    An allocation analysis of regional carbon emissions reduction responsibility of the Philippine power industry: An application of cooperative game theory

    Greenhouse gas emissions are a major contributor to global warming, with a significant portion originating from the Philippine power industry. One approach to mitigating this issue is through the implementation of carbon taxation and emissions trading schemes. A fundamental first step in designing such policies is the identification of an equitable allocation plan of Carbon Emissions Reduction Responsibility (CERR). This study clusters the 17 regions of the Philippines into four Super Regions (SRs) based on proximity and applies cooperative game theory—specifically, the Myerson value—to determine CERR allocation. Using 2022 data from the Department of Energy, the findings indicate that regions IV-A, IV-B, V, and NCR bear the highest CERR due to their high power consumption and limited clean renewable energy capacity. The Visayas and Mindanao regions on the other hand have negative shares of CERR due to the abundance of clean energy supply that exceeds power demand. Beyond allocation, CERR has potential applications in tracking the effectiveness of environmental policies on renewable energy adoption and in shaping a fairer carbon taxation framework. Future research can explore how CERR evolves over time and its role in incentivizing sustainable energy transitions

    Brain-based biology teacher toolkits (B3T2) and effects on knowledge acquisition

    This action research focused on the development of a Brain-Based Biology Teacher Toolkit (B3T2) to aid in the improvement of the teaching practice of biology teachers with the use of brain-based learning principles and to improve knowledge acquisition of senior high school STEM students in biology topics. This teacher toolkit is incorporated with the principles of brain-based learning demonstrated in the 7R’s of brain-friendly teaching as its lesson stages. Hence, the study assessed B3T2’s alignment with brain-based learning principles, its effect on students\u27 knowledge acquisition specifically their conceptual, procedural, and retention knowledge, and its effects on the teaching practice of biology teacher-study participants. A concurrent mixed-method research design was used to gather and analyze both quantitative and qualitative data in a joint display analysis. Results showed that B3T2 adhered to all brain-based learning principles (BBLP) demonstrated more on BBLP 2, 4, 9, and 11 in its development and implementation. The teacher toolkit implementation also significantly enhanced students\u27 conceptual knowledge, procedural knowledge, and retention of biology concepts on the first and second cycle implementation showing the positive effects of brain-based learning integration in a biology class. In addition, teacher-study participants also perceive that they have improved their classroom practice, lesson plan development, and instructional design while implementing the B3T2. Lastly, the study also highlighted the reflections of the researcher in each stage of the study showing positive improvements in his teaching practice associated with the development and implementation of the teacher toolkit. Future recommendations include adding more biology toolkits for the next iteration and proposing a teacher-training framework that will assist other biology teachers in the development and implementation of their own brain-based biology teacher toolkit.     Young’s non-ideal theory & Philippine agrarian justice: A critical approach to pursuing genuine agrarian justice

    Since the enactment of RA 6657 in 1988 which established CARP as a tool of social justice, today, peasants remain among one of the poorest sectors in society, where landlessness continues to be a reality for many. Using Iris Marion Young’s ideas on the distributive paradigm, this study sheds light on the current state of agrarian justice in the Philippines, by analyzing the philosophical foundation of CARP. With an aim to promote land and income equity, CARP’s main components are the redistribution of land, and distribution of support services. While socially progressive, philosophers such as Iris Marion Young, argue that a distributive approach to social justice has serious limitations. This poses an important question for the Philippine government’s understanding of agrarian justice, whose framework operates around a distributive justice framework. Applying Young’s criticisms to CARP, the paper argues that the Philippine government’s approach to agrarian justice is too narrowly distributive in its scope, failing to tackle the deeper systemic issues that maintain landlessness and poverty. In response, this paper recommends broadening the definition of agrarian justice beyond distribution through Iris Marion Young’s Five Faces of Oppression. As a critical and structural theory, it defines justice through the articulation of oppression– of which the philosopher categorizes into five: Exploitation, Marginalization, Powerlessness, Cultural Imperialism, and Violence. Overall, this paper concludes that while distributive justice measures e.g. CARP, are essential, genuine agrarian justice requires a structural perspective wherein it would: empower farmers to take full control of the agricultural supply chain; promote stronger land rights; recognize them as capable agents of welfare; acknowledge their expressive tools such as street protests in policy-making; privileging them in decisions over agricultural land through preventing agricultural land-use conversion; and in dismantling peasant violence through criminalizing red-tagging, and implementing protection programs. By applying Young’s theory on structural oppression, this study aims to broaden the understanding of agrarian justice, recognizing that true justice for peasants is not limited to redistribution, but in transforming the oppressive social structures that sustain inequality

    Tridiagonal pairs of Krawtchouk type arising from finite-dimensional irreducible ₄-modules

    Let denote an algebraically closed field with characteristic 0. One of the well-studied Lie algebras over is the special linear algebra 2 which has a Chevalley basis {e,h,f}. Since the special orthogonal algebra 4 is the Lie algebra over isomorphic to 2⨁2, 4 has a Chevalley basis {e1, h1, f1, e2, h2, f2}. In 2022, J. Morales found an automorphism *:4→4 using some parameters p1,p2∈ such that p1,p2∉{0,1}. By this automorphism, he found another Chevalley basis {e1*,h1*,f1*,e2*,h2*,f2*} of 4. He also described a simple construction of a finite-dimensional irreducible 4-module V in which 4 acts by derivation. In this paper, we construct four tridiagonal pairs on V via the actions of the Chevalley bases of 4. We show that these tridiagonal pairs are of Krawtchouk type and that the isomorphism of these tridiagonal pairs depends on the parameters p1 and p2. Consequently, we display four Lie algebra homomorphisms from the tetrahedron algebra ⊠ to 4 and via these homomorphisms, we describe how the generators of ⊠ act on V. Finally, we show that the irreducible 4-module V is isomorphic to a tensor product of two evaluation modules

