Transitions Metal Health Association Youth Treatment Program Facility Upgrades
The Transitions Mental Health Association (TMHA) Youth Treatment Program in San Luis Obispo is a vital resource dedicated to supporting the mental health and well-being of young individuals in the community. TMHA recently purchased a new property that requires several updates before opening. Three California Polytechnic State University Construction Management students collaborated an estimate, schedule, design and construction of a parking lot, walking path, and a new tortoise enclosure. The team split up the roles evenly into two phases preconstruction and construction, where preconstruction includes estimate, schedule, design, and logistics. The purpose of this is to review phase one of the project which is to create an initial estimate of materials and equipment costs, sequencing and determining the project schedule, applying for funding, and a logistics plan. The construction includes a parking lot for their staff, a walking path from the barn to the house, and a new tortoise enclosure
Mending the Broken Bond: Exploring Human-Elephant Conflict in K. V. Dominic’s Poems
Mountains are the immovable totem of the landscape which stand out from the surrounding environment as they are the elevated portion of the earth’s crust. In mountain regions, wildlife is one of the essential factors to be considered for developing a holistic environment. As a result of the rapid dwindling of resources for wildlife, the ecological balance is affected. It deteriorates the relationship and instigates conflict between human beings and animals. Mountains are home to various species. Among various animals, elephants are the significant animals seen in the mountain region. K.V. Dominic’s poems depict humans’ cruelty and brutal treatment towards elephants. The investigation of human-elephant conflict is indispensable to protect the elephant species. This paper titled “Mending the Broken Bond: Exploring Human-Elephant Conflict in K. V. Dominic’s Poems” analyses the mode of relation between humans and elephants in the mountain region and identifies the factors that affect their relationship. Dominic’s poems reveal the negative impact of technology upon elephants and the humans’ superiority towards elephants. This paper analyses the factors that provokes the human-elephant conflict and suggests solutions to develop a kith and kin relationship between humans and elephants
Recognizing Exploitation and Rejecting Analogy: An Analysis of the Meat-Commodity
This paper is a two-part project. First, I reject the analogous relationship between the Holocaust and slaughterhouses (found in the anti-meat novel The Lives of Animals) and cross-species analogical thinking entirely; instead, I opt for modes of analysis that can examine the specific circumstances of animals within slaughterhouses. Secondly, I assert that a socio-economic Marxist analysis is the best prism in which to recognize the suffering of pre-slaughter animals and the causation of their suffering (the ostensibly necessary circulation and production of the meat-commodity)

Detecting Coherent Transport Structures in Ocean Surface Flows
Ocean surface transport plays a critical role in marine ecosystems, influencing the complex spatiotemporal patterns of both marine species and pollutants. The theory of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCSs) aims to identify fundamental patterns within time-dependent, nonlinear fluid flows. LCSs are material surfaces that act as dividing lines which fluid does not cross for a relevant period of time. LCS theory is still under active development, and there are multiple proposed ways to mathematically determine an LCS. Each proposed mathematical definition aims to capture the same physical properties, and some capture those properties more successfully and consistently than others. Here we examine two proposed definitions from the founder of the LCS field: finite time Lyapunov exponents (FTLEs) and geodesic detection. While geodesic detection was developed as an improvement on FTLEs, FTLEs remain the most popular method for using LCSs as an analytical tool. We apply both methods to a novel application. We analyze ocean surface current data in an area off the coast of central California slated for wind energy development, comparing their relative strengths and weaknesses both in theory and in practice
Refactoring Dependency Loading And Standardizing Factory Patterns In The Horizon Simulation Framework
The Horizon Simulation Framework (HSF) is an open-source community driven mod- eling and simulation tool developed over 15 years by a lineage of Cal Poly graduate students. The tool excels in its flexibility to model an assortment of complex systems, with prebuilt modeling elements available for the simulation of space missions. A high-level simulation tool like HSF lends itself to an agile development cycle as system constraints can be quickly identified through day in the life simulation of the modeled system. The objective of the work presented in this thesis is to refactor the way in which several modeling elements are loaded in the simulation framework. A focus is placed on improving how relationships between various modeling elements are initialized to allow the flow of information between distant assets that was previously not possible. Further improvements were made to the framework with the objective of standardizing how information is communicated from user input files to locations in the framework that depend on the inputs. After implementing these updates, a demonstration scenario was created to validate the developments implemented
NFPA Fluid Powered Vehicle Challenge 2023
This report includes the design process undergone by Team Shifty in designing a vehicle for the NFPA’s Fluid Powered Vehicle challenge. The report covers the background of the competition, research done by the team, engineering specifications for the design, preliminary and final designs, the manufacturing plan and process, project management details, and several recommendations for future teams participating in the challenge.
The National Fluid Power Association, NFPA, is a trade association with the goal of connecting fluid power companies and advancing fluid power. With the goal of advancement in mind, NFPA hosts an annual Fluid Powered Vehicle Challenge (FPVC). Since before the NFPA took over this challenge, Cal Poly has produced a team to compete.
Team Shifty completed research into past Cal Poly teams as well as other competing university teams to define the engineering specifications for the new vehicle and decide the design directions. The final design includes a new frame to address issues with the last teams frame, a new hydraulic circuit design and selection of new components to improve the circuits performance in the FPVC events and reduce losses, and the addition of gear shifting to the vehicle. With respect to hydraulics, a new manifold was sourced to accommodate the simplified fluid circuit, along with a larger motor to allow the vehicle to operate at higher torque. The prior team’s pneumatic system was completely replaced by a pneumatic front gear shifting system. The electronics implemented was the same system as the previous year, including an STM microcontroller, Nextion touch screen display, and Hydraforce valve operator with only two solenoid valves. Working together, these components allowed the rider to toggle between three unique drive modes, including: direct, regen, and sprint.
To produce a functional vehicle, research and planning was put into manufacturing and assembly processes as detailed in the manufacturing plan. The final product failed to perform as proposed in Team Shifty’s Scope of Work, as the vehicle’s rear chain consistently fell off during operation at the competition. This resulted in the vehicle not placing during a few of the challenges, including the Sprint and Endurance races. The cause of this failure was a function of the frame flexing under dynamic loading due to insufficient torsional stiffness, as well as the rear chain being too small to handle the large output torque of the upsized rear motor
Active Church Auditorium Redesign and Renovation
Active Church is a life-giving and dynamic church that exists to move people from where they are to where God wants them to be. This church for most of its lifespan has been located at the Fremont Theater as they did not have a building that they owned. However, in 2022 the church closed escrow on a building that was owned by another church located at 3172 Johnson Ave, San Luis Obispo, 93401. Before moving into the building major renovations needed to be done as this was a very old building from the 1960s. The initial design of the auditorium specifically was completed to be able to hold service there, except it was not the final goal for that space. While talking with the head pastor, Adam Magaña, an opportunity to help with the redesign and renovation of the auditorium was made available. The author worked with Active church to estimate, contract, design, coordinate, schedule, demolish, and construct a new Auditorium for Church. The completed project provides a better atmosphere to help Active Church best use the space to achieve their vision
