    The Chumash War: Contested Memories of Forced Labor, Rebellion, and Counter-Revolution in the California Missions

    The Chumash War remains an under-explored flashpoint in California history and the history of the Mission system of Alta California for myriad reasons, which include a lack of contemporary documentation relating the motivations of the Chumash as well as a broader silencing of indigenous voices in state and colonial Spanish and U.S. history. For the hegemonic centers of power present at the time, the Catholic Missionaries and the Mexican Government, the impetus to ignore the grievances of Chumash and enact a counter-revolution couldn’t be clearer—both institutions depended directly on the forced labor and production of the Chumash at Missions Santa Barbara, Ines, and La Purisima. In the broader historiographic literature, however, the need to downplay the Chumash desire for freedom from the yolk of European colonialism and focus instead on natural phenomena, inter-personal conflicts, and narratives from biased primary sources such as Franciscan missionaries belies the larger cultural hegemony of a settler-colonial project. Ignoring the political realities of the Chumash War in the scholarship has served as detriment to the collective memory of the Mission era, which has only begun to be remedied by the most recent scholarship. A new study of the Chumash War that centers the Chumash and places their actions within the context of a century of emancipatory revolution and anti-colonial struggle is a necessary and forthcoming step in the scholarship, especially considering the prominence of the Mission era in California state history, from the elementary school curriculum and beyond

    Loving Blackness: A Sense Experience

    The late bell hooks framed feminist pedagogies as a set of practices and systems that provide a description of feminism, a feminist learning environment, and ways to cultivate a community that is ready for feminist instruction. Using intersectionality, hooks (1992) discussed “loving blackness” as a representational and destabilizing practice to de-center whiteness. hooks (1992, 20) writes, “loving blackness as a political resistance transforms our ways of looking and being, and thus creates conditions necessary for us to move against the forces of domination and death and reclaim black life.” I propose a black feminist praxis teaching tool, “a sense experience,” in support of hooks’ “loving blackness” concept. My teaching tool is a visual and conceptual framing exercise where students locate an image, sound, and feeling that encapsulates Blackness. A sense experience encourages students to analyze the object to discuss black representation in a socio-geo-political context. For example, what themes are highlighted in the text? Why? Ultimately, my teaching tool will 1. succor students’ ability to discuss feminist values including access to discourse, ethics of care, and critical thinking and 2. evaluate how we enact bell hooks’ feminist pedagogy to teach students about social transformation

    Review Study on Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in Engineering Education Through Digital Twins

    This study investigates the effect of digital twins in engineering education. This research was based on published research papers, conference papers, and case studies. Throughout a large range of studies, it was shown that digital twins can increase learning motivation and retainment through uses such as game-centered learning, personalized learning, and virtual prototyping. Particularly in engineering laboratory classes, digital twins can increase the variety of laboratory options while not increasing the cost due to equipment. This results in less barriers for students as there are more learning tools available at no additional cost or other requirements

    Exploring the Potential of Pavegen’s Kinetic Energy Generating Floor for Sustainable Energy Solutions: A Proposal for Cal Poly SLO

    This paper proposes the installation of Pavegen\u27s kinetic energy generating floors at Cal Poly’s campus as a sustainable energy solution. Pavegen has developed a pioneering technology that converts footsteps into clean and renewable energy. The versatility of these floors is demonstrated through successful implementations in various settings, such as transportation hubs and public spaces, generating power from foot traffic. Collaborations with Schneider Electric, installation at Dupont Circle, and integration at Heathrow Airport showcase the potential for sustainable urban infrastructure. This paper outlines research conducted on Pavegen and similar solutions, including communication with company representatives and examining proposed installation locations at the Cal Poly Recreation Center and Robert E. Kennedy Library. Factors such as foot traffic patterns, energy generation potential, cost estimates, installation duration, and project complexity are analyzed. By harnessing the power of human movement, Pavegen\u27s floors provide a renewable energy source, contributing to reduced carbon emissions and environmental impact. This paper explores the potential of these innovative solutions for creating a more sustainable world while enhancing software usage, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills
