The Effects of Chemistry Virtual Laboratories in Academic Achievement of Secondary Level Learners: A Meta-Analysis
Chemistry education is continuously improving to provide sufficient and appropriate learning for the students. The dynamic shaping of technology in the education sector induces the innovative strategies including the utilization of virtual laboratories in the learning process. This study revolves around the topic of examining the effectiveness of virtual laboratories in improving learner’s academic achievement in the secondary level Chemistry. To facilitate the meta-analysis, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol was used. Only 17 studies that met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. Using the Review Manager Version (RevMan) 5.4 software, the standardized mean difference in the form of standardized mean difference was used to measure the effect of virtual laboratory in enhancing learners’ achievement. The meta-analysis discovered the effect size of 0.98 which can be interpreted as positively large effect size of virtual laboratories in the academic achievement. Sub- groping was also utilized in this study due to the heterogeneous collected data which revealed the effect sizes according to the region, grade level, topic in Chemistry, and duration of implementation. With the aid of constructivist approach in teaching Chemistry lessons in virtual laboratories, positive effects were yielded. The education sector, educators, parents, and learners may consider to recognize the positive consequence of the utilization of virtual laboratories in improving the academic achievement in subjects including Chemistry
Development, validation, and implementation of a STEM teaching kit (STK) for junior high school out-of-field physics teachers
This study aimed to address the challenge of out-of-field teaching and enhance the integration of the STEM approach in physics education. With the implementation of the spiral curriculum in science, many out-of-field teachers were assigned to teach various branches of science, including physics, which posed significant instructional challenges. To support these teachers and improve STEM education quality, the researcher developed, validated, implemented, and evaluated a STEM Teaching Kit (STK) specifically designed for junior high school out-of-field physics teachers. The STK included STEM lesson plans (SLPs), STEM activities (SAs), scoring rubrics, self- and peer evaluation, and PowerPoint presentations promoting hands-on experiences despite limited resources to improve students’ understanding of physics concepts. The study followed a descriptive research design employing both quantitative and qualitative methods. Qualitative data were collected through a needs analysis survey to guide the development of the STK. Quantitative data were collected from students’ pretests and posttests, and perception tests were administered to both students and teachers. Additional qualitative insights from teacher and student surveys and interviews provided a deeper understanding of their experiences and challenges in using the STK.
The STK was piloted and implemented in two target schools across 12 sections, resulting in positive student performance outcomes based on the paired t-test results, which showed significant improvement from pretest to posttest. However, despite this statistical gain, the mean posttest scores remained relatively low, and the Hake gain results also indicated a low level of conceptual understanding. This discrepancy was attributed to multiple challenges during implementation, including the limited 45-minute class periods, frequent interruptions due to school activities, and variations in student learning capacity. In many instances, teachers could not fully cover the lessons within the available time, and some students required additional explanation and reinforcement to grasp the content thoroughly. Nevertheless, both students and teachers expressed positive perceptions of the STK, acknowledging its effectiveness in enhancing instructional delivery and student engagement. The findings demonstrated that the STK is a helpful tool for supporting out-of-field physics teachers and improving classroom interaction.
Since the STK was aligned with the MATATAG Curriculum and with the upcoming revisions under the Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum (EBEC), future researchers can use this kit to develop more adaptable and curriculum-responsive instructional materials. The STK’s structure, approach, and content may serve as a foundation for designing future resources that address teacher needs—especially out-of-field teachers—and learner diversity in science education. By refining and contextualizing the kit further, it can be made responsive to evolving curriculum standards while continuing to support effective STEM instruction across various school settings.

