the distant past necessitates better understandings of adult age, and here, we illustrate how age estimation method choice significantly changes bioarchaeological interpretations of aging in Bronze Age Arabia

Role of Pseudomonas aeruginosa Exoenzymes S, T, and Y in the Modulation of Intrinsic Apoptosis in Pulmonary Microvascular Endothelial Cells
P. aeruginosa is the most common cause of ventilator-associated pneumonia in ICU patients. P. aeruginosa uses a type III secretion system to inject exoenzymes S, T, U, and Y into host cells, exhibiting unique effects. Pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells (PMVECs) are used to evaluate cellular changes caused by exoenzymes. ExoY infection of PMVECs leads to cell rounding but does not lead to cell death, unlike ExoS/T. The current study evaluated the exoenzyme-induced modulation of intrinsic apoptosis in endothelial cells. Strain PAK, producing ExoS, T, and Y, was compared to isogenic strains expressing either S, SY, T, TY, Y, or none (Ø). PMVECs were infected with either wild type (STY) or isogenic strains. Post-infection, cell morphology, LDH release, cytochrome C levels, and Bcl-xL levels were assessed. LDH results demonstrated ExoY does not inhibit ExoS/T-mediated cell death in PMVECs. Results indicated PAK isogenic strain infections of PMVECs do not affect Bcl-xL expression. Results suggested ExoY inhibits ExoT-induced cytochrome C release, and ExoS-induced LDH release does not occur via the intrinsic pathway. We report that infection with P. aeruginosa ExoS, T and Y leads to distinct differences in cell morphology, signaling, and death in PMVECs

Impacts of Disturbance and Nutrient Addition on Coastal Dune Arthropod Communities
Coastal dune ecosystems are globally distributed ecosystems that occur from the tropics to the poles and serve as the first line of defense during storms. They are critical habitats for a variety of organisms and also play a critical role in stabilizing coastal habitats. These systems face increased pressure via urban development, recreational expansion, and sea-level rise (Newman et al. 2023; Webster et al. 2005). Insects are vital consumers in coastal ecosystems and act as regulators of plant growth. Low-diversity ecosystems, like coastal dune systems, often contain a higher abundance of low-diverse insect consumers (Ripple et al. 2021), which can be impacted by the addition of nutrients. Generally, an increase in nutrient deposition in an environment leads to an increase in the abundance of insect herbivores, which may increase predatory insects (Lind et al. 2017). Thus, disturbance and nutrient addition may interact to determine community stability and response to future disturbance events. To understand how disturbance and nutrient addition impact insect communities, the author established a nutrient addition crossed with a mechanical disturbance experiment on Dauphin Island, Alabama. The experiment is being conducted as part of a larger, global-scale research collaborative network - Disturbance and Resources Across Global Grasslands Network (DRAGNet)
