This past year presented unique challenges as we continued to navigate the changes brought by the Kennedy Library Transformation Project. We successfully relocated our collections and services to temporary locations, to accommodate the massive work to renovate our 44-year-old building. While this transition brought about changes in our physical space, it underscored the unwavering dedication and adaptability of our staff and the resilience of our library community. Wind Turbine Rotor Test Stand
Dr. Lemieux and the mechanical engineering department at Cal Poly are renowned for the countless projects that allow students to be a part of hands-on learning and the “Learn by Doing” experience. One such experience is the wind energy class that requires students to design, build, and test wind turbine rotors; however, a test stand for these rotors is needed. Dr. Lemieux and the senior project team will design and build a test stand that will enable the simultaneous testing of two student-designed rotors at the existing wind turbine site. In addition to energy measurement, Lemieux emphasizes the importance of safety for the project. The team developed a design which consists of two independent test stands, each with a generator that is mounted on the existing platform, connected to their own control panels and heaters. A hub was designed to allow for easy attachment of student rotors which were installed on each generator. The control panels measure power, current, voltage, and energy, as well as have an off switch for emergency stop capabilities. The energy from the turbines is safely dissipated by small heaters. The design was validated using FEA and physical testing to ensure each component functions as designed and are safe. Tests were run on the heaters’ capacities, the time it took to attach and detach rotors to the universal hub, the energy measurement capabilities of the test stand, and the similarity between each test stand. Advanced Variable Data Publishing: VDP Application for Selkirk Sport
Personalization acknowledges each customer\u27s uniqueness by offering tailored products that match their preferences. It creates relevant, individualized interactions that enhance the customer experience. Selkirk Sport began as a small startup specializing in pickleball paddles and accessories, founded by my family members—Jim, Mike, and Rob Barnes. Their passion for the sport quickly became my own! As Selkirk has grown, there is an opportunity to enhance personalization in its messaging to better engage recipients and drive stronger responses. For my senior project, I analyzed Selkirk’s past marketing efforts and developed a campaign that leverages consumer data and personalized Variable Data Publishing (VDP) across online experiences, SMS/email marketing, and direct mailers. This project combines creative marketing with data-driven solutions, demonstrating how VDP can enhance real-world marketing effectiveness
Protein Digestibility Impacted by Bacillus Coagulans, Pasteurization and Protein Source in Ready-To-Drink Protein Beverages
The goal of this study was to assess how to maximize the digestibility of protein in protein beverages utilizing various protein sources, differing temperature/storage combinations, and the addition of probiotics (Bacillus coagulans). The protein sources used included 3 milk proteins and 2 plant protein sources (micellar casein, milk protein concentrate, reduced-calcium milk protein concentrate, pea protein isolate, and soy protein isolate). Soy protein isolate was chosen because it is readily available and commonly used as a plant protein alternative. Pea protein isolate was chosen because it is a non-allergen, and similarly, it is readily available. Milk protein concentrates consist of the two proteins in milk, whey protein and casein. Micellar casein is the primary protein in milk and the precursor for cheese. Casein is known as a “slow-digesting” protein whereas whey protein is known as a “fast-digesting” protein. Whey protein is readily available because it is a by-product of cheese-make, therefore it is well-researched in sports recovery beverages. For this study, micellar casein was chosen instead of whey protein to investigate its efficacy and digestibility compared to other products. Previous studies have shown MPC has good storage stability; reduced-calcium MPC is a newer product on the market, and evidence suggests improved solubility in protein beverages. Bacillus coagulans was chosen for this study because it is a widely used probiotic in food products. It is an endospore-former which makes it heat resistant; this is useful in food products that need to undergo heat treatments, like most RTD protein beverages
Effects of Spirulina and Nannochloropsis Supplementations on the Meat Quality and Sensory Properties of Broiler Carcasses