Mutual enrichment of the Kankanaey ritual practices of pamakan and daw-es in the context of ecological disaster and the Christian anointing of the sick and rites for the departed
The study applied dialogue as an approach to the meeting of gospel and culture. It staged a contrapuntal reading as a method of dialogue, juxtaposing Kankanaey healing practices with Christian healing beliefs. The Kankanaey healing and Christian healing, both found to be profoundly religious, seemed to have converged when the residents of Ucab, Itogon, Benguet, performed their pamakan and daw-es rites after the onslaught of Typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut). The typhoon occasioned a landslide that left dozens of small-scale miners lifeless beneath the earth and rubble. The decision of the elders and civil leaders to perform the rites began to unravel the religious worldview of the Catholic Kankanaeys. The pamakan is a ritual meal done on different occasions with the adikaila or unseen deities and spirits as necessary guests, and daw-es is a cleansing rite after burial, driving away the bad or angry spirit of the dead. These two rites served as components of the healing ritual for the survivors and the community after the disaster. These rites were performed to give respect to those who perished. The study looked into the possibility that these Christian indigenous peoples did a kind of anointing of the sick using these ritual practices. It sought to determine whether the healing ritual was compatible with or had the same function as the anointing of the sick. It was found that the elderly, manbunongs, ministers, and church workers accompanied the disaster-struck Kankanaey communities. The accompaniment incorporated indigenous and Christian concepts and practices of healing together. The pamakan and daw-es were employed as healing rites or anointing rites. The ministry included the healing of the environment and ecology. The pamakan and daw-es were further analyzed. The rite of anointing of the sick was analyzed, too. Both indigenous and Christian rites have strengths and limitations. Both have their unique elements, too. The uniqueness or factor of otherness of both rites is also a resource for checking and balancing what needs to be integrated or discarded. By way of contrapuntal reading, it is found out that to enrich further the Christian notion of healing among the Kankanaeys, the anointing of the sick has to take into account that pamakan induces harmony and communion, daw-es has a psychological value, the indigenous healing ritual connotes a communitarian spirituality of ecology, the rites include healing of ecology, there is a need of rites of reception for corpses during search and retrieval operations, and the community has a role in the healing process. In enriching further the Kankanaey healing belief, a punitive view of God from the indigenous consciousness must be dealt with through dialogue and catechism, a narrow notion of illness and suffering needs to be updated and broadened, and the absence of Jesus’ model of healing has to be corrected by incorporating Jesus’ style of healing. Considering all these factors in developing a healing rite for survivors and families after disasters among Catholic Kankanaeys is one way of enriching both the gospel and the indigenous culture
LOOPS: The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Musicians’ Promotional Strategies in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna
Music promotion is often overlooked by aspiring musicians despite its importance in building an audience and creating an identity. This is especially true for independent musicians, who must either consult with promoters or create promotional materials themselves. The COVID-19 pandemic affected many sectors of the music industry and has marked a greater shift in promotion methods, encouraging a more digital approach to promotion. The study aims to look into the methods that independent musicians in Sta. Rosa use to promote their music after the pandemic. This also includes exploring the effects of the pandemic on these methods and the differences between common promotion methods and those used by independent musicians in Sta. Rosa. Preliminary qualitative data has been compiled through research about different music promotion methods used globally and the way that these methods were affected by the pandemic. Interviews were then conducted to collect data regarding the promotion methods of independent musicians in Sta. Rosa. The data collected was analyzed in order to highlight issues and techniques that are specific to Sta. Rosa after the pandemic. A three-song EP with accompanying promotional materials such as visualizers will then be released, applying the principles and methods used by local musicians. The effectiveness of the promotional materials will be evaluated through surveys created with Google Forms. The study has found that Sta. Rosa has faced a lack of accessibility to digital platforms due to inexperience in the use of these platforms or insufficient materials to create promotional material. Despite this, local musicians have begun to focus on online promotion through platforms such as Instagram Reels and Tiktok as a result of the quarantine giving them time to explore the use of these platforms. Local musicians typically use materials such as live performance videos and visualizers with lyrics in short-form video posts to promote their music in addition to publication materials such as posters and album artwork. The original EP is set for release within the next 2 months, and the evaluation of the published materials will be conducted through surveys released to consumers after the release of the EP. The information gained from this study may be used by aspiring musicians as a guide to learning about different ways to promote their music and establish an identity as an artist. The data may also be used in future studies to further explore the way that the pandemic has affected musicians in developing locations
Banyuhay ng Makabayang Bakla: Ang Naratibo at Pagkakakilanlan ng mga Aktibistang LGBTQ+ sa Metro Manila
