    Semiyolohikal na pagsusuri sa representasyon ng digmaan kontra-droga (drug war) ng rehimeng Duterte sa mga piling pelikula

    Ang pag-aaral na ito ay tungkol sa pagsusuri ng mga pelikulang tumalakay sa digmaan kontra-droga (drug war) na naganap sa panahon ng panunungkulan ni Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte mula 2016 hanggang 2020. Ang isyu ng extra-judicial killings (EJKs) ay naging sentro ng diskurso hindi lamang sa loob ng bansa kundi maging sa pandaigdigang larangan, lalo na sa mga internasyonal na human rights group. Ang marahas na kampanya kontra-droga ang nagdulot ng negatibong imahe sa Pilipinas at nagpatibay sa bansag na sick man of Asia. Sinuri sa pag-aaral na ito ang sampung pelikula (10) tungkol sa pagsugpo ng ilegal na droga. Ginamit ang semiyolohiya ni Roland Barthes bilang lente ng pagsusuri upang tukuyin ang mga icon (signifier), retorikal na estratehiya, diskurso (signified), at kabuuang mitolohiya (mythologies) ng digmaan kontra-droga. Natuklasan na sa 10 pelikulang sinuri, ang mga pelikulang Ma’Rosa, Alpha: The Right to Kill, Amo, Kamandag ng Droga, at Double Barrel (Sige! Iputok mo) ay naglahad ng pagsuporta sa kampanya ng dating pangulo. Natukoy ang pitong icon kaugnay rito. Ito ang 1) pagpapairal ng kaayusan; 2) pagdadala ng kapayapaan; 3) proteksiyon sa masa; 4) pagkakaloob ng hustisya; 5) pagbabagong panlipunan; 6) pagsugpo sa katiwalian; at 7) matapat na paglilingkod. Samantala, ang mga pelikulang Madilim ang Gabi, Neomanila, Buybust, at Watch List ay naglahad naman ng pagbatikos sa kampanya sa pamamagitan ng walong icon. Ito ang: 1) pagsasamantala sa mahirap/kahirapan; 2) pagsasamantala sa inosente/biktima; 3) pagpapalaganap ng takot; 4) pag-iral ng sistema ng gantimpala at parusa; 5) pagsasamantala sa kapangyarihan; 6) paglalaro sa buhay at kaligtasan; 7) paggamit sa digmaan bilang impluwensiya; at 8) pagtatanghal ng lakas ng estado. Sa pagsusuring ito, ginamit ang retorika ni Barthes upang matukoy kung paano binubuo ng pelikula ang diskursong ayon sa semiyolohiya ni Barthes. Ang mga pelikula ay may tendensiyang ipakita ang hegemonikong naratibo na pumapabor sa estado, habang ang ibang pelikula ay nagpakita ng alternatibong pananaw na humahamon sa nanaig na diskurso ng drug war. Lumitaw sa pag-aaral na ang pelikula ay maaaring maging kasangkapan hindi lamang sa pagpapalaganap ng ideolohiya kundi maging sa pagbuwag ng dominanteng naratibo sa pamamagitan ng alternatibong representasyon ng realidad

    Characterization and Residue Counts of Selected Soaps

    Surfactants in soaps and detergents significantly impact the environment, altering the physicochemical properties of soil and water, which may harm aquatic and terrestrial organisms. This study investigated the physicochemical characteristics of selected soaps and their residue count. A total of eleven (11) different soaps, including commercialized and homemade variants, were tested in triplicates. Parameters such as pH, conductivity, salt concentration, and temperature were measured to assess their effects on water quality. Results indicated that most soap samples were basic, with only three showing acidic characteristics. Conductivity levels varied significantly, with Soap J exhibiting the highest value. Salt concentration differences among soaps were also observed, with Soap J having the highest salt content. Temperature remained relatively stable throughout the experiment. Residue counts were measured through analytical balance to weigh the initial and residue of the soaps after 87 days diluted with sludge. It showed no significant difference both in physicochemical characteristics and residue counts of selected soaps with (p = 0.461) at 0.01 alpha level. Whereas, environmental factors such as pH, conductivity, and temperature had a significant impact (p = 0.0000, F = 25.178). This study highlights the impact of soap residues, as the higher the number of residues in soaps, the higher the impact on the environment. The result can be used as baseline data to predict or model the impact of the amount of soap used and status of waterways within the community using the residue counts and degradability principles

    Effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PBL) Approach in Teaching AP® Statistics among Grade 11 Senior High School students

