Measurement of Wheel Skidding on Racing Wheelchairs

    No full text
International audienceIn the context of wheelchair racing, research primarily focuses on studying wheelchair ergonomics and determining kinematic, kinetic, and rolling resistance variables. One factor identified as influencing athletes’ performance is wheel skidding on the ground, a parameter complementary to rolling resistance. The objective of this study, therefore, is to identify, within a laboratory setting, the parameters that influence the risk of skidding in racing wheelchairs by measuring skidding torque. The ultimate goal is to enhance athletes’ performance by optimizing the interaction between the athlete and their wheelchair, and the wheelchair and the environment. In this perspective, four parameters were examined: the type of tubular, the camber angle, the tire pressure, and the load applied to the wheel using a skidometer. This tool characterizes a tire’s grip on a surface by measuring torques. The aim is to develop a system for classifying tire grip on dry athletics track at ambient temperature. The findings revealed that only the effects of load and tubular type had a significant impact on the torque values obtained. The tire that minimized the risk of skidding, among all tested combinations, is the Vittoria Pista Speed 23–28″. Furthermore, as the mass applied to the wheel increases, so do the resulting torques. This implies that a heavier athlete would require a greater force to be applied to the hand rim for the tire to skid. However, it was also demonstrated that the risk of skidding in a racing wheelchair is unlikely, as the torques obtained were over a range of 90 to 190 Nm. These values far exceed those typically exerted by para-athletes, which are a maximum of 60 Nm. The long-term goal would be to adjust the mode of torque application on the wheel using the skidometer for a more realistic field approach

Normal approximation of Functionals of Point Processes: Application to Hawkes Processes.

International audienceIn this paper, we derive an explicit upper bound for the Wasserstein distance between a functional of point processes and a Gaussian distribution. Using Stein's method in conjunction with Malliavin's calculus and the Poisson embedding representation, our result applies to a variety of point processes including discrete and continuous Hawkes processes. In particular, we establish an explicit convergence rate for stable continuous non-linear Hawkes processes and for discrete Hawkes processes. Finally, we obtain an upper bound in the context of nearly unstable Hawkes processes

How pollinator movement patterns emerge from the interaction between cognition and the environment

International audienceNectar-feeding insects, birds and mammals develop complex foraging patterns, such as repetitive multi-destination routes known as ‘traplines’. While this behaviour likely influences animals’ foraging success and plant mating patterns, its drivers and prevalence across species and environments remain poorly understood. Through a systematic literature review, we show that pollinators display varying degrees of movement repetitiveness. Then, using a cognitively realistic agent-based model that we parametrized with data from bee foraging studies, we demonstrate how the interplay between cognition, competition, resource distribution and nectar renewal rate can generate various foraging patterns. Our model predicts greater movement repetitiveness when floral resources are scarce and spread in space, nectar renews quickly and competition is low. These findings challenge assumptions about the prevalence of strict traplining in behavioural studies and random pollinator movements in pollination models. We discuss how a deeper understanding of the diversity of pollinator movements can improve predictions of plant mating patterns to inform precision agriculture and conservation efforts

International audienceHumor highlights the absurd or comic aspects of reality. This process requires the ability to interpret the speaker’s intentions, drawing on theory of mind (ToM) abilities. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between theory of mind skills and humor competencies in typically developing (TD) children and children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).Participants were 7 TD children and 5 children with ASD, aged 1 to 8 years, along with their parents. To assess humor competencies, we developed a semi-structured interview grid for parents. Due to COVID-19, the ToM assessment, which was initially intended to be conducted with the children, was adapted into a parent-report questionnaire. This measure combines elements from the Children’s Social Understanding Scale (Hughes et al., 1997), items from the article by Caceres et al. (2014), and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (Sparrow et al., 2015).Results from the ToM questionnaire show an increase in abilities with age. However, despite a higher average age (M age = 5.9), children with ASD had lower ToM scores compared to TD children (M age = 3.8). In terms of humor competencies, TD children aged 1 to 2 years already demonstrated an ability to understand and produce simple humorous acts, such as clowning and playful gestures, and began producing verbal jokes around age 3–4. From age 5 onward, humor becomes increasingly complex. In contrast, children with ASD were less engaged in humorous play and experienced difficulties in both understanding and producing humor. This study suggests that the challenges children with ASD face in humorous interactions may be linked to deficits in theory of mind, with implications for their socio-cognitive development.L’humour met en évidence l’absurde ou le comique de la réalité.

