Optimization of microstrip and planar inverted-f antennas using rough set theory
Antennas play an important role in wireless devices, with microstrip antenna (MSA) and planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) emerging as a prevalent class of patch antennas. Its conformable configurations have contributed to their widespread adoption, and its effectiveness is contingent upon the proper design of antenna properties. Innovative designs for MSA and PIFA exhibit limited optimization potential in terms of the antenna’s form factor and operating bandwidth. Working against this gap, this research presents a novel machine learning-based pseudocode algorithm for optimizing orthogonal antennas. It purposely seeks to improve antenna gain and radiation efficiency as a contribution to innovative communication systems. Results showed that after fuzzifying antenna gain and parameters, the total weighted entropy of MSA is 3.5235% with a -23.0293 dB S11 magnitude at 2.8 GHz frequency. Microstrip design results also yielded a significant reduction in rules of 97.49%, highlighting the substantial impact of the processing technique and the utilization of constraints. The empirical testing of the developed rules yielded a 100% validity rate, denoting the accuracy of rules in data classification. The innovative novel pseudocode algorithm is structured into sections to enhance clarity and readability, detailing a framework for optimizing MSA, PIFA, and probably other antenna design types.Index Terms: microstrip antenna, planar inverted-F antenna, fuzzy rough set theory, antenna design algorithm, optimization, innovative communication system
Haunted by the global: Eliza Victoria\u27s four speculative novels and the archipelagic body
The study examines how transnational flows disrupt and contaminate national and local borders, generating anxieties due to the instability that accompanies change. This phenomenon prompts a new gothic framework that decenters Western narratives and interpretations: globalgothic. The study utilizes globalgothic developed by Glennis Byron, Fred Botting, and Justin D. Edwards as its main framework, along with gothic as a critical lens to understand socio-historical anxieties. It close reads Eliza Victoria’s four novels—Project 17 (2013), After Lambana: Myth and Magic in Manila (2022, Mervin Malonzo, illustrator), Wounded Little Gods (2022), and Dwellers (2022)—and operationalizes globalgothic’s core attributes, such as hauntedness, vilification of globalization’s processes, and exploitation of what globalization enables and generates. It also draws on personal and national hauntedness, as well as links with foreign narratives and characters, to develop a broader perspective on how power structures regulate and commodify the body.
The close reading reveals that Victoria’s fiction is a literature of the body as a locus of power, control, and resistance. The misshapen perceptions of the consequences caused by the collapse of old and familiar structures and boundaries manifest through the characters’ hauntedness, emerging as a symbolic condition. The study also explores and expands on the family as an overarching motif and themes of deterritorialization, disease, and atonement. Beyond close reading, the study contributes to discourses on globalgothic and Philippine gothic through its incorporation of Genevieve L. Asenjo’s archipelagothic perspective through the Visayan hacienda stories, as a method for reimagining the spectral and enduring tropes in contemporary Philippine fiction.

Lie polynomial characterization in a q-deformed universal enveloping algebra of a low-dimensional Lie algebra
Let k be a field, and fix q, r, s in k. Let Uq(r, s) denote the associative algebra generated by two elements A, B that satisfy the relation AB-qBA=rA+sB. We give Uq(r, s) a presentation in three generators by introducing C=[A,B]:=AB-BA. We employ Bergman\u27s Diamond Lemma to construct a basis for the algebra Uq(r, s), which simultaneously serves as a basis for the two generalized q-deformed universal enveloping algebras of two-dimensional Lie algebras generated by A and B, defined respectively by the relations AB-qBA=rA and AB-qBA=sB. Furthermore, we determine a solution to the Lie polynomial characterization problem in the corresponding class of q-deformed universal enveloping algebras
Basic Effectiveness of Group Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (GMBCT) in the University Setting