    AP® Statistics is an introductory college-level statistics course that introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data (College Board, 2025). This US-based curriculum was introduced to Senior High School students A.Y. 2024-2025 of Jubilee Christian Academy replacing the subject Statistics and Probability. Alongside this implementation, Project-based learning (PBL) approach was used in classroom teaching and instruction to – (1) align with the competencies and skills set by AP® College Board; (2) let the students practice learning with the use of softwares and applications and (3) foster appreciation in the practical applications of Statistics. This allows students to apply critical thinking, problem-solving, and sustainable development which addresses the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (Quality Education). Fifty-nine (59) Grade 11 SHS students from 3 different sections chosen through volunteer response sampling participated in the study. A one group pretest- posttest experimental design was used to test if there was a significant difference between pretest scores and posttest scores of the participants. Results showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores of the participants (t=-11.1, p\u3c.001). This study strongly recommends continually using and testing the effectiveness of the PBL approach in teaching Statistics and to use control groups for future research to eliminate possible threats of bias and confounding variables

    STEM Integration in Robotics: Strengthening Problem-Solving Skills Through Challenge-Based Learning

    One core goal of integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and robotics is to solve problems. However, many schools struggle with STEM integration, and one recurring issue is the lack of strict instructional design in delivering STEM-integrated lessons. This mixed-methods quasi-experimental research design study explores how the STEM integration within Challenge-based Learning (CBL) enhances students’ problem-solving skills in robotics. Twenty senior high school students designed robotic solutions for community issues over 10 3-hour sessions. A thematic analysis reveals four key themes on how students perceived the instructional design enhances their problem-solving skills: applying STEM knowledge to real-world problemsolving, developing computational and analytical thinking, encouraging innovation and creative problem-solving, and strengthening problem-solving through hands-on CBL. Also, students encountered challenges, such as a lack of prior experience and knowledge in robotics, time constraints affecting learning and STEM integration, and the need for more hands-on learning and guidance. Presentation judging averaged 13.07/16, showing good performance but variability (sd=1.88). Students excelled in problem definition (x=3.40/4, sd=0.37) and organization (x=3.47, sd=0.43), competent in STEM integration (x=3.33, sd=0.85), yet struggled with technical solution explanations (x=2.93, sd=0.64). Problem-solving skills were evident, but variations in the solution scores suggest that some students need to strengthen their technical articulation and depth of understanding. Students suggested extending learning time, increasing access to resources and exposure to real-world applications, improving time management, and providing more hands-on guidance

    Orange (Citrus sinensis) Peels as Plant-Based Leather

    The pollution caused by the leather industry remains unchecked per year with factories sending out harmful emissions daily. To help combat this ongoing problem, this study was conducted by the students from the Science High School Curriculum of Saint Louis College, City of San Fernando, La Union - Junior High School in the School Years 2023-2025 in order to explore the potential of Orange (Citrus sinensis) Peels as Plant-Based Leather. Orange (Citrus sinensis) peels were utilized in this study due to its pectin which has the ability to form a gel-like structure by forming molecular chains through the formation of bonds with calcium ions. The researchers tested the plant-based leather’s effectiveness by determining the best formulation for durability, tensile strength, and abrasion resistance through their means and then comparing it with commercialized vegan leather through the use of t-test. The plant-based leather outdid the commercialized for abrasion resistance, performed on the same level for durability, but was less effective for tensile strength. The results signify that Orange (Citrus sinensis) peels as plant-based leather are a viable alternative to the current commercialized vegan leather typically made with plastic. Due to this, it was recommended that the plant-based leather be utilized in the fashion industry in the creation of items such as wallets, card holders, purses, and belt

    Levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among emerging adults in the Philippines: An exploratory spatial analysis

    Background Despite the enactment of the mental health law, mental illness in the Philippines is the third most prevalent form of morbidity; hence, screening is warranted, especially among Filipino emerging adults. This exploratory spatial analysis study aimed to identify spatial clusters of depression, anxiety, and stress among Filipino emerging adults. Methods A convenience sampling online self-administered survey was used to collect data from 18 to 29 Filipinos (n = 2729) in the Philippines. The Depression Anxiety Stress Scales–21 was utilized to ascertain the participant’s level of depression, anxiety, and stress. Coordinates were plotted with administrative boundaries and OpenStreetMap layer using the software ArcGIS, and clusters were evaluated using the Mapping Clusters—Hot Spot Analysis and Spatial Autocorrelation (Moran’s I). Results Results of mapping clusters regarding age group and sex showed that Pangasinan, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, Cavite, and the National Capital Region in Luzon Island are considered hotspots for severe and extreme levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. These conditions were most prevalent among early emerging adults and females. Conclusion Our study provided spatial locations of populations susceptible to mental health disorders, and these preliminary findings have implications for health policy and program expansion for mental health

    Effect of Cooking Methods on Lead (Pb) In Pasig River-Sourced Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

