PINENERGY: A Sustainable Bio-Piezoelectric Generator from Queen Pineapple Crown Leaves (Ananas comosus [Linn.] Merr.) for Energy Generation, Harvesting, and Conversion
Energy is one of the necessities in life. The Philippines has abundant energy resources; however, as the energy demand increases, energy reserves are diminishing faster than they can be replenished, and alternatives remain underutilized due to cost and ethical challenges, resulting in a shortage in energy production. To combat this, bio-piezoelectricity, which transforms mechanical forces into electrical energy through an organic material, offers a secure substitute for current energy resources. This study aims to determine the efficacy of queen pineapple crown leaves (QPCL) as a bio-piezoelectric generator in energy generation, harvesting, and conversion efficiency. The leaves served as the primary material of the three (3) fabricated QPCL-BPEG, designed to absorb applied force and convert mechanical energy to electrical energy, measured in voltage. Each QPCL-BPEG is subjected to varying weights, ranging from 0 g to 100 g, until maximum voltage is reached. Subsequently, the measured voltage output of the QPCL will be compared to the voltage output of biologically-based, specifically those of plant waste fabricated piezoelectric generators. The results revealed a maximum voltage output of 1.57 V using a 1 kg mass on the QPCL-BPEG, and a minimum output of 62 mV produced without any weight force. Thus, these results suggest that QPCLs may be a viable energy source through a bio-piezoelectric fabrication process for energy generation, harvesting, and conversion efficiency despite the lower output compared to other biological-based BPEGs

Evaluation of Elementary School Students’ Awareness of Road Safety Signage in Calamba City, Laguna
Abstract: Road traffic injuries are one of the alarming yet neglected public health issues in the Philippines. Traffic control signs are often installed in conspicuous locations, but their effectiveness can be assessed by how the public understands them. This study investigated the road signage knowledge of Grade 6 students in a public elementary school in Calamba City, Laguna. Data were gathered through a researcher-made 14-item survey and individual semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that the students are generally knowledgeable about common road signage, except for school-related road signs. Inclusion of road safety signs lessons in the classroom was limited, and teachers generally showed a lack of mastery of the topic. Based on these findings, this study proposes conducting road safety orientations for students and teachers, disseminating road safety infographics in the area to increase awareness, and improving the visibility of the existing school zone signage. To achieve these goals, the school may consider strengthening its partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) and other stakeholders. Furthermore, cooperation with barangay officials is recommended to assist students, especially during morning arrivals and dismissal times. Finally, gamifying lessons on road safety can be explored as a teaching strategy, as indicated in the students’ responses
Understanding Academic Procrastination: A Study on What Causes Students to Procrastinate and Its Relationship with Academic Work of Varying Perceived Difficulty Levels
Procrastination is the tendency to delay starting or finishing tasks, with perceived task difficulty being one of the common causes. This study examines how students’ perceptions of task difficulty influence their tendency to procrastinate on three academic tasks: essay writing, group projects, and studying. Additionally, the study aims to identify the most procrastinated activities and analyze correlations. Through a survey, data was collected from N = 65 randomly sampled senior high school students at De La Salle University Manila, specifically from the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strands. Participants answered two modified scales across the three tasks with the Academic Performance Scale (APS) to assess procrastination and the Perceived Task Difficulty Scale (PTDS) to measure perceived task difficulty. Results indicate that students procrastinate the most on studying and find it the most difficult. Essay writing also showed a strong link between difficulty and procrastination, while group projects were the least affected. Statistical analysis revealed moderate positive correlations between perceived task difficulty and procrastination, with essay writing showing the strongest connection. Regression analysis further confirmed that as the perceived difficulty increases, so does the likelihood of procrastination. As expected, this relationship was strongest for individual tasks, especially essay writing, as students often feel overwhelmed when working independently. These findings highlight the role of task difficulty in procrastination and suggest how educators can support students in improving task completion and academic performance. Future research could explore how additional variables interact with task difficulty to influence procrastination
Beyond the Binary: Queer Media Engagement\u27s Role In Shaping Filipino LGB Youth Identity Formation
This study examined the associations between queer media engagement, demographic factors, and social identity formation among Filipino lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) undergraduate students (N = 52, aged 18-24) using correlational analysis. Spearman\u27s rank correlation coefficient (ρ) revealed a significant positive association between monthly family income and queer media engagement (ρ= 0.28, p \u3c .05), suggesting socioeconomic factors influence access to identity-affirming media resources. Weekly hours of media consumption demonstrated the strongest relationship with overall engagement level (ρ = 0.43, p \u3c .01), validating the multidimensional nature of queer media engagement. Contrary to prevalent assumptions, findings showed a non-significant negative correlation between queer media engagement and identity formation (ρ = -0.16, p \u3e.05), suggesting a more complex relationship than previously theorized. Analysis of identity formation components revealed stronger development in cognitive aspects (median = 4.0) than behavioral components (median = 2.0-2.5), aligning with established models of LGBTQIA+ identity development where internal affirmation typically precedes external expression. These findings challenge simplistic assumptions about media influence and suggest a nuanced dynamic where socioeconomic factors, developmental stages, and cultural context significantly shape how Filipino LGB youth engage with queer media and integrate these experiences into their identity formation processes. This underscores the importance of addressing potential digital access disparities and developing critical media literacy alongside increased representation
