    From Brexit to What Comes Next: Pro-European Grassroots Activism and the Future of Britain

    International audienceWhen the UK left the European Union in 2020, Brexit was widely framed as a moment of political rupture that foreclosed alternative European futures for Britain, while pro-European activism was often portrayed as reactive, defensive, and lacking a coherent forward-looking project. This paper challenges that interpretation by examining how pro-European grassroots organisations have actively articulated and sustained future-oriented visions of Britain’s place in Europe through campaigns centred on research cooperation, youth mobility, and transnational civic engagement.Drawing on semi-structured interviews with leaders of the European Movement (EMUK) and its youth affiliate, the Young European Movement (YEM), the paper analyses grassroots mobilisation around the UK’s re-association with Horizon Europe and, more recently, Erasmus+. It shows how these actors frame European programmes not merely as technical policy instruments, but as symbolic infrastructures of an alternative post-Brexit future, grounded in internationalism, educational mobility, and democratic openness. While the UK’s rejoining of Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ represents a partial and contingent policy outcome, the analysis demonstrates how these developments have been actively politicised from below as steppingstones toward broader projects of re-Europeanisation.By foregrounding the perspective of locally embedded and youth-led organisations, this paper shows how pro-European grassroots activism operated as a space in which alternative futures for Britain are imagined, articulated, and kept alive in the wake of Brexit. Rather than fading after the referendum, activists have transformed opposition to Brexit into concrete forms of mobilisation that advance a different vision of the UK’s future — one centred on international cooperation, mobility, and civic engagement. In doing so, grassroots mobilisation contributes to wider debates about Britain’s future place in Europe and the world by sustaining and normalising alternative trajectories at a time when dominant political narratives continue to emphasise separation and national closure

    International trade in times of financial distress: How the Great Depression reshaped Banca Commerciale Italiana’s acceptance activity in New York (1926-1931)

    International audienceThe 2008 Global Financial Crisis has drawn immediate comparisons with the Great Depression, both causing severe disruptions to international trade. Yet, the financing of Italian trade during late 1920s and early 1930s has received relatively little attention. This article analyses a novel dataset, manually compiled from archival sources, containing city-level, high-frequency data from the New York branch of Banca Commerciale Italiana (BCI-NY) between 1926 and 1931. By examining the acceptance business before and after the onset of Great Depression, the study highlights how BCI-NY reoriented its operations under financial distress. The data’s granularity allows a detailed mapping of acceptance activities across cities and counterparties, providing insights into intra-year liquidity dynamics. The findings show that, across the two periods, the bank diverted its business toward foreign rather than Italian traders, offering fresh evidence on how banking crises are associated with distortions in the trade-finance business and with heterogeneous outcomes across borrowers in the short-run

    Control Traffic Dataset and Generation Framework for 5G Networks

    The changes introduced by 5G significantly expand the attack surface of mobile networks and bring new vulnerabilities, particularly within the control traffic. To address these risks, numerous studies have proposed anomaly detection models. However, the development and evaluation of such solutions are hindered by the lack of publicly available control traffic datasets. As a result, current anomaly detection tools must generate their own data, which hinders the reproducibility of results and complicates comparisons between different approaches. To address this gap, we introduce a set of tools and a methodology designed to generate diversified and realistic datasets for 5G anomaly detection. Our tools are open and collaborative by design, enabling progressive extension to incorporate a wider variety of plausible messages and interactions. As part of this effort to unite the 5G anomaly detection community, we also provide an initial version of a dataset that is diverse, reproducible, and designed to co-evolve through community contributions

    Hecke cycles on moduli of vector bundles and orbital degeneracy loci

    International audienceGiven a smooth genus two curve C, the moduli space SU_C (3) of rank three semistable vector bundles on C with trivial determinant is a double cover in P^8 branched over a sextic hypersurface, whose projective dual is the famous Coble cubic, the unique cubic hypersurface that is singular along the Jacobian of C. In this paper we continue our exploration of the connections of such moduli spaces with the representation theory of GL_9, initiated in [GSW13] and pursued in [GS15, RS18, RS19, BMT21]. Starting from a general trivector v in ∧^3 C^9 , we construct a Fano manifold D_Z_10 (v) in G(3, 9) as a so-called orbital degeneracy locus, and we prove that it defines a family of Hecke lines in SU_C (3). We deduce that D_Z_10 (v) is isomorphic to the odd moduli space SU_C (3, O_C (c)) of rank three stable vector bundles on C with fixed effective determinant of degree one. We deduce that the intersection of D_Z_10 (v) with a general translate of G(3, 7) in G(3, 9) is a K3 surface of genus 19

    Bringing NLP Explainability to Critical Sectors: A Case Study on NOTAMs in Aviation

    International audienceThe aviation industry operates within a highly critical and regulated context, where safety and reliability are paramount. As Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems become increasingly integrated into such domains, ensuring their trustworthiness and transparency is essential. This paper addresses the importance of explainability (XAI) in critical sectors like aviation by studying NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen), a core component of aviation communication. We provide a comprehensive overview of XAI methods applied to NLP classification task, proposing a categorization framework tailored to practical needs in critical applications. We also propose a new method to create aggregated explanations from local attributions. Using real-world examples, we demonstrate how XAI can uncover biases in models and datasets, leading to actionable insights for improving both. This work highlights the role of XAI in building safer and more robust NLP systems for critical sectors and also shows that academic efforts must be pursued to achieve trust in models and XAI itself

    Simplifier l'acquisition et l'étude des données : l'exemple des habitats ruraux du haut Moyen Âge en France

    International audienceDans le cadre d’une thèse portant sur l’étude comparative des trajectoires de l’habitat rural en France au haut Moyen Âge, il a été nécessaire de concevoir une base de données spatialisée permettant de centraliser et analyser l’ensemble des informations qualitatives et quantitatives relatives aux occupations de la période étudiée.Le recours à des logiciels propriétaires à écosystème fermé, tel que FileMaker, longtemps utilisé en archéologie, constitue une solution efficace pour la gestion des données, mais se révèle inadapté à une intégration spatiale et à des analyses statistiques approfondies, obligeant ainsi à multiplier les exports vers d’autres logiciels. Ces manipulations répétées (vers QGIS, FileMaker ou RStudio, selon les besoins) peuvent entraîner des divergences entre les jeux de données, notamment en raison des exports successifs.Pour remédier à ces difficultés, j’ai choisi de développer une base de données PostgreSQL associée à QGIS via PostGIS, connectée également à Rstudio et à Django. Cette configuration me permet de relier directement mes données aux outils d’analyses statistiques, aux traitements spatiaux et à une interface web, tout en assurant une saisie unique de l’information, facilitant ainsi les analyses
