Exploring the Role of Workplace Flexibility and Trust in Reducing Employee Turnover Intentions: The Moderating Influence of Reciprocation Wariness in Hybrid Work Environments
Employee turnover remains a significant challenge in hybrid work environments, where workplace flexibility is often seen as a retention strategy. This study examines the relationship between flexible workplace arrangements (flexplace) and turnover intentions, with felt trust as a mediator and reciprocation wariness as a moderator. Using Social Exchange Theory and the Norm of Reciprocity, this research explores how workplace flexibility fosters trust and reduces turnover intentions while accounting for employees’ skepticism toward reciprocation. A cross-sectional survey of 382 employees from the Philippine Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry revealed that flexplace is significantly associated with lower turnover intentions. Mediation analysis indicated that felt trust partially explains this relationship, though its effect was marginally significant. The moderated mediation analysis showed that reciprocation wariness significantly moderates the mediation pathway; however, its conditional indirect effects across levels were only marginally significant. These findings highlight the need for organizations to pair workplace flexibility with trust-building initiatives to maximize its impact. Future research should explore additional mediating factors and assess long-term effects in hybrid work settings
Experiences of self-forgiveness and perceived effects on mental health among Filipino elderly
Elderly Filipinos face aging-related challenges that put them at risk of mental illnesses such as depression (The Department of Health, 2012 as cited in Carandang et al., 2019b), anxiety, and PTSD (Knight & Sayegh, 2011). The current research suggests that self-forgiveness can protect this demographic from mental illness. It argued that self-forgiveness can help Filipino seniors adopt a more realistic and compassionate stance towards themselves at life’s end. It allows them to focus on what the good they had done while accepting what they had done wrong and encouraging them to strive to become better people in old age. All of this encourages a more positive attitude towards aging as a whole. To provide evidence for this, the current research examined the kinds of situations in which Filipino seniors practice self-forgiveness, the process they underwent to achieve self-forgiveness, and their perceived effects of self-forgiveness on their mental health. A qualitative research design was employed. Data was gathered from 11 community-dwelling seniors aged 60 to 75, residing within Metro Manila, and who garnered high scores in the Dual-Process Self-Forgiveness scale (Griffin et al., 2018). A qualitative thematic analysis was used to interpret data and to arrive at themes. A total of 11 themes were created: When causing tension within the family,” “After inflicting harm on oneself and others,” “While taking ownership of actions and restoring values” (situations); “Developing a balanced view of negative and positive life events,” “Practicing healthy coping mechanisms,” “Strengthening ties with family and community” (processes); “Commitment to living a life of purpose and intention,” Increased awareness of weaknesses and use of one’s strengths,” and “Inner peace and social harmony” (perceived effects). The current study also discusses self-forgiveness through the lens of collectivist values and concludes with suggestions for further research as well as recommendations for psychologists in clinical settings

Disasters and devotion in the urban genesis of a colonial town: A local history of Zamboanga, 1635-1899
This study attempted to write a narrative of the historical process engendering the formation of the bayan, or town, around the occurrence of disasters (natural and human-induced) and devotion to a Marian religious image. It examined individual disasters as well as the combined and cumulative effects of multiple disasters and how they influenced the course of regional or local history. Alongside assessing the immediate, intermediate, and long-term ramifications of catastrophic events, the ensuing narrative weaves a local history accounting for both the destructive and transformative legacies of disasters on society and communities over time.
The study of the history of disasters in Zamboanga offers an opportunity to examine its transformational force and legacies in the genesis of a town and ethnicity. There is an indissoluble link between disasters as drivers of the historical processes and the formation of colonial towns or etnikong bayan, as shown in the case of Zamboanga. The establishment of Zamboanga as a presidio or a fortified town, and the subsequent founding of more towns coincided with a period marked by frequent and intense geophysical and biological hazards and shocks in the latter half of the nineteenth century. As the capital, Zamboanga was situated at the crossroads of significant traffic associated with deportation, slave-holding activities, trade, migration, and modern developments. Across the historical continuum, Zamboanga hosted people from disparate geographic, social, and cultural backgrounds to become one of the nineteenth century’s most urbanized centers with a highly variable profile yet common traits. The core population of the Spanish-held settlement in Bagumbayan (the alternate name of Zamboanga), in general, consisted of aggregately displaced groups of people induced by disasters over time.
Notwithstanding the destruction, displacement, and disruption associated with disasters, the resulting convergence and innovations galvanized the formation of the towns and the development of an ethnicity in Zamboanga. A key was the devotion to La Virgen del Pilar, which served as a constructive force for various social groups to exercise authority and power, helping to establish a certain social and cultural order. To the natives, devotion and solidarity in times of disasters were organic practices deeply entrenched in preexisting ecological knowledge systems and customs intimately connected with nature and its elements. These actions are crucial elements in shaping the town\u27s formation and nurturing its ethnic identity around long-held values that promoted social cohesion among the population at the crucible of disasters.
One of the interesting aspects of the combined effects of these multiple disasters in Zamboanga is that they facilitated an adaptive tool for language development (later identified as Chabacano) to reduce alienation and create a network of social relationships, which ultimately influenced the shaping of the Zamboangueño ethnic identity. The collective memory conditioned by a devotion to a Marian cult, La Virgen del Pilar, and the Chabacano (a language generally associated with the common people) became enduring cultural by-products created in response to conditions generated by disasters
Global environmental politics: The oscillation of United States on multilateral agreements
This research examines the oscillating stance of the United States toward global environmental agreements, specifically the Montreal Protocol, Kyoto Protocol, and Paris Agreement, through the frameworks of the logic of consequences and the logic of appropriateness. These frameworks provide insight on how the United States navigates foreign environmental policy. The analysis reveals that the participation or withdrawal of the United States from environmental agreements reflects their calculated decisions based on expected benefits from pursuing an action and alignment with its identity as guided by normative obligations. In the Montreal Protocol and the Paris Agreement under the Obama administration, the United States demonstrated leadership driven by perceived environmental risks, economic viability, and international expectations. Conversely, its rejection of the Kyoto Protocol and withdrawal from the Paris Agreement under the Trump administration were grounded in concerns over economic losses, equity in international obligations, and its identity emphasizing sovereignty and economic prioritization. The study concludes that the variations in the engagement of the United States with these agreements show that they support global environmental efforts when they align with its interests and identity, and withdraw when they do not.

War and (post)human nature: A critical posthumanist approach in obsoleting wars
I will examine whether or not we can eradicate wars within this post-human world. Wars are generally understood as a state of organized and open-ended conflicts that are done through various means and different ends. Present-day theories in the philosophy of war are depicted as being deeply rooted in scientific-anthropocentric notions of “human nature”. This phenomenon is understood to be deeply embedded in the biological (or inherent) capacity of humans to commit acts of violence. This paper will examine why this deterministic and anthropocentric theorizing of wars is detrimental in theorizing for obsolescence. Posthumanism teaches us that our notions regarding “human nature” are critical in our analysis of human actions, specifically on why we do them. It is a worldview where the value of human life is decentralized and put on the same level as other life forms. To be a posthuman, therefore, is to be equally as valuable as any other form of life within the world, and to co-evolve with them in the process. I will attempt to explain why a posthuman war-free world is still feasible. As such, I claim that wars can be made obsolete through posthumanism because human beings are no longer the center of life, and have moved past attaching the phenomenon to a ‘nature’