International audienceData analysis is the final stage after three years of data collection. Our doctoral research project focuses on the appropriation of plurilingual didactic engineering by teachers gathered in a collaborative research project in mainland France. This engineering proposes plurilingual activities related to grammar and written production such as ‘identity texts’ (Cummins et al., 2015). Our fieldwork involves three types of audiences: allophone secondary school students in a specific system for pupils arriving from abroad (UPE2A), ‘regular’ classes in underprivileged (REP), and students in more socio-economically advantaged (non-REP) areas. Language biographies (Castellotti & Moore, 2011) help individuals to become aware of their linguistic repertoire. Activities such as ‘language flowers’, ‘polyglot trees’ (Simon & Maire Sandoz, 2008) or Krumm's ‘language portraits’ (2008) are well known in French schools. Work by Mathis (2016) and Dompmartin-Normand (2019) focuses on writing workshops with plurilingual adults. At the crossroads between these two approaches, we suggest that pupils write their language biography using a plurilingual creative writing task about a character who arrives in the ‘land of languages’ (Berlou and Dompmartin, 2021).The same task is proposed before and after the implementation of plurilingual activities. We focus on 16 texts written by secondary school pupils after this long experience of unusual work for the pupils and their teachers. We analyse these texts by looking for traces of the pupils' representations of their linguistic repertoire and language learning.

    No full text
International audienceThis paper explores the uneasiness felt by students at selective, expensive French business schools when faced with environmental issues. A clinical survey based on interviews, observations, and documentary analysis of schools’ websites illustrates that school education combined with associative activities trains students to deal with contradictions and thus confers a certain privilege. This article suggests the hypothesis that those prestigious institutions respond to the pressure of the ecological emergency but support the deployment of defense mechanisms allowing students to avoid ecological anxiety and access a career as a top manager at the same time. This paper focuses on the way these young people make sense of their actions: they criticize the school policy but they rely on institutional arrangements. They avoid thinking about their impact on society and secure their dominant position while projecting themselves into a future activity that respects their values and the planet.

SUSAN BUCK-MORSS DI FRONTE AL SILENZIO DI HEGEL: QUANDO HAITI BUSSA ALLA PORTA DELLO SPIRITO

    No full text
The article explores Susan Buck-Morss’s major essay, Hegel and Haiti (2000), which challenges Hegel’s silence on the Haitian Revolution and proposes that this revolt may have influenced his famous master-slave dialectic, as formulated in The Phenomenology of Spirit.Buck-Morss argues that Hegel was aware of the events: he was writing at a time when German newspapers—particularly Minerva—were reporting in detail on the events in Saint-Domingue, including the rise of Toussaint Louverture and the Haitian independence led by Dessalines. Thus, the dialectic of recognition may have been inspired—consciously or not—by the actual struggle of Haitian slaves for their freedom. Yet Hegel never explicitly mentions Haiti. This silence is interpreted as revealing: to acknowledge Haiti as a foundational moment of modernity would have meant:– Challenging the Eurocentric centrality in the history of Spirit;– Refuting the implicit racial view of Africa as “outside of history.”Buck-Morss, drawing on Michel-Rolph Trouillot’s analysis of historical silences, insists that Hegel’s silence is an ideological construction rooted in a Eurocentric philosophical tradition. Her contribution goes beyond Hegelian exegesis: she proposes a “reversed dialectical reading,” where revolutions from the margins—like that of Haiti—become sources of thought, producers of modernity and universality. She thus calls for a rethinking of Western philosophy from the perspective of its colonial silences. For Buck-Morss, Haiti is a repressed event—both the matrix of Hegelian dialectics and excluded from the dominant philosophical narrative. Reinserting this event means restoring the Black subject to an active place in the formation of modern thought and exposing the mechanisms of colonial erasure within knowledge production.
