    Gentilly : A New Orleans Plantation in the French Atlantic World, 1818-1851

    International audienceBetween 1818 and 1851, Auvignac Dorville, a Louisiana Creole, managed the day-to-day operations of the Gentilly plantation, located a few miles from New Orleans along Bayou St. John. The plantation belonged to Henri and Marguerite de Sainte-Gême, who entrusted their property to Dorville's careful supervision when they left Louisiana for the Sainte-Gême ancestral home in France. Dorville wrote to the Sainte-Gêmes for more than thirty years, offering detailed glimpses of the plantation's crops, financial situation, environmental challenges, and events surrounding the two dozen enslaved men, women, and children working there. Translated and annotated by Nathalie Dessens and Virginia Meacham Gould, Dorville's letters illuminate nineteenth-century life on an urban plantation that connected the rural world of Louisiana to the urban sphere of New Orleans and reached far into the Atlantic world

In this note, we broaden the scope of their techniques by removing one of their assumptions and allowing the complex structure to vary. We apply our results to various families of canonical K\"ahler metrics

    Le choeur clos de la cathédrale d'Albi et le travail des imagiers: une étude pluridisciplinaire

    International audienceThe choir of the canons of Albi Cathedral is one of the most important architectural and sculptural works of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance in France. While the commission for the project undoubtedly belongs to Louis I d'Amboise, Bishop of Albi from 1474 to 1503, the period of construction of the enclosure has recently been reassessed as late 15th-early 16th century, based both on historical records and on stylistic comparisons of the Flamboyant Gothic architecture of the choir with other French projects.Little is known about the work carried out on the choir enclosure of Albi before the French Revolution. Most of the choir sculpture escaped the revolutionaries' hammers thanks to the intervention of a prominent citizen of Albi, but the sculptures of the rood screen were not spared. After the French Revolution and until the early 2010s, only minor work was carried out on the canons' choir.From 2014 to 2015, the straight bays inside the choir were restored under the supervision of Pierre-Yves Caillault. To refine the restoration protocols and cost estimates for the rest of the enclosure, the CRMH (Regional Commission for Historical Monuments) commissioned a diagnostic study, combined with general dusting, to a team of restorers led by Dominique Faunières (September 2021–Autumn 2022).The study has already yielded valuable information on the technical characteristics of the sculptures and, more generally, on the execution of a large-scale sculpture and polychromy project at the end of the Middle Ages

    Analysis and stabilization of a model of population dynamics with age structure and diffusion

    International audienceWe analyze a system modeling the evolution of an age and spatially structured population (of Lotka-McKendrick type). We study it by first writing it in an abstract form using several operators. We show that the semigroup associated with the corresponding system is differentiable. Using this property, we show how to prove the exponential stabilization with a finite-dimensional feedback control. We consider two types of controls: one that acts directly on the main equation of evolution and one that acts on the birth equation. One of the main difficulties in the analysis of this system is that the operators involved in the system can depend on the age variable. We use in particular a parabolic evolution operator associated with the main operator of the system. Our stabilization result shows how to extend the framework associated with parabolic system to the case of differentiable semigroups

    Transparent conductive electrodes based on GaAs-metal deep sub-wavelength high contrast grating

    International audienceA highly transparent and conductive electrode formed of a GaAs-based monolithic high-contrastgrating combined with an array of metal nanowires (mMHCG) operating in the near-infrared rangeis presented. Designed for the transmission of selected TE or TM polarized light around the 940 nmwavelength, the fabricated mMHCG demonstrates a remarkable light transmittance level of 85%,surpassing the Fresnel threshold by 16%, which corresponds to a relative transmittance of 122%with respect to the transmission through plain GaAs-air interface. Additionally, these structuresexhibit low sheet resistance of 1.4 Ω/sq. We achieve this performanceby fabricating semiconductordeep subwavelength monolithic high-contrast gratings integrating metal stripes placed either in therecesses or on top of the etched semiconductor gratings. The high transmittance of polarised lightthrough the mMHCG is demonstrated for the first time in the near-infrared range thanks to lowquality factor resonance tunnelling the light through semiconductor stripes in the TE configurationand through the air slots between semiconductor stripes in the TM configuration. This work servesas conclusive evidence of mMHCG's extraordinary transparency and low sheet resistance, despitethe significant challenges in the near-infrared spectral range posed by high free carrier absorptionand the nanoscale precision required for mMHCG fabrication. This work demonstrates theextension of the mMHCG approach as an efficient transparent conductive electrode intooptoelectronic devices such as LEDs, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), andphotodetector

    Experimental Validation of Sensitivity-Aware Trajectory Planning for a Redundant Robotic Manipulator Under Payload Uncertainty

    International audienceIn this paper, we experimentally validate the recent concepts of closed-loop state and input sensitivity in the context of robust manipulation control for a robot manipulator. Our objective is to assess how optimizing trajectories with respect to sensitivity metrics can enhance the closed-loop system's performance w.r.t. model uncertainties, such as those arising from payload variations during precise manipulation tasks. We conduct a series of experiments to validate our optimization approach across different trajectories, focusing primarily on evaluating the precision of the manipulator's end-effector at critical moments where high accuracy is essential. Our findings offer valuable insights into improving the closed-loop robustness of the robot's state and inputs against physical parametric uncertainties that could otherwise degrade the system's performance