“Vadeng, ang bato, Darna!:” The Queering Strategies and Resulting Queer Representation in Sapphic TikTok Fan Edits of Darna (2022)
The Filipino teleserye, known for its social realism, offers insights into the world of its audiences. However, LGBTQI+ representation, including queer women, largely stay confined to secondary characters and stereotypes in heteronormative mainstream media. The production of fan fiction, particularly slash fiction, counters this lack of authentic representation by allowing queer reinterpretations of heteronormative narratives. However, there is a notable gap in how such reinterpretations manifest not simply through textual but also short-form audiovisual storytelling, enabled by digital advancements. Hence, this inquiry analyzed 50 sapphic TikTok fan edits, based on similar research by McGorry, of the teleserye Darna (2022), selected using purposive sampling. This study examined how the fans of protagonists Narda Custodio (Darna) and Regina Vanguardia (Valentina), called Vadengs, reconstructed the canonically platonic friendship to portray queer women relationships. Qualitative content analysis, specifically deductive category application derived from Jenkins’ approaches of reconstruction, Goldmann’s generic traits of slash, and Perea’s markers of queer identity, identified five themes, revealing fans queer heteronormative narratives through the (1) intensifying of emotions and (2) shifting of context, and fans depict queer women relationships as (3) traditionally conforming, (4) physically affectionate, and (5) emotionally expressive. The findings reflect a pattern of fan creators dedicating significant attention to depicting nuances of queer women relationships, which are often reduced to fleeting moments in heteronormative media, making sapphic fan edits not just community-driven platforms to reclaim representation but also windows into queer experiences, which informs authentic mainstream representations and further research on storytelling methods in other digital platforms
Beyond Sunday: The Lived Experience of Gen Z Practicing Christians in The 21st Century
This study investigates the lived experiences of Generation Z practicing Christians in the 21st century, examining how they sustain their faith amid secularization, technological advancements, and shifting societal norms. Employing a phenomenological approach, in-depth semi-structured interviews with 5 Gen Z Practicing Christians revealed key themes: (1) their faith is characterized by a dynamic, personal relationship with God, nurtured through daily practices rather than rigid rituals; (2) they actively negotiate tensions between biblical values and secular culture, often prioritizing divine principles over societal expectations; (3) familial teachings and faith-based communities play foundational roles in shaping their spiritual identity; (4) personal struggles, including mental health crises and everyday temptations, serve as catalysts for resilience and spiritual growth; and (5) digital platforms are strategically utilized to access religious content, though participants exercise discernment to avoid conflicting ideologies. The findings highlight the adaptability of Gen Z Christians, who blend traditional beliefs with modern contexts while maintaining religious commitment. This research bridges gaps in understanding contemporary youth religiosity, offering insights for religious communities, educators, and policymakers to support faith resilience in an increasingly secular society
Self-Reflexive Vs. Engaged Senior High School Students of Adamson University: Levels of Social Consciousness and the Intensity of Relational Aggression Towards Brand Boycotting
Brand boycotting is a form of non-violent protest that refers to people refraining from buying a product from a brand that does not align with their morals and values. There is still a significant gap in the level of social consciousness and the intensity of relational aggression of Senior High School Students in Adamson University and its correlation, to which this study aims. The study used a correlational design to assess the relationship between the two variables without manipulating it, wherein the results indicated that the respondents have a low self-reflexivity and are moderately disengaged. However, the respondents slightly lean towards self-reflexivity since it has a higher median than engaged. This suggests their understanding remains largely introspective, highlighting a reflective process rather than active engagement. Additionally, their intensity of relational aggression is moderately low, which suggests there is only a low tendency of exclusion of brands and encouragement among them. The results of this study revealed a higher correlation of engagement and intensity of relational aggression than self-reflexivity, confirming that students who have transitioned from introspection into active participation are significantly more likely to engage in brand exclusion. Both levels of social consciousness established a statistically significant and positive relationship with the intensity of relational aggression; hence, the researchers rejected the null hypothesis
Evaluating Mangrove Extent Mapping from Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 Using the Minimum Distance Classifier Algorithm
Mangrove cover in the Philippines decreased by more than 50% by 2000, from an estimated 400,000 to 500,000 hectares in the 1920s. Mangroves play an important role in preserving species biodiversity, allowing carbon sequestration and coastal resilience. Monitoring the condition of mangrove forests is essential because of the serious threat posed by deforestation for road building and aquaculture conversion. By offering a cost-effective and efficient way to map vast areas, satellite imagery has transformed ecological research and made it possible to identify and monitor mangrove forests both locally and globally. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery in classifying and mapping mangrove cover through the means of validating the accuracy by conducting supervised and unsupervised classification algorithms. The study used both unsupervised classification through clustering and supervised classification with the minimum distance classifier through the Semi-Automatic Classification Plugin in the Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS) software. The results show that clustering output for unsupervised classification received a total of 44% total accuracy for Sentinel-2 and 38% total accuracy for Landsat 8. In the case of supervised classification using the minimum distance classifier, Sentinel-2 has a 74% total accuracy, while Landsat 8 resulted in a total accuracy of 70%. The study concludes that supervised classification performed better compared to unsupervised classification based on the accuracy assessment using a confusion matrix. This study contributes insights into the application of open-access satellite imagery to mapping mangroves
