    Characteristics and Frequency of Use of People Who Use Cannabis in Thailand: Results From a Web-Based Survey

    In the past two decades, the medical and recreational use of cannabis has been linked to an increase in cannabis- related harms, especially among frequent cannabis users. Amid the recent legalization of recreational use of cannabis in Thailand, this paper provides initial information regarding the frequency of usage, sociodemographic characteristics, reasons and patterns of cannabis use, as well as the characteristics associated with frequent usage among people who use cannabis. A cross-sectional anonymous online survey was conducted (July-August 2022) with 476 Thais who use cannabis recruited via the Line and Facebook apps. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analysis were conducted to describe and identify respondents’ characteristics associated with frequent use. Respondents were predominantly male, employed full-time, and had a mean age of 32.2 years. Sixteen and 0.8% of respondents consumed cannabis several times per week or daily. The most frequent reasons to continue using cannabis were to “help sleeping/relax” and “get high.” “Smoking blunts” was the most commonly reported method of use, followed by using a “bong,” eating cannabis edibles, and using vape pens or e-cigarettes to consume liquid cannabis concentrates. Significant characteristics associated with frequent use were being of a younger age, having grown cannabis, initiating cannabis use to “get high,” and “help sleeping/relax.” Frequent usage was more common among younger males, who have already grown cannabis and who are consuming cannabis for recreational purposes. Although the recent Thai legalization initially aimed for Thai citizens to consume cannabis for medical purposes, recreational usage was one of the predominant reasons for continuing to use cannabis. Our data suggest that emerging potent forms of cannabis are consumed in Thailand, calling for additional prevention efforts. The impact of personal cannabis cultivation on usage frequency remains understudied, warranting additional investigation.     (Ba)Ding, Ang Bato!: Queering Duterte\u27s Drug War in Jun Lana\u27s Big Night! (2021)

    Though there are studies around Duterte’s war on drugs and human rights violations, scholarship focusing on the relationship between Duterte’s politics and gender, particularly queerness and kabaklaan, is limited despite his frequent derogatory use of bakla, gay, or homosexual to demean rivals and critics. This article analyzes Jun Lana’s Big Night! (2021) through the Filipino concept of batak—intoxication, being forcibly dragged, and musculature—to examine the intersections of queerness, state violence, and survival in Rodrigo Duterte’s “War on Drugs.” Through close readings of key scenes, the article maps how batak operates as a framework for understanding the bakla’s shifting position: policed yet performing resistance, dragged into complicity yet not without critique, intoxicated not with drugs but with survival in a world addicted to power, spectacle, and control. The paper reveals how the bakla is not rehabilitated or redeemed according to state logics, but rendered legible as a complex political actor, crafting modes of endurance and critique within the very structures that aim to erase them. Pagbabakla ay pagbatak: Big Night! reminds us that to live queerly under state-sanctioned violence is not only possible but profoundly political.     Prevalence of toxocara spp. in canines and felines from CARA welfare Philippines in Mandaluyong, Metro Manila

    Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) infections infect both humans and animals through ingestion or skin penetration of respective infective stages. Canines and felines are also being infected with STH. Animal shelters are then characterized by overcrowding, communal living spaces, and inconsistent deworming practices that may increase the risk of STH transmission. This study addressed the limited local data on STH prevalence in sheltered canines and felines in Manila. It also identified detected species, and possible relevance between STH infection, animal weight, and deworming status. A total of 32 fecal samples (13 canines and 19 felines were collected from CARA. The Kato-Katz technique was used for microscopic examination of fecal samples to detect STH eggs. Data on each animal’s weight and deworming status were gathered from CARA’s records. Given the small sample size, descriptive analysis was applied suggesting a low STH prevalence, with only one feline (C15) testing positive for Toxocara spp., corresponding to an overall infection rate of 3.125%. Feline (C15), weighing 3.25 kg and 623 days post-deworming, showed that even healthy animals within the average weight remain susceptible to reinfection without regular monitoring and proper care.     Given the significant environmental risks that improper solid waste disposal poses, the importance of mitigating facilities, such as sanitary landfills, is a critical component for maintaining good environmental quality. The study assessed the environmental quality across five selected sites within the Metro Clark Sanitary Landfill located in Capas, Tarlac, Philippines, focusing on soil, water, and air quality. In situ analysis included pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), and electrical conductivity (EC) for water assessment, along with formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), carbon dioxide (CO2), temperature, and humidity for air assessment. Heavy metal concentrations in soil and water were determined via Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Results revealed that while heavy metal concentrations in soil remained below regulatory limits, water samples in all sampling sites contained elevated levels of Pb, Cd, and Cr, exceeding Philippine water quality standards. In situ parameters remain within acceptable limits, indicating minimal alteration of bulk water properties. Comparisons considering relative locations showed that the raw leachate site exhibited highest EC, TDS, and temperature indicating a pollution hotspot. Water collected from downstream showed elevated levels of EC and TDS suggesting possible migration or contamination. Air qualiy analysis confirmed that pollutant levels were within safety limits. The analysis revealed that while air and soil samples were mostly compliant, water samples consistently exceeded regulatory thresholds for heavy metals, signifying potential contamination due to leachate migration, emphasizing the importance of continuous environmental monitoring. The researchers recommend future studies to explore other relevant quality standards for soil, water, and air quality assessment and conduct similar research on other landfill sites to provide a better understanding of long-term environmental and public health risks.