The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped daily life and amplified mental health challenges worldwide, with university students identified as a particularly vulnerable group. To address this need, the present study evaluated the effectiveness of group mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (GMBCT) as an evidence-based intervention for students receiving psychosocial services during the pandemic. Using a pretest–posttest design, data from 34 students randomly assigned to either GMBCT or individual treatment-as-usual (TAU) provided by a university-based clinic were analyzed. To evaluate treatment effects, an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was conducted to compare post-treatment outcomes between the two groups while controlling for pre-treatment scores, treatment length, concurrent therapy, diagnosis, and medication management. Results indicated that both interventions led to improvements in depression, anxiety, and overall well-being, but students in the GMBCT group achieved significantly greater reductions in anxiety symptoms. Moderation analyses further demonstrated that the benefits of GMBCT in reducing anxiety and enhancing well-being were amplified among students with higher levels of self-compassion, self-efficacy, and emotion regulation. Conducted entirely online due to pandemic restrictions, the study provides preliminary evidence on the feasibility and effectiveness of delivering GMBCT via telepsychotherapy. These findings suggest that GMBCT may be a cost-effective and scalable intervention for university-based mental health services, with potential to expand access and address the growing mental health needs of students in both crisis contexts and routine care
Discursive and Ideological Issues Foregrounding the Attitudinal Conceptualization of Yahoo Yahoo (Internet Fraud) in Selected Nigerian Comedy Skits
Cybercrime, Yahoo Yahoo in the Nigerian context, has emerged as one of the major issues the global space is currently facing, and as such has received scholarly attention, mostly from the sociological, anthropological, and legal perspectives, but very scant attention from linguistics. From alinguistic perspective, this study thus investigates the discursive-ideological issues foregrounding Nigerians’ attitudinal orientation towards Yahoo Yahoo (Internet Fraud) as portrayed in selected Nigerian comedy skits. Data comprised four purposively selected comedy skits by Lasisi Elenu and Prince Tgb downloaded from their social media pages (YouTube and TikTok). With analytical insight from van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model of ideology, findings of the ideological issues foregrounding the attitudinal conceptualization of Yahoo Yahoo in the skits are: response to parental pressure, avenging the “evil” of colonization and exploitation of Africa and Africans, the construction of Yahoo Yahoo as a legitimate mentorship system, and an enterprise requiring spiritualism/fetishism for economic breakthrough. This reveals the institutionalized dimension cybercrime (Yahoo Yahoo) has assumed in Nigeria. Keywords: Cybercrime, ideology, Nigerian comedy skits, Dijk’s socio-cognitive model
“Vadeng, ang bato, Darna!:” The Queering Strategies and Resulting Queer Representation in Sapphic TikTok Fan Edits of Darna (2022)
The Filipino teleserye, known for its social realism, offers insights into its viewers’ lives but often presents limited and stereotyped portrayals of LGBTQI+ individuals, including queer women, due to heteronormativity. Fanfiction, specifically slash fiction, resists this by reimagining heteronormative narratives from a queer angle. Despite digital media advancements, Philippine research has yet to analyze fan-led queer representation on digital storytelling platforms, such as TikTok. Hence, following similar research by McGorry (2022), this study purposively sampled fifty sapphic TikTok fan edits of the teleserye Darna (2022) to examine how Vadengs, fans of protagonists Narda Custodio (Darna) and Regina Vanguardia (Valentina), reimagined and reconstructed their canon platonic friendship as a queer relationship. Using a deductive-first qualitative content analysis, informed by Jenkins’ (1992) Approaches of Textual Reconstruction, Perea’s (2018) Markers of Queer Identity, and Goldmann’s (2022) Generic Traits of Slash, this study identifies five themes showing fan creators queer heteronormative narratives through intensified emotions and contextual shifts, while representing sapphic relationships as traditionally conforming, physically affectionate, and emotionally expressive. The findings support that sapphic TikTok fan edits are a form of not only digital but sociocultural storytelling that allows a deeper understanding of queer women experiences, challenges heteronormative mainstream media, and ultimately reclaims marginalized queer women representation. This study contributes to media scholarship and empowers fan communities, LGBTQI+ identities, and media producers by promoting critical media consumption and, more importantly, informing authentic and stereotype-free sapphic narratives in Philippine mainstream media
Understanding Gen Z opt out: Job (dis)satisfaction, decisions, and career trajectories
