Interspecific Venom Variation Among Three Microsympatric Scorpion Species Facilitates Niche Partitioning, Diplocentrus lindo, Vaejovis intermedius, Centruroides vittatus
No full textScorpions are globally distributed and very well known for their use of venom for prey capture and defense. Despite their abundance and high number of species, very little is known about the venom used by scorpions, and how the components of venom work to maximize the success of the individual. The venom of a species is directly produced by the venom gland, which can be found at the very end of the tail in the telson. To further our understanding of scorpion venom, we generated the first venom gland transcriptomes for three species from three different families, Centruroides vittatus, Diplocentrus lindo, and Vaejovis intermedius, all of which are found within the same region of West Texas including in microsympatry. To do this, we used Illumina RNA sequencing on a total of 22 individuals to identify the toxin families utilized by each species. Data indicates that, even though the species likely eat the same prey, defend themselves from the same predators, and live in the same habitat, they have drastically different venom components. This potentially allows each species to tailor their venom, facilitating niche partitioning, allowing these species to coexist within the same location. Our transcriptome analysis of the venom gland in each of these species also provides data for future researchers who wish to understand scorpion venoms and their potential utility for human applications
Investigation and Synthesis of 2-deoxy-PYR(MP)
No full textCellular energy metabolism is complex, and NAD, or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, plays a huge role as an organic redox cofactor, driving metabolic reactions. The abundance of pathways dependent on NAD has led to an increase in the studies of NAD and its precursors. As a result, NR, or nicotinamide riboside, is now a popular nutraceutical taken to increase levels of NAD in the body. NR is a precursor to NAD inside cells. Metabolites with the same molecular formula as NR are found in urine and blood. Yet, NR is usually associated with these species in extracellular regions although NR is not stable extracellularly. Therefore, it is important to establish whether these metabolites could be species other than NR when studying NAD metabolism and turnover. Such isomers of NR include the three isomers of the 2’-deoxy-PYR series, also known as the 2’-deoxy-pyridone ribosides. These could be the extracellular species that are mistaken for NR. The 2’-deoxy-PYR are proposed to be byproducts of the hyper-oxidation of NAD. Although the 2’-deoxy-PYR molecules can be envisaged as derivatives of the known naturally occurring the 2 ,4, and 6 isomers of the pyridone ribosides PYR series, these deoxy-riboside species have never been synthesized. Due to the molecule\u27s structure, it is hypothesized that it could be a substrate for DNA polymerases, possibly introducing mutations into healthy DNA. Because they are potentially biologically relevant, to test if these species are present in biological specimens, the synthesis of these molecules are of the utmost importance.https://jagworks.southalabama.edu/honors_college_posters/1020/thumbnail.jp

Classroom-based Simulation & Clinical Education Innovations Improve Graduate Education
Get PDFAlthough classroom-based coursework and clinical education activities in speech-language pathology graduate programs strive to link education to relevant practice, gaps persist. Parent-implemented intervention is an evidence-based practice mandated by federal law in early intervention; however, speech-language pathology graduate programs do not provide students with ample opportunities to gain relevant experience. Outcomes from two research studies supported revising classroom and clinical education, increasing educational relevance and professional preparation for students. A qualitative study with focus groups identified key implementation needs that led to the addition of role play simulation in the classroom. A follow-up study supported developing an innovative clinical model to teach parent-implemented intervention. Pre- to post-program survey results revealed significantly greater confidence for students in the program compared to peers who did not participate. Presentation of findings will include engaging conference attendees with the materials for adult learning and coaching used to prepare students for the parent-implemented intervention.https://jagworks.southalabama.edu/cotl2024-talk/1002/thumbnail.jp
Pre to Post Course Differences in Knowledge and Perception of a Careers for Psychology Majors Course
Get PDFThe Psychology Department at the University of South Alabama began teaching a course titled “Careers for Psychology Majors” in Fall 2019. This sophomore level course was created to help psychology majors explore careers options with a bachelor\u27s degree in psychology as well as careers that require graduate study. Students completed a pre and post course survey from their Landrum and Davis (2020) textbook regarding their knowledge and perceptions of career options after graduating. Pre to post course changes in student surveys were analyzed with paired samples t-tests for each question. Increases from pre to post was observed with every question with the majority of pre to post course differences being significant. These results were similar to the results from the first publication of the survey in Dillinger and Landrum (2002). Data collection is currently ongoing. This sophomore level course is benefiting students by increasing their knowledge of career paths post-baccalaureate.https://jagworks.southalabama.edu/cotl2024-talk/1000/thumbnail.jp
An Examination of The Moderating Role of Consumer-Brand Relationships on Influencer Parasocial Relationships and Online Impulse Buying
No full textInfluencer parasocial relationships, illusory relationships between social media influencers and their followers, serve as one of the greatest predictors of online consumer behavior as well as the basis for emotional attachment for consumers, worldwide. The phenomenon has been the subject of much research and the construct that researchers have used to find support for behavior. While research within the past decade has focused on predictors of various behavior, no research exists to explore the weakening effect impact of consumer-brand relationship constructs, brand attachment, oppositional brand loyalty, and brand commitment, on influencer parasocial relationships producing online impulse buying behavior. Limited studies exist to empirically test parasocial relationships and oppositional brand loyalty. This study was the first to conceptually and empirically test this possible effect of consumer-brand relationships on parasocial relationships leading to impulse buying through a concise theoretical framework

Gertrude Stein: Autobiography and Play
Get PDFBy using Gertrude Stein’s two autobiographies, this thesis attempts to examine the use and evolution of play in writing. In The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, play stands within the language and games that Stein invites her readers to engage in. By using Roger Caillois’ characteristics of play, Stein’s writing can be seen as different from the high, serious modernism at the time with writers like William Faulkner and T.S. Eliot. After the publication of Toklas, Stein reverted into a crippling writer’s block because she could no longer find interest in the world to think and write about. However, after an experience with a dead Englishwoman, she was thrown back into a world of questions with no straightforward answer, which lead her to begin writing again. Everybody’s Autobiography is a meditation on these questions that haunted her at first but became a playful mystery to think about
