They Are Not Forgotten: Working with Historic Cemeteries
They Are Not Forgotten: Working with Historic Cemeteries, an Alabama Archaeological Society, SW Chapter Monthly Lecture with Jennifer Melcher, Research Associate at the University of West Florida Archaeology Institute. When people think of cemeteries they often think of neat rows of uniform headstones manicured grass and tidy plantings, however for historic cemeteries this is rarely the case. Historic cemeteries are dynamic environments, they have seen the changes of time, and sometimes the ravages that time has wrought. They require concerned people who want to care for them, time, dedication, and concern. This talk will cover the basics from finding or documenting a forgotten cemetery, through maintenance and upkeep. Jennifer Melcher is a research associate with the University of West Florida Archaeology Institute. She specialties in geographic information Systems (GIS) which led to her introduction to cemeteries and their documentation. In her work with the Archaeology Institute, she has supported Pensacola area cemeteries through GIS mapping and web maps, disaster response following hurricanes and in helping care for some of Pensacola\u27s Historic African American cemeteries. Additionally, she serves on the board of the Historic St. Michael\u27s Cemetery Foundation which provides support including restoration and maintenance to St. Michael\u27s cemetery in downtown Pensacola, Florida. #CemeteriesAreOutdoorMuseums #HistoricPreservation #cemetery #cemeterylovers #uw
Classifying Supersonic Frequencies for Active Acoustic Side-Channel Exploitation
Computing side-channel research explores the manner in which physical emanations from systems can be used to reconstruct data. Acoustic side-channels are those physical emanations that produce a sonic frequency that is subsonic, supersonic, or considered in the range of human hearing [1]. Acoustic side-channel attacks (SCAs) are typically performed passively: a listening device captures aural frequencies from a machine via a microphone that are transmitted to the attacker for analysis [1]–[3]. Machine learning models have been presented to classify individual keystrokes according to variations in acoustic frequency [4]. Furthermore, the SonarSnoop framework presents a novel active approach that involves both generating and recording aural frequencies acting as a type of sonar system to record physical motion [5].
This research attempts to develop a supervised machine learning model to classify finger motion to collect login credentials typed on a laptop keyboard. The active acoustic side-channel has been used to track two-dimensional finger motion, but three-dimensional finger tracking using active acoustics is novel. The model as trained in this study incorrectly inferred labels on unseen data; however, we found and demonstrated that training with more samples per label may result in greater success during inference

Characterization of Aromatic Stationary Phases for Uses in High Performance Liquid Chromatography
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is an analytical chemist technique used to separate a sample into its components to characterize and study a specific molecule or compound. Traditionally, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography in different industries, such as the environmental and pharmaceutical fields, uses stationary phases that are already well characterized, such as the C18 stationary phase for separation. However, aromatic stationary phases have recently been produced, which have phenyl groups bonded to the interior surface of the column. Still, they have not been well characterized because of how modern they are. This project characterized several aromatic stationary phases (Biphenyl, pentafluorophenyl, and Phenyl-hexyl) so future separations can be more effectively performed. These aromatic stationary phases were also compared to a traditional C18 stationary phase. Selectivity tests showed that the aromatic stationary phases were more selective in certain conditions than in comparison to the C18 stationary phase. LSER Analysis that each aromatic stationary phase has slight differences in interactions that lead to the separation of solutes in a mixture. The results found throughout this project can be combined to show the underlying characteristics that yield the best separation for each of the three columns being studied, along with comparing to a more traditional and commonly used C18 stationary phase
