Anonymous Whispers: A Critical Discourse Analysis on Digital Gossip in Select Philippine University Freedom Walls

    No full text
The anonymity afforded by university freedom walls has proliferated the spread of information and digital gossip, actively shaping ideologies surrounding campus hierarchies—an influence that remains critically underexplored in academic research. This study addresses that gap by seeking to understand how freedom walls function as a form of discourse that constructs and negotiates hierarchical ideologies within academic communities. It analyzes 18 purposively sampled posts from the three most followed Facebook freedom walls of universities in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), namely the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP), National University (NU), and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU). Using Fairclough\u27s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study examined the posts on three levels: linguistic features at the textual level, the role of anonymity in fostering discourse at the discursive level, and emerging themes related to social hierarchies at the social practice level. Findings reveal a prevalence of negatively charged emotional language, power-related terms like “privilege,” and categorical words that divide communities. Linguistic features such as informal language, hyperbole, sarcasm, mockery, and humor illustrate how anonymity shapes the unrestrained discourse on topics that shape hierarchical ideologies, such as socioeconomic privilege, faculty conduct, interschool rivalries, and departmental status, without fear of reprisal. While freedom walls facilitate open student discourse, they also raise concerns of cyberbullying, misinformation, and privacy violations that can negatively affect the campus environment. Thus, there is a need for critical awareness, integration of digital literacy in education, and an established systematic administrative process that ensures accountability amidst anonymous settings

Uncovering Political Agendas: A Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis of Philippine Government Agencies’ Websites

    No full text
The role of websites in communicating government services and updates to constituents is paramount since they can serve as dependable hubs of critical information. However, since these are government websites, there may be politics behind their visual and textual contents that need to be uncovered. Yet, there has been a dearth of studies, especially in the Philippine context, that scrutinized the sociopolitical forces that are at play in the production of these website contents. Hence, in this study, we attempted to continue seamlessly meshing the critical discourse analysis framework of Fairclough with a multimodal analytical model in dissecting the top five Philippine government websites. For six weeks, we recorded the homepages of the websites by taking note of their textual and non-textual elements. Our analysis revealed the following emerging themes: the agencies’ official colors and logos have been used in the majority of the websites’ homepages to attain harmonization of each agency’s visual branding; headlines and other texts have been exploited to bolster the administration’s appeal (e.g., deliberate use of acronyms such as “Bawat Buhay Mahalaga” for BBM); marginalized sectors and issues have been on the periphery of the websites’ focal interests; and there has been an implicit discrepancy of the websites’ depiction of sociopolitical happenings from the local realities. Our findings are significant in advancing the discourse on creating systematic means of unveiling the sociopolitical forces behind websites and other multimodal online content

From Posts to Prose: The Influence of Social Media and Romantic Fiction on Relationship Expectations Among High School Students

    No full text
This study explores the influence of social media and romantic fiction on the expectations of real-life romantic relationships among high school students. As media becomes increasingly embedded in adolescent lives, understanding its role in shaping relationship ideals is crucial. The study aimed to determine students\u27 consumption habits of social media and romantic fiction and whether these habits significantly affect their perceptions of real-life romance. A descriptive-correlational and comparative design was used with a randomly selected sample of 125 high school students. A survey instrument, adapted from validated scales, measured consumption patterns and relationship expectations. Statistical analysis revealed that while age did not significantly affect social media use, gender did. Additionally, both age and gender influenced romantic fiction consumption. There was no significant correlation between social media use and romantic expectations, but a significant relationship was found between romantic fiction consumption and higher romantic expectations. These findings suggest that romantic fiction has a more profound impact on adolescents’ ideals than social media. This study contributes to the discourse on youth development, emphasizing the need for media literacy education and awareness of how fictional narratives shape real-world beliefs

The Correlation Between Decision-Making Skills and the Cognitive Flexibility of the Grade 10 Students of Theresian School of Cavite

    No full text
Adolescents often face the critical task of making informed decisions, particularly when choosing a senior high school strand and college course—decisions that significantly impact their future careers. Despite the importance of these choices, there is a noticeable gap in existing literature on adolescents\u27 cognitive flexibility and decision-making abilities, as most studies have focused on adult populations in Western contexts. This study sought to address that gap by examining the relationship between cognitive flexibility and decision-making skills among Grade 10 students at Theresian School of Cavite. Quantitative results revealed a moderately positive correlation between cognitive flexibility and decision-making, suggesting that students possess a ‘Very Good’ level of decision-making skills and an ‘Excellent’ level of cognitive flexibility. These findings indicate that students can adapt to unforeseen situations, think creatively, and solve problems effectively. Qualitative data further identified three key themes influencing these abilities. The first, Adjusting One’s Decisions, highlights the importance of reflecting on past experiences, recognizing mistakes, and developing maturity. The second, Analytical and Strategic Thinking, emphasizes critical analysis, emotional awareness, persistence, and responsibility. The third, Considering Multiple Perspectives, underscores the value of empathy, collaboration, and openness to diverse viewpoints. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that Grade 10 students at Theresian School of Cavite exhibit strong decision-making skills and excellent cognitive flexibility. These attributes enable them to approach complex challenges with adaptability, insight, and thoughtful judgment, supporting their ability to make sound decisions that shape their future paths

This learning plan is designed to foster a deeper understanding of Disaster Readiness and Risk Reduction in the Philippines. The following objectives are set to be accomplished by the end of the lesson: A. identify the various types of disasters and their respective characteristics; B. comprehend the risk factors associated with different types of disaster; C. apply principles of disaster readiness and response; D. explain the Sustainable Development Goals connected to the Philippine Disaster Risk. These goals are aligned with the 11th Sustainable Development Goal, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable and the 13th goal which is to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Given the susceptibility of the Philippines to different types of disasters, this learning plan can provide valuable insights on enhancing resilience and adaptability during times of disasters. Its purpose is to minimize losses and facilitate faster recovery. The target audience for this learning plan is the Grade 12 students of Asia Pacific College. The lesson will commence with an icebreaker activity called the “Family Feud” or other gamified icebreakers. The class will be divided into teams with an equal number of students, depending on the class size. This game will cover essential facts about the Philippine disaster risk and will last approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Following the icebreaker, the lesson will proceed to the core content. Simulations and interactive questioning will be employed to create a learner-centered environment. To further enhance engagement, an interactive simulation game titled “Legends of Learning: Robo Ready” (accessible at https://www.legendsoflearning.com/learningobjectives/natural- hazards/) will be utilized. Lastly, a short assessment will be conducted using this game, “Stop Disaster!”, of UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.
