Is it Good to Be Bad? The Potential Buffering Role of Callous-Unemotional Traits on the Relationship Between Trauma and Juvenile Offending
Get PDFJuvenile offending is prevalent, costly, and often difficult to intervene in. Although there are a multitude of factors previously studied that contribute to offending, researchers are still unable to pinpoint all possible variables contributing to juvenile offending. More so, of explored and accepted factors leading to juvenile offending, predictive ability of any specific factor leading to offending is still weak. Thus, study of specific predisposing factors leading to juvenile offending, as well as mediational or moderational variables, is needed. This study explores two previously studied variables in the pathway to juvenile offending: trauma and callous-unemotional traits. Novel study of the effects of trauma exposure, trauma symptoms, and callous-unemotional traits on offending are proposed and explored. Analysis was conducted on archival data of 174 youth from a juvenile court. Trauma exposure and trauma symptoms were assessed with UCLA PTSD reaction index for DSM-5; Callous-unemotional traits were assessed with the Inventory for Callous-Unemotional Traits, and official offending records were collected from court records. Negative binomial regression indicated trauma exposure and trauma symptoms and subscales of callous unemotional traits and trauma symptom subscales were positively correlated. Proposed mediational effects of trauma symptoms on the relationship between trauma exposure and x i offending, moderational effects of callous unemotional traits on the relationship between trauma exposure and trauma symptoms, and a moderated mediation of callous unemotional traits on the relationship between trauma exposure, trauma symptoms, and offending were not significant. The findings of this study indicate further exploration of the possible interplay of trauma exposure, trauma symptoms, and callous-unemotional traits within juvenile offenders. More so, the overlapping symptom profiles of youth with high levels of trauma symptoms and callous-unemotional traits call for a need of trauma-informed systems, especially in juvenile justice

Web and Polytabloid Bases
Get PDFWe analyze the little-understood inverse map of a function introduced by Russell and Tymoczko in their 2019 paper The Transition Matrix Between the Specht and Web Bases is Unipotent with Additional Vanishing Entries. The function introduced in this paper maps form the vector space generated by the polytabloid basis to the vector space generated by web basis. Additionally, these vector spaces come with an action of the symmetric group, and thus the function in the Russell-Tymoczko theorem is equivariant. Moreover, the inverse function is also equivariant. Before defining key characteristics of the web and polytabloid bases and developing the relationship between the two bases, we familiarize ourselves with basic representation theoretic concepts. Most importantly, we analyze the examples of mappings of the inverse function. Drawing from these examples, we formalize our main conjecture. The inverse images of the web basis elements are expressed in terms of the polytabloid basis; and-notably-the coefficients associated with the inverse images are either -1, 0, or 1
Mega-Threats and the Impact of Traumatic Stress on Mixed Race Leader-Member Exchange Dyads
Get PDFThis dissertation explores the consequences of mega-threats - defined by Leigh and Melwani (2019, p. 564) as large-scale negative identity related episodes that receive significant media attention - on the exchange relationship between employees and supervisors in mixed race dyads. Drawing specific attention to mega-threats centered around Black Americans, I propose that race-based traumatic stress leads minority (i.e., Black) subordinates, to experience a decrease in leader-member exchange (LMX) quality with their majority identifying (i.e., White) leader. I further propose that leader intercultural sensitivity will moderate the relationship between race-based traumatic stress and LMX quality, with high leader intercultural sensitivity helping to attenuate the negative influence of race based traumatic stress on LMX quality. Utilizing a vignette study, I empirically examine the novel idea that LMX can fluctuate, challenging the long-held belief that LMX is ecumenically stable
Organized Crime: A Test of Durkhein\u27s Theory of Punishment and Society
Get PDFEmile Durkheim is known as one of the founders of sociology. For Durkheim, crime and punishment were integral features of organized social life. Among his many ideas regarding law, he hypothesized that as societies develop from less to more \u27advanced,\u27 there would be a shift from mechanical to organic solidarity. Durkheim believed this social transformation could be measured by a society\u27s form of law, with predominantly penal law among simple societies and complex societies evolving into a more civil and restorative form of law. In contradiction to Durkheim\u27s assertation, I will argue that societies can evolve to be highly advanced while maintaining a punitive form of law. I will use organized crime groups from different geographical locations and time periods as specific examples of social complexifications without Durkheim\u27s supposed evolution of law