As the number of Gen Z employees entering the workforce increases, their growing tendency to opt out of companies has prompted reflection on their job satisfaction, decision-making, and career trajectories. This qualitative study investigated the factors that influence Gen Z’s decision to opt out of their jobs and how their experiences shape their perception of desired work, purpose, and personal development. The research aimed to gain knowledge on how (dis)satisfaction within the workplace Influence their choices and how these decisions reflect their values and priorities. Using in-depth interviews with participants who met the criteria of having previously opted out of their work, the study examined their motivations and perceptions, as well as the modifications they implemented in both their work and personal lives. The findings revealed that Gen Z’s decision to opt out does not symbolize immaturity or impulsiveness; rather, it shows that they engage in careful planning and reflection before taking action in pursuit of mental well-being, autonomy, and meaningful work. Additionally, the study identified emerging themes such as the redefinition of success, establishing boundaries, and prioritizing work-life balance. These insights highlight a generational shift toward prioritizing health and well-being over traditional notions of maintaining a stable career
Embracing Ignatian Spirituality and the Jesuit mission in Jesuit higher education institutions in the Philippines: A grounded theory approach
Embracing Ignatian Spirituality and the Jesuit Mission constitutes the foundational attitude that animates Jesuit-lay partnership. Lay partners share in the mission and live the spirituality. This dissertation is an attempt to generate particular notions and understandings as experienced by lay partners in Jesuit higher educational institutions in the Philippines. Guided by the qualitative approach as introduced by grounded theorist Barney Glaser, the lay partners’ concept and understanding of partnership and of being a partner, as lived in higher education, were generated systematically from field data, then analyzed and coded using the constant comparison method. Embracing Ignatian Spirituality and the Jesuit Mission in Jesuit higher education institutions in the Philippines, as the core category, emerged as the participants’ main concern. This theoretical construct evolved from five interrelated and substantive sub-core categories, namely: 1) Becoming Jesuit-Lay Partners in a Formative Process amid Contextual Challenges, 2) Identifying with and Embracing the Jesuit Mission as Lay Partners, 3) Embracing the Ignatian Spirituality as Jesuit-Lay Partners, 4) Appreciating the Ignatian Pedagogical Foundation of Jesuit-Lay Partnership, and 5) Appropriating the Institution\u27s Mission and Spirituality as Jesuit-Lay Partners. The study established five essential elements through which lay partners embrace the Ignatian Spirituality and live the Jesuit educational mission. These elements capture the experiences, concerns, and insights about Jesuit-Lay partnership of forty-two lay partners. Embracing Ignatian Spirituality and the Jesuit Mission offers a leadership formation model and a framework for developing educational policies and programs for lay leaders, faculty, and staff members in higher education, especially in Jesuit schools where partnership in mission is integral to institutional identity and practice.

Understanding Brand Perception and Purchase Drivers Among Engaged Stakeholders for Products Developed at the University of the Philippines Los Baños
Branding for universities is a relatively new concept, particularly as they position themselves to be an “entrepreneurial university.” This model necessitates a proactive approach to intellectual property (IP) management and technology transfer. Recent studies on university branding focus on higher educational institutions (HEIs) and how branding supports the development of their distinct identities and reputation. However, research on the perception of university-developed products, particularly in the context of the Philippines, is still limited. This study, therefore, examined the brand perceptions and purchase drivers of engaged stakeholders towards University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB)-developed products to evaluate the effectiveness of the university’s branding and IP commercialization efforts. An online survey was distributed to the participants of the events organized by the UPLB Technology Transfer and Business Development Office (TTBDO) on the 114th UPLB Foundation Day in March 2023. A total of 104 UPLB constituents and customers responded to the survey, which used a Likert scale to measure brand imagery, awareness, and familiarity. The Likert scale responses were tested for reliability using Cronbach’s alpha. Results showed that UPLB is widely recognized for academic excellence, although perceptions of its innovation, food security, environmental, and health initiatives are mixed. Product-level brand visibility remains low, with only 41.09% of frequent dairy product consumers familiar with the brand, and most stakeholders have never heard about some of the presented UPLB products. Reasons that are related to branding and packaging did not significantly affect their decision to purchase, but some sociodemographic characteristics influence brand awareness and familiarity and the proposed packaging design. Recommendations include leveraging the university–community connection and social proof in addition to the enhanced branding strategies.https://animorepository.dlsu.edu.ph/apipmibookseries/1007/thumbnail.jp