Ang salitang banyuhay, o “bagong anyo at buhay,” ay isang metapora na sumasalamin sa pag-usbong ng pagkakakilanlan ng mga aktibistang LGBTQ+, subalit bihira pa ring tinatalakay ang diskurso ukol dito. Nilayon ng pananaliksik na itong bigyang-pansin ang mga salik na nag-udyok sa mga aktibistang LGBTQ+ na sumali sa mga organisasyong pang-LGBTQ+ at ang papel nito sa paghubog ng kanilang pagkakakilanlan. Ginamit ang disenyong narrative case study upang masiyasat ang mga personal na naratibo mula sa pagladlad ng kanilang pagka-LGBTQ+ hanggang sa pagiging ganap na aktibista. Sumailalim sa semi-structured interview ang anim na kalahok na nanggaling sa iba\u27t ibang organisasyon mula sa Metro Manila. Sinuri ang datos gamit ang Modelo ng Pagsusuri ng Salaysay ni Labov (1972) upang matiyak ang pagkakasunod-sunod ng mga naratibo. Isinalaysay ng mga kalahok ang pagkamulat sa kanilang pagkakakilanlan bilang LGBTQ+ hanggang sa tuluyan nilang kinilala ang sarili bilang mga aktbista. Mula sa pagsusuring ito, lumitaw ang sumusunod na tema sa panloob at panlabas na salik na nag-udyok sa kanilang tuluyang paglahok sa aktibismo: (1) maagang pagkamulat at pagtuklas sa sarili, (2) personal na pagbubuo at pagninilay ng identidad, at (3) impluwensiya ng relasyon sa paligid. Batay sa Social Identity Theory–Self-Categorization Theory, lumabas na pinapahalagahan ng mga aktibista ang kolektibong identidad at pakikilahok. Higit sa lahat, hangarin ng pananaliksik na itong bigyan ng plataporma ang mga aktibistang LGBTQ+ upang buwagin ang mga maling kuro-kuro tungkol sa kanila, at patunayang malaki ang gampanin ng mga makabayang bakla sa pagbuo ng isang makulay at pantay na lipunan
Cytotoxicity of Glucosinolates Extracted from Green Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata)
Cancer is a large group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, which can invade any organ or tissue. According to WHO (2025), cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2020, or approximately one in six deaths. Despite significant advancements in cancer treatments over the years, such as radiation and chemotherapy, commonly used post-surgical complementary therapies can cause adverse side effects, including nerve damage, fatigue, and chronic pain. Glucosinolate (GSLs) is a naturally occurring compound found in cruciferous vegetables, such as green cabbage. GSLs produce metabolites exhibiting anticancer properties (Connolly et al., 2021); however, their cytotoxicity and effect on human cells require further investigation. This study investigates the cytotoxicity of glucosinolates extracted from green cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata). The cytotoxicity of the treatments, Pure Glucosinolate Extract (PGE), Glucosinolate with Water (GEW), and Glucosinolate Hydrolysate (GCH), was evaluated using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Assay (BSLA). The dose-response relationship and the lethal concentration 50 (LC50) toxicity level were determined using probit analysis across various concentrations (5, 10, 100, and 1000 μg/mL) of the glucosinolate-based treatments. The results demonstrated a concentration-dependent effect, with higher doses increasing mortality rates. Among the treatments, PGE exhibited the highest toxicity, followed by GEW, which demonstrated moderate toxicity, while GCH was classified as non-toxic. In particular, the Pure Glucosinolate Extract showed the highest cytotoxicity
Crude Extract from Robusta Coffee (Coffea canephora) Husks Using Ethanol: Steam versus Ultrasonic
The global demand for renewable energy sources necessitates exploring sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. Coffee husks, a significant agricultural waste product, represent a potential feedstock for biofuel production. This study investigated the comparative efficacy of steam distillation and Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction (UAE), using ethanol as a solvent to extract crude extract from Coffea canephora husks. A comparative experiment was conducted using 200g of Coffea canephora husks for each extraction method (n=3 per method). Yields were measured in mL. An independent sample t-test was used to compare the mean yields between the two methods. UAE yielded significantly more crude extract (mean = 303.33 mL, SD = 55.08 mL) than steam distillation (mean = 170 mL, SD = 26.46 mL) (t = -3.78, df = 4, p = 0.019). Ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) yielded significantly more crude extract from Coffea canephora husks than steam distillation, despite greater variability in UAE yields. However, further research is needed to characterize the extracted material and explore its potential applications. Future research should focus on the chemical characterization of the extract, comparison with other extraction methods, and investigation of possible applications in biofuel production or other industrial uses. Larger sample sizes are also recommended to enhance statistical power
Computer Vision-Based Busway Monitoring of Unauthorized Vehicles
This study presents an automated highway monitoring system designed to detect and quantify unauthorized vehicle violations during daylight conditions. The system identifies and classifies buses, cars, and motorcycles within CCTV footage using YOLO-based object detection. The insights generated offer significant value to local traffic enforcement agencies such as traffic management authorities, enabling data-driven decisions to enhance traffic management. By monitoring unauthorized vehicles on the highway, the system provides actionable information that supports more efficient and effective control of traffic flow. Future applications of this system include deployment on other road networks and the integration of additional violation detection features, contributing to broader traffic regulation and public safety efforts
Codependency: Understanding Student Collaborative Practices with ChatGPT in Academic Writing
The utilization of ChatGPT has transformed the educational landscape significantly by reshaping learning practices that include offering personalized academic assistance. While this has improved task efficiency, a concern regarding codependency has emerged, leading to students’ potential excessive reliance on the AI tool for academic tasks. This study investigates the nature and extent of codependent relationships between senior high school students (SHS) and ChatGPT. Specifically, it aims to determine the forms of collaboration present in student-AI interactions in academic writing tasks, analyze contributing factors to codependency, and explore how such interactions influence learning behaviors through participant surveys, log analysis, and a short, complementary interview. Results reveal a spectrum of student-AI collaboration, from task support to decision-making that highlights a wide range of healthy assistance to overreliance. These findings provide valuable insights for future designers of digital learning environments and educators when formulating learning activities that consider students and AI tools as collaborative partners
