Dr. Kara Burns Research Presentation--Mosaics: Fractured Beauty
Dr. Kara Burns, the Archaeology Museum\u27s director and Associate Professor of Art History at South, presents her research on Mosaics: Fractured Beauty, following the Images of Science exhibit reception. Trained as a Greek and Roman Art Historian and Archaeologist, Dr. Kara K. Burns, Associate Professor of Art History, specializes in Greek, Etruscan, and Roman beliefs in the afterlife; she is currently celebrating fifteen years in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of South Alabama was one of the founding members of South’s Museum Studies program. Dr. Burns is an Arizona native (it’s a dry heat) and holds a BA and Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and an MA from the University of Oregon. Her current book, The Iconography of Mystery: The Relationship between Orpheus and Bacchus in Late Roman Britain, combines her interest in ancient religion and Roman mosaics. Her greatest passion is sharing her love of Mediterranean art history and archaeology as Director of the USA Visual Arts in Italy study abroad program that introduces students from disciplines across the university to Italy\u27s beauty and rich cultural heritage

Relationships Between Embedded Tutors and Instructors: Understanding Power Dynamics Inside and Outside the Classroom
Basic writers have long needed support to write more successfully at the postsecondary level. One method currently used is embedded tutoring programs, where students receive the support of the instructor and a tutor throughout the entire semester of first-year composition programs. These programs often provide students with academic and professional support, helping them learn to write for the university and beyond. While these programs have shown to be successful in the current literature on embedded tutoring programs, a gap in the research is that many of these studies focus on student outcomes and student success. Hardly any of these studies focus on the relationships that form between instructors and tutors. This study aims to fill that gap to determine best practices for designing embedded tutoring programs and creating better partnerships between instructors and tutors. A research study was conducted to examine these partnerships using a grounded theory methodology. In this study, 23 tutors and 17 instructors with 39 resulting dyads were studied to understand the roles of tutors and instructors and what interrelationships patterns form due to these partnerships. This research had a couple of key findings. Even thought university rules and accrediting body guidelines primary dictate the responsibilities of tutors and instructors, some parts of their roles are negotiated between instructors and tutors. Instructors and tutors have different perceptions of their roles that impact how well they work with one another. The researchers also found that instructors and tutors work best when there is open communication and collaboration between the partners. Those who clearly establish roles and boundaries and maintain them throughout have the best partnerships. Instructors must be willing to relinquish some of their power and authority to foster a better relationship with their tutors. Lastly, in embedded tutoring programs, tutors grow as professionals learning through a cognitive apprenticeship. Program coordinators can take these findings to help them better design, develop, implement, and evaluate embedded tutoring courses for first-year composition courses and beyond
Survival and Growth in Entrepreneurial Ecosystems: An Integration with Resource Dependence Theory and Entrepreneurial Orientation
The emergence of entrepreneurial systems has become a global phenomenon in the last decade (Cao & Shi, 2021). Entrepreneurial ecosystems are groups of interdependent actors and factors that formally and informally coalesce to connect, mediate, and enable entrepreneurship within a regional entrepreneurial environment (Mason & Brown, 2014; Spigel & Harrison, 2018; Stam, 2015). Researchers on entrepreneurial ecosystems have proposed different entrepreneurial ecosystem models comprising various components and elements. However, despite the popularity of the emergence of entrepreneurial ecosystems, there is a lack of measurement scales to respond to the high demand for empirical research, and the domain of entrepreneurial systems remains under-theorized. The limited research also has not explored the value of resource dependence theory and entrepreneurial behavior integration into entrepreneurial ecosystems. Therefore, this study fills in the above gaps by making four meaningful contributions. First, the study integrates resources dependency theory into the entrepreneurial ecosystems research domain. Second, the study illuminates the interaction between entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial ecosystems. Third, the entrepreneurial behavior approach of entrepreneurial orientation is explored as an enhancement to the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Fourth, this study will extend and improve current measurement scales for entrepreneurial ecosystems. Survey data will be collected from participants located in different regions of the United States. Partial least squares x structural equation modeling will be used to analyze the data and test the hypotheses. Given these considerations, the current investigation will likely have numerous implications for management research and practice
Energy Cost and Performance Analysis of Residential Microgrid
A residential power consumption increases exponentially during peak time, which results higher energy cost compared to the non-peak time. Recently, power companies introduced a dynamic pricing scale to encourage consumers to shift loads to the non-peak time. By exploiting this dynamic pricing, a consumer significantly lowers electric bill. However, the management of microgrid with PV and ESS integrated with the grid from power companies requires sophisticated algorithms that can monitor the power generated by the PV, the power available at the ESS, and the power required by the consumer. An Energy Management System (EMS) can monitor all those variables and decide the best time and flow of power to buy from and sell to the power companies. This research focuses on analyzing energy management system (EMS) strategy to a single residence consumer which configures a microgrid system. This research project is simulating a microgrid in Matlab with different energy storage ESS models with different capacities and considering real physical data of local solar insolation and load power load of residential users. These simulations allow a sensitivity analysis of the consumed power price at several different scenarios to verify the probable most economical cases