    Once declared biologically dead, the Pasig River now shows signs of aquatic life but remains heavily polluted with heavy metals like lead (Pb), which accumulate in fish and pose health risks. Despite this, many communities still rely on the river for food, particularly tilapia. This study addresses public health concerns by evaluating whether common cooking methods—frying, grilling, and steaming can reduce Pb levels in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) from the Pasig River to safe levels for consumption. A total of 107 tilapia samples were collected from Barangay Hulo, Mandaluyong City. The fish were cleaned, grouped, and cooked for 25 minutes using the three methods. Pb levels in raw and cooked fish were measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) and compared to the FDA’s safety limit of 0.3 parts per million (ppm). Raw tilapia had high Pb levels (mean: 2.49 ppm), exceeding the limit. Although cooking reduced Pb content, cooked samples of steaming (1.67 ppm), frying (1.77 ppm), and grilling (2.02 ppm) still exceeded the 0.3 ppm limit. These results show that tilapia from the Pasig River remains unsafe to eat even after cooking. This highlights the need for urgent environmental policies and stricter regulation of industrial waste disposal to reduce river pollution. Through regular water monitoring and spreading awareness, communities can be informed about the health risks of consuming contaminated fish. Future research should explore other cooking methods and investigate additional heavy metals to improve public health protection and food safety

    PROJECT CHLORSOROCO2: Utilizing Chlorella sorokiniana in Integrated Lab-scale Aquarium-Photobioreactor for Carbon Dioxide Biofiltration

    Climate change has been a global threat that impacts each country\u27s community, economy, and ecological processes, and the main powerhouse of such calamity is the greenhouse gas—carbon dioxide (CO2). In the Philippines, the increasing concentrations of CO2 due to climate change has raised concerns that affected human welfare and the environment, highlighting the need for innovation. The study aims to provide valuable insights regarding the integration of the microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana, a green freshwater microalgae known for its high photosynthetic rate and CO2 fixation efficiency, in an Aquarium-Photobioreactor (A-PBR) to contribute in opening CO2 sequestration for practicality and cost-effectiveness. Experimental results reveal a significant CO2 flow rate reduction, from 1.48 kg/cm² to 1.2 kg/cm² within four hours, due to Chlorella sorokiniana’s active photosynthetic activity. Simultaneously, a decline of pH level from 8 to 6 was also evident, signifying the absorption of CO2 within the water. Thus, turning the CO2 input into carbonic acid temporarily when it enters the medium, then dispersing into the medium as free CO2, typically occurring when CO2 is introduced at a rate exceeding the microalgae\u27s absorption capacity within small durations. Nevertheless, these findings highlight the promising role of Chlorella sorokiniana in addressing carbon emissions while maintaining feasibility for large-scale applications

    Problematic Social Media Short-Form Video Use and Academic Task Performance among Senior High School Students: The Mediating Role of Self-Control

    The prevalence of short-form videos in the current age has raised concerns about its potential impact on students’ mental and cognitive well-being. Short-form videos has been examined by researchers although the link between problematic short-form video (SFV) use and academic task performance and the mediating role of self-control has not been investigated. The present study aims to examine the relationships between problematic SFV use, self-control, and academic task performance among senior high school (SHS) students in the Metro Manila area and how self-control mediates this relationship. A total of 190 SHS students participated in this cross-sectional, simple mediation study. Data was collected through an online survey. Results indicate that problematic SFV use and academic task performance alone do not have any relationship (B = -0.055, p = 0.415). Although accounting for self-control, a 60.1% mediation was found (B = -0.162, p\u3c .001). Alongside a positive relationship between problematic SFV use and academic task performance, while holding self-control constant (B = 0.107, p = 0.026), indicates a suppression effect. Recommendations for future research are briefly discussed in this article

    Dapat Pakak: Analyzing the Intersecting Identities of Drag Queens That Influence Their Advocacy for LGBT+ Rights

    In the Philippines, drag has emerged as a compelling platform for performance and advocacy, particularly within the LGBT+ community. Beyond entertainment, drag offers space for self-expression and activism. In recent years, drag has entered the cultural mainstream, gaining visibility and influence; yet scholarly attention remains predominantly Western, overlooking the unique struggles of local performers. This study fills that gap by examining how drag queens in Metro Manila use their art to advocate for LGBT+ rights, focusing on their experiences, motivations, problems, and intersectionality of their identities. The researchers used a phenomenological qualitative approach, conducting in-depth, semi-structured interviews with six drag queens and used thematic analysis to analyze observations. The findings show that drag is an efficient means of self-expression, empowerment, and resistance. Drag allows drag queens to address issues of gender, discrimination, and personal experience. Honoring past injustices, battling internalized and social homophobia, and fostering inclusive communities are among the primary goals. Challenges include economic precarity, media-driven expectations, limited legal protections, and discrimination in personal and professional spaces. Findings indicate that the intersecting identities of drag queens are influenced by their nationality, gender, and sexuality, which they reflect during performances. They often showcase Filipino pop culture, commentaries on Philippine politics, and Filipino values in their drag. Moreover, the paper explored the challenges faced by the LGBT+ community and the advocacy for LGBT+ acceptance seen in their camaraderie and support. Collective findings emphasized the value of recognizing drag as a valid form of expression and advocacy
