Binaural beats and music for anxiety management: a rapid review and implications for music therapy practice
Anxiety is the most common mental illness in the general population. Symptoms of anxiety in individuals may develop into behavioral, physiological, and cognitive changes that can impair their daily lives. Binaural beats occur when the brain perceives the difference between two frequencies that were exposed separately to each ear. The brain synchronizes with the perceived frequency, the binaural beat. Various benefits can occur for the listener, depending on the frequency of the binaural beats. This rapid review synthesizes existing research on how binaural beats have been used to help individuals manage their anxiety symptoms including: the effectiveness, frequencies, carrier tones, dosages, and settings. This review will discuss the implications and considerations of binaural beats as interventions within the music therapy profession. A total of fifteen studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Binaural beats were shown to be effective in reducing anxiety in 87% of the studies with 53% showing significant reduction in anxiety and 27% showing a statistically significant reduction in anxiety. The findings suggest that using lower frequencies; delta, theta, or alpha wave binaural beats for 10 minutes, is effective in various medical settings to lower pre-procedural anxiety. 2D Platforming Game in Godot
This paper describes the process of solo video game development of a 2D action platformer in the game development engine Godot version 4.3. All of the visuals are pixel art, created in the program Aseprite. The main mechanic of the game is using a lance as both a weapon and a tool for platforming — putting it into the ground and wall blocks to hurl the player around. The initial ideas through the creation of the game are described — both the research of what's needed and the first implementation — then critiqued with the details of how they were improved. The project resulted in a barebones demo and an entire introductory level.Purchase College SUNYMathematics & Computer ScienceBachelor of ArtsTusman, Le
"The Children of Light:" Deconstructing Hasbara as a Means of International Communication
This paper interrogates the development of hasbara and analyzes how it creates an artificial us vs. them dichotomy. The intricacies of how hasbara has been sold to American audiences will be elaborated on as well. In order to function in the United States, hasbara has to appeal both to Jewish and non-Jewish Zionists, as well as to a general sense of shared "Western" values between the United States and Israel. Furthermore, this paper focuses on how the connection of Palestinians to their ancestral land is routinely undermined through the designation of Palestinians as a dehumanized racial other that poses an alleged existential threat to "Western civilization."Purchase College SUNYPolitical ScienceBachelor of ArtsCassells, Dian
Brownfield Redevelopment: Essential Factors for Successfully Redeveloping Brownfield Sites Across the U.S.
In recent decades, there has been an increase in brownfields, which are underused sites previously developed. This trend is largely due to the preference for urban expansion into new areas rather than redeveloping existing sites. Nevertheless, restoring and rejuvenating brownfields bring significant benefits to communities, although the process requires considerable effort. A major challenge in brownfield remediation is identifying and prioritizing sites for revitalization. With the assistance of the Environmental Protection Agency efficiently identifying brownfields streamlines the remediation process thus enabling targeted approaches. In an effort to understand what determines a successful remediation, brownfield remediation success stories were evaluated from all over the United States to figure out when are brownfield redevelopment projects most effective.Purchase College SUNYEnvironmental StudiesBachelor of ArtsTaylor, Ryan W
Everyday Affects and World-Makings through Fragments: The Shimmers of Cracks and Clay
This project lives in the in-between – between sculpture and anthropology, thinking and making, observation and intuition. Through fragments of everyday life – cracks in the street, pieces of clay, pauses and textures – Everyday Affects and World-Makings through Fragments: The Shimmers of Cracks and Clay asks how we can notice differently. What stories do the materials and objects around us carry? How do small, often overlooked details move us, shape us, and offer ways of being in relation? Rather than controlling or explaining, this project leans into curiosity, care, and the felt intensity of being in the world. Drawing from Kathleen Stewart's Ordinary Affects, Brian Massumi's writings on affect and the virtual, and Gilles Deleuze's thoughts on forces, this project explores the emotional charge of the mundane and the generative potential in the incomplete. As a Brazilian/U.S. American artist-anthropologist, I work through ethnographic writing, oral histories, installation, sculpture, and assemblages to trace moments of shimmer, tension, and possibility. These writings informed my practice in sculpture, and the final installation, "Tender Traces," holds these fragments as living pieces.Purchase College SUNYAnthropologyBachelor of ArtsOwens, Rache
Body and Blood
Body and Blood is a comic project concerning the vampire as a stock character in media that has been used for centuries to represent societal fears and has lately become synonymous with the experiences of minority groups. This is a reinvention of older, more harmful tropes of vampire literature in which these groups are portrayed as literal monsters which suck the blood of innocent people.Purchase College SUNYVisual ArtsBachelor of ScienceLynch, Robi
Roxanne Chang- Senior Project Thesis Paper
This paper details the process of creating my Senior Project for New Media from conceptualization to assembly. It delves in to the feeling of displacement that immigrants face as they learn to adapt to a new environment and new cultures. The art piece created as a result of this conceptualization serves as a voice that speaks to the everyday struggles of immigrants. It was created with the hope of making immigrants feel seen for the hardships they endure in exchange for better opportunities; to serve as a reminder of community for those confused as to how they fit in.Purchase College SUNYNew MediaBachelor of ArtsMagenheimer, Sar
Senior Thesis
My collage series explores how bodies are vehicles of expression and action on their environment. Collage art has evolved throughout history, and the work of artists like Hannah Höch and Bearden sparked ideas that influenced my own approach. This exploration also stems from the surrealist movement’s emphasis on expressing the unconscious and how they can be displayed in a visual form.Purchase College SUNYVisual ArtsBachelor of ScienceWalsh, Dav