Microalgae are a promising feed ingredient due to their high content of proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, vitamins, pigments, and enzymes. This study evaluated the effects of algae as a dietary supplementation on the appearance, quality, and sensory attributes of broiler carcasses. In each of experiment I and II, a total of 54 Ross-708 broilers were randomly obtained from the pool of 270 broilers in the 18 floor pens of soybean-mealbased diets at 0, 2.5%, and 5% Spirulina (Experiment I) and Nannochloropsis (Experiment II) supplements in the Poultry Unit at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA). Broiler carcasses were processed traditionally in the Meat Processing Center at Cal Poly. Both microalgae showed no significant effects on chilling yield, sarcomere length, pH, flavor, aroma, aftertaste, and overall sensory acceptability (P \u3e 0.05). Spirulina supplementation led to a linear increase in the intensity of yellowness (b*) in both carcass skin and skinless fillets (P \u3c 0.05) as the amount of supplement increased. In sensory evaluations, a higher appearance score was noted at the 2.5% Spirulina level compared to both the control and the 5% Spirulina group. Additionally, a lower juiciness score was recorded at the 5% Spirulina level compared to the control and the 2.5% group (P \u3c 0.05). Nannochloropsis significantly improved cooking yield, shear force, and sensory tenderness score at 5% compared to the control (P \u3c 0.05), with an intermediate value found at 2.5% except for tenderness. In color evaluation, no color v difference was observed regardless of supplementation level (P \u3c 0.05), except for the lightness (L*) at 5%. These results suggest that the addition of Spirulina at 2.5 - 5 % showed no obvious benefits except for the intensity of yellowness on carcasses. However, Nannochloropsis at 5% enhanced both tenderness and the cooking yield of breast fillets, offering some benefits to the poultry industry and consumers
Investigating the Effects of Hepatocyte Growth Factor on Primary Myoblast Proliferation
Peripheral artery occlusive disease (PAOD) is a progressive vascular condition that affects over 200 million people worldwide and approximately 8 million in the United States. It is characterized by atherosclerotic narrowing of peripheral arteries, leading to reduced blood flow, ischemia, and, in severe cases, tissue loss and limb amputation. Although surgical revascularization is the gold standard, many patients—particularly those with comorbidities like diabetes— continue to experience poor outcomes, emphasizing the need for alternative therapies. One promising strategy is to enhance collateral arteriogenesis, the remodeling and enlargement of collateral arterioles that naturally bypass occluded vessels. Satellite cells (SCs), which give rise to myogenic precursor cells, such as myoblasts, promote vascular regeneration through cytokine secretion and stimulation of arteriogenesis. However, laborious myofiber isolations which often yield relatively low numbers of primary myoblasts pose an obstacle to conducting cell transplantation studies. In this study, we supplemented culture media with hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)—a known activator of quiescent SCs—that we hypothesized could enhance myoblast yield. Myofibers were isolated from the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle of C57BL/6 mice, and cultures were treated with one of three conditions: 0.1µg∙mL-1 bFGF alone, 10ng∙mL-1 HGF, or a combination of both. Myoblast proliferation was assessed daily via ImageJ based counts and on Day 5 via automated cell counting. bFGF-treated cultures had significantly greater proliferation on Days 4 and 5 compared to both HGF alone and the combination treatment; although the combination group followed a similar proliferative trend to bFGF, it did not surpass bFGF alone in effectiveness, suggesting a lack of synergy or potential antagonism. Future studies could explore optimization of HGF dosing and timing, as well as assess myogenic phenotype using RT-qPCR for markers such as MyoD and Pax7. Refinements to quantification methods, including DNA-quantification assays, may also address limitations in manual cell counting
SPOS: An Attestation Solution for the Detection and Mitigation of Point of Sale Malware
Securing 95% of card present transactions, accounting for billions of transactions a year, has made EMV the premier protocol for card-based payment. Created by and named after Europay, Mastercard, and Visa, the EMV protocol provides multiple solutions to resolve security concerns with the outdated, swipe-based, magnetic stripe payment. Such solutions are Chip and PIN which provides a more secure transaction at a significant time cost and EMV contactless which provides improved security to Chip and PIN at greater ease of use with its quick, tap-to-pay based payment. However, regardless of how secure the EMV protocol makes the card side of a transaction, little has been done for the Point of Sale (POS) devices involved. While the EMV protocol ensures the validity of the card and the identity of the cardholder, no such checks are made for the POS device during the transaction. All types of card-based payment, EMV or not, are simply at the mercy of how merchants choose to secure their POS devices as there is no choice but to assume a POS device is secure if a transaction is to occur. While this may seem to be a reasonable assumption, the infamy of POS malwares like PoSeidon and BlackPOS prove the danger of relying solely on merchants for POS security. Hence, this thesis presents Secure Point of Sale (SPOS) as a solution leveraging a Hardware Root of Trust (HRoT) installed in the POS device to provide attestation updates to a verification entity that will determine POS integrity. Thus, freeing POS security from being solely reliant on the merchant

Furthermore, we will outline the various customers, their requirements, and our plan to address these necessary or desirable specifications. Lastly, we will discuss how we plan to execute the entire design process to achieve a functional device
