    By the Power Vested in Me: How Experts Shape Same-Sex Marriage Debates

    International audienceIn both the United States and France, each side of the legal battle over same-sex marriage and parenthood relied heavily on experts. Despite the similarity of issues, however, lawmakers in each country turned to different sets of authorities: from economists and psychoanalysts to priests and ordinary people. They even prized different types of expertise—empirical research in the United States versus abstract theory in France.Exploring the legalization of same-sex marriage in the United States and France, this book sheds new light on the power of experts to influence high-stakes democratic debates. Drawing on extensive interviews and ethnographic observation, Michael Stambolis-Ruhstorfer traces the divergences between the two countries, showing why some experts are ubiquitous in one but absent in the other. He argues that lawmakers, judges, lawyers, journalists, and activists covet something only experts can provide: the credibility and aura of authority, or “expert capital,” which they deploy to advance their agendas. Expert capital is not derived from scientific or technical merit alone but is produced through cultural norms, material resources, and social relationships, which vary greatly across national contexts.Through the story of the fight over gay rights, By the Power Vested in Me reveals how and why certain experts—but not others—obtain the authority to shape public opinion and policy.     Analysis of a Fluid-Structure Interaction system involving an Euler-Bernoulli beam model with a free end boundary condition

    In this paper, we analyze a system modeling the interaction between the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in a 2D rectangular domain with mixed boundary conditions, and a structure governed by a damped Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. The structure, which is assumed to be clamped at one end and free at the other one, is immersed in the domain occupied by the fluid. We prove the existence of a local in time strong solution

    Traveling waves in periodic metric graphs via spatial dynamics

    The purpose of this work is to introduce a concept of traveling waves in the setting of periodic metric graphs. It is known that the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on periodic metric graphs can be reduced asymptotically on long but finite time intervals to the homogeneous NLS equation, which admits traveling solitary wave solutions. In order to address persistence of such traveling waves beyond finite time intervals, we formulate the existence problem for traveling waves via spatial dynamics. There exist no spatially decaying (solitary) waves because of an infinite-dimensional center manifold in the spatial dynamics formulation. Existence of traveling modulating pulse solutions which are solitary waves with small oscillatory tails at very long distances from the pulse core is proven by using a local center-saddle manifold. We show that the variational formulation fails to capture existence of such modulating pulse solutions even in the singular limit of zero wave speeds where true (standing) solitary waves exist. Propagation of a traveling solitary wave and formation of a small oscillatory tail outside the pulse core is shown in numerical simulations of the NLS equation on the periodic graph

    Collision Avoidance in Model Predictive Control using Velocity Damper

    We propose an advanced method for controlling the motion of a manipulator robot with strict collision avoidance in dynamic environments, leveraging a velocity damper constraint. Unlike conventional distance-based constraints, which tend to saturate near obstacles to reach optimality, the velocity damper constraint considers both distance and relative velocity, ensuring a safer separation. This constraint is incorporated into a model predictive control framework and enforced as a hard constraint through analytical derivatives supplied to the numerical solver. The approach has been fully implemented on a Franka Emika Panda robot and validated through experimental trials, demonstrating effective collision avoidance during dynamic tasks and robustness to unmodeled disturbances.     Human Robot Interaction for Blind and Low Vision People: A Systematic Literature Review

    International audienceRecent years have witnessed a growing interest in using robots to support Blind and Low Vision (BLV) people in various tasks and contexts. However, the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community still lacks a shared understanding of what, where, and how robots can benefit BLV users in their daily lives. In light of this, we conducted a systematic literature review to help researchers navigate the current landscape of this field through an HCI lens. We followed a systematic multi-stage approach and carefully selected a corpus of 76 papers from premier HCI venues. Our review provides a comprehensive overview of application areas, embodiments, and interaction techniques of the developed robotic systems. Further, we identified opportunities, challenges, and key considerations in this emerging field. Through this systematic review, we aim to inspire researchers, developers, designers, and HCI practitioners, to create a more inclusive environment for the BLV community.     Kähler differentials, pure extensions and minimal key polynomials

    International audienceThe main object of study in this paper is the module Ω of Kähler differentials of an extension of valuation rings. We show that in the case of pure extensions Ω has a very good description. Namely, it is isomorphic to the quotient of two fractional ideals of the value group of the valuation. This allows us to describe the annihilator of Ω and to give criteria for Ω to be finitely generated and to be finitely presented. We also discuss how to relate the module of Kähler differentials of pure extensions to minimal key polynomials

    Comparison of modular multilevel and flying capacitor converters made of wide bandgap switches for new MVDC grids

    International audienceA detailed and comparative analysis of modular multilevel and flying capacitor converters (MMC and, FCC resp.) is proposed in the context of new functionalities developments for new medium-voltage DC (MVDC) grids, taking advantage of the performance and improvement perspectives offered by wide-bandgap (WBG) components. The novelties of this work lies in the generic formalism developed, which enables both structures to be compared on an equal basis, as well as facilitating access to a number of characteristics. This comparison is generalized to the number of phases, number and type of cells, and modulation index. This approach provides a clear overall understanding of the benefits and drawbacks of the two structures in terms of structure sophistication, power conversion capabilities, control complexity and operating mode freedom. The study highlights the flexibility and the greater power range of the MMC, despite being more complex to control and bulkier than the FCC

    Bringing the campaign closer to the voters: Facebook in partisan-managed campaigning in France

    International audienceAbstract During presidential campaigns, party members often operate Facebook pages or groups concurrently with the official communications of their respective political parties. However, there is limited evidence regarding the true motivations of these partisans, and how their efforts supplement the online strategies of the parties. Our study is based on interviews conducted with party members who ran Facebook pages to support a candidate during the 2022 French presidential campaign. It sheds light on how they managed their Facebook pages, often autonomously, to serve as supplementary tools to their grassroots tactics and ultimately to bring the campaign closer to the voters. This finding highlights the emergence of a hybrid model of online campaign organization, the partisan-managed campaigning model, which challenges both the traditional top-down model, in which the campaign is managed by the central party, and the more recent citizen-initiated campaign model
