Beneath the Surface: Assessing the Spatio-Temporal Distribution of Microplastics in Lake Champlain and its Tributaries
Microplastics are an increasing concern in the environment, with global plastic production growing at an annual rate of 8.4% from 1950 to 2015. Once discarded, plastics fragment into smaller pieces, including microplastics (<5 mm), which enter ecosystems through land-cover runoff, wastewater effluent, airborne deposition, and improper disposal. These particles accumulate in rivers, lakes, and other waterbodies, potentially affecting aquatic organisms and ecosystem health. This research investigates microplastic pathways, distribution, and loading in Lake Champlain and its tributaries, and retention within local fish communities. Preliminary surveys in 2024 sampled five New York tributaries, while 2025 efforts focused specifically on the Saranac and Ausable Rivers. Historic whole-lake samples from the Long Term Monitoring Program (1992–2025) were analyzed to determine microplastic concentrations across 15 lake stations. Data from previous wastewater treatment plant surveys (2016–2018) across New York and Vermont were used to assess post-treatment effluent contributions. Approximately 103 fish from Lake Champlain were examined to quantify microplastic retention. Results indicate fibers are the dominant microplastic type in New York rivers and across Lake Champlain, with more urbanized areas, especially the Saranac River, contributing the greatest quantities. Wastewater treatment plants were significant microplastic sources, with particle morphology varying by facility. Fish results revealed primarily fibrous microplastic retention in digestive tracts. By identifying pathways, distributions, and retention patterns, this research establishes a baseline for microplastic contamination in the basin and provides information to guide management and public awareness initiatives.SUNY PlattsburghCenter for Earth & Environmental Scienc
Motivating and Preparing Teachers To Teach MLLs
New York State school districts are seeing an increase of non-English Language Learners (ELLs) and Multi-language Learners (MLLs) entering schools. With this increase of students, mainstream teachers are not getting the proper professional development or training to teach ELLs/MLLs effectively. In this capstone project, it will go into talking about all of New York State's bilingual standards, regulations, and tools to teach MLLs. It will also talk about culturally responsive and sustaining teaching practices that can better equip not only mainstream teachers, but everyone working in a school, to close the gap and improve learning outcomes for MLLs. Research has shown that many teachers feel unprepared and do not have enough training, confidence, and resources to properly meet the needs of teaching MLLs. Research also shows that in teachers who do receive proper training and know how to use NYS bilingual standards correctly and practice culturally responsive sustainability teaching, their MLLs show academic, social and emotional growth, and have overall better learning outcomes. It will explore what NYS bilingual standards and regulations are and how to properly use them. It also goes into how to embrace students' home languages and cultures and how to use CRSE in the classroom by providing professional development for teachers. Over the past few years, physical education teachers have been having a difficult time trying to get their middle school students to want to participate in physical education class. Less and less students are intrinsically motivated to want to participate in physical activity. As a result of this, more students are setting themselves up for failure in terms of setting up a routine and maintaining a healthy lifestyle for their future. Engaging and effective strategies are needed to understand how physical educators can help intrinsically motivate and engage students in physical activity. Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) Breeding Resource Selection and Nest Survival in Northern New York
Expanding understanding of species ecology across different spatial scales, geographic ranges, and behaviors aids in implementing management actions to support populations. The Eastern Whip-poor-will (Antrostomus vociferus) is a species of conservation concern in New York. Breeding Whip-poor-will research often focuses on auditory occupancy modeling at regional scales, leaving knowledge gaps in aspects like home range structure and selection, non-vocal behaviors, nesting ecology, and smaller-scale resource selection. I investigated Whip-poor-will home range, landcover, and fine-scale resource selection, nest site selection, and daily nest survival within the alvar barren regions of Jefferson County, NY by monitoring individuals with ground-based telemetry during the 2023 and 2024 breeding seasons. Home ranges averaged 19.0 ha. Whip-poor-wills selected home ranges with increased forest edge density and intermediate proportions of upland forest, with peak selection at 49.3% forest. In study properties with more grassland/agriculture, Whip-poor-wills selected home ranges with more shrublands/open barrens. During the day and at night, Whip-poor-wills selected for shrublands and dense forests and avoided developed areas, with little preference for forest type or fine-scale structural characteristics. I also found many Whip-poor-will nests (n = 38) in shrublands and forests, which were always < 2.8 m from a tree stem. Whip-poor-wills in this region selected for nest sites in mixed forest patches with increased basal area and more shrub cover. However, Whip-poor-wills also selected for increased visibility immediately around their nests. All nest patches had deciduous tree cover, but Whip-poor-wills selected more coniferous tree cover up to 47.5%. Whip-poor-wills also selected nest sites with more leaf and needle ground cover, not solely on leaf cover as past accounts suggest. Daily nest survival was good (0.979) but decreased with closer proximity to trees and more leaf and needle ground cover. These results indicate that managing for patchy mosaics of upland forest and shrublands will be beneficial for breeding Whip-poor-will populations by supporting their diurnal, nocturnal, and overall home range activities. Additionally, maintaining mixed forest patches, retaining residual trees in shrublands, and partial shrub removal in possible breeding areas will be beneficial for providing more quality Whip-poor-will nesting habitat.AMSUNY BrockportDepartment of Environmental Science and EcologyMSMalone, Kriste
BH3 mimetics augment cytotoxic T cell killing of acute myeloid leukemia via mitochondrial apoptotic mechanism
Adoptive cell therapy (ACT) can address an unmet clinical need for patients with relapsed/refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML), but its effect is often modest in the setting of high tumor burden. In this study, we postulated that strategies to lower the AML apoptotic threshold will augment T cell killing of AML cells. BH3 mimetics, such as venetoclax, are a clinically approved class of compounds that predispose cells to intrinsic apoptosis by inhibiting anti-apoptotic mitochondrial proteins. We explored the anti-leukemic efficacy of BH3 mimetics combined with WT1-specific CD8+ T cells on AML cell lines and primary samples from patients with a diverse array of disease characteristics to evaluate if lowering the cellular apoptotic threshold via inhibition of anti-apoptotic mitochondrial proteins can increase leukemic cell sensitivity to T cell therapy. We found that the combination approach of BH3 mimetic and CD8+ T cells led to significantly increased killing of established AML lines as well as of adverse-risk primary AML leukemic blast cells. In contrast to the hypothesis that enhanced killing would be due to combined activation of the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways, our data suggests that CTL-mediated killing of AML cells was accomplished primarily through activation of the intrinsic/mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. This highly effective combinatorial activity due to convergence on the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway was conserved across multiple AML cell lines and primary samples, suggesting that mitochondrial priming may represent a novel mechanism of optimizing adoptive cell therapy for AML patients.Parker Institute of Cancer ImmunotherapyVoRSUNY DownstateMedicineN/

How Does Race Affect Experiences with Police Brutality
Throughout history, there has been long-standing conflict and palpable tension between law enforcement agencies and racial minority groups. Historically, and in the present day, being part of a minority group meant being prone to racialized stereotypes of being aggressive or dangerous (Yadon, 2022). This issue continues to be relevant within our society today. This paper will explore if there truly is a correlation and connection between race and police brutality and if they factor in each other. Studies will show whether certain races are more susceptible to police brutality; if certain races experience the most extreme forms of police brutality, and if there are personal biases within officers and who they may choose to profile.