    Effectiveness of a Contextualized Interactive Multimedia for Grade 8 Science Students

    The Computer-Assisted Instruction is undertaken widely to catch interest and to improve student’s performance. This Descriptive and Quasi- Experimental research was anchored in determining the effects of the developed and validated Contextualized Interactive Multimedia (CIMM) to the non-equivalent groups of grade 8 students of Tanglag National High School in their Science subject. To determine the level of interest of the population toward Science subject, the researcher utilized a 10-item survey-questionnaire called Test of Related Science Attitude (TORSA). Additionally, a researcher-made pretest and posttest questionnaires were administered to determine the academic performance of the respondents. Findings showed that there is an increase in the academic performance and interest toward Science of the experimental group who was exposed to the CIMMs. Moreover, significant differences do not exist between the results of the posttests of both groups. However, a significant difference can be noted between the controlled and experimental groups’ attitude toward Science subjects after the implementation of the intervention. This study aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, particularly in promoting inclusive, equitable, and high-quality learning experiences through the integration of technology-enhanced instruction. By fostering scientific interest and academic achievement, this research contributes to enhancing digital learning tools to support effective STEM education

    From Piano to Screen: Harnessing GarageBand to Reimagine and Arrange \u27Clair de Lune\u27 for Film Scores

    This study presents a learning plan for Grade 10 students that integrates impressionistic music, digital technology, and film composition. The project explores how students can reinterpret Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune using GarageBand to create background scores for selected movie scenes. The objective is to examine how modern technology can be used to reimagine impressionistic music in cinematic contexts, encouraging students to engage creatively with both music and film. Implemented over one school term, the methodology involves collaborative group work beginning with piano- based learning of Clair de Lune, followed by performance on iPads and advanced music arrangement using GarageBand. Students manipulate tempo, instrumentation, and sound layering to align the music with specific cinematic moods and narratives. Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, the project emphasizes creativity, innovation, and technical proficiency in digital music production. Expected outcomes include students gaining a deeper understanding of impressionistic music, developing stronger skills in music arrangement and digital production, and cultivating an appreciation for the role of music in film. This learning plan highlights the potential of integrating classical or impressionistic music education with modern technology to enhance the artistic expression and storytelling abilities of students

    Goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) manure as a fertilizing absorbent hydrogel for sustainable soil agriculture

    This study focuses on creating hydrogel from goat manure (Capra aegagrus hircus) as a sustainable solution to help farmers mitigate the effects of El Niño. Goat manure is a rich natural fertilizer containing essential nutrients such as organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, phosphorus pentoxide, and potassium oxide that support healthy crop & plant growth. The research aimed to create a fertilizing absorbent hydrogel using goat manure and assess its impact on plant height, number of fruits, and soil water-holding capacity. In this study, the researchers used an experimental research design aligned with descriptive quantitative approach, and the study was conducted at Saint Louis College, Carlatan, San Fernando City, La Union. The statistical tools used for analysis were mean and ANOVA. Different hydrogel formulations were tested, and the best-performing one was compared with a commercial hydrogel and a controlled formulation. Results showed that the amount of goat manure significantly influenced plant height and water retention capacity. Specifically, higher concentrations of goat manure resulted in greater yield and improved soil moisture absorption, although a moderate amount showed the most notable increase in plant height. There was a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, but no significant difference between the experimental and commercial hydrogel and controlled and commercialized treatments. These findings suggest that goat manure-based hydrogel can serve as an effective and eco-friendly alternative to commercial hydrogels. It was recommended that the farmers should utilize this product as an alternative to commercialized hydrogel for their crops

    Empowering Learners: The Impact of Student Performance Reports on Academic and Emotional Growth

    This study investigates the effects of student performance reports on students, focusing on their academic, emotional, and behavioral responses. These reports are designed to provide students and their parents with timely updates on academic progress and areas for improvement. This research explores how students perceive and respond to these evaluations, emphasizing both positive and negative outcomes, with the goal of fostering a supportive and effective learning environment. Findings from student surveys reveal that performance reports are generally effective in enhancing students\u27 understanding of their academic standing, fostering motivation, and encouraging self-reflection. Many students feel recognized for their hard work and report that the feedback helps them take responsibility for their learning. Additionally, the reports support parent-child communication regarding academic progress, strengthening collaboration between home and school to promote student success. However, some students experience stress and anxiety, particularly when they focus on grades rather than learning progress. A few students also expressed a desire for more personalized and detailed feedback to feel more supported by their teachers, highlighting the importance of balancing praise with constructive criticism. This study aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by examining ways to improve student engagement and motivation through effective feedback mechanisms. By refining performance report practices, schools can contribute to building inclusive, equitable, and quality education systems. It provides recommendations for designing student-centered performance reporting systems that promote encouragement, resilience, and a growth mindset while minimizing adverse effects. The findings aim to optimize the use of performance reports as tools for student empowerment, academic success, and personal growth
