Social Emotional Supports for Students with Diverse Linguistic and Cultural Backgrounds
Get PDFThis capstone addresses the question: How can schools implement social-emotional learning that supports linguistically and culturally diverse students and their families? Despite there being a growing emphasis on social-emotional learning in schools, implementation strategies frequently overlook the unique and diverse challenges and strengths of ELLs. Literature reveals three primary challenges: lack of culturally relevant SEL, limited teacher training, and insufficient family engagement. In response, this capstone presents a two-day professional development (PD) program designed for educators and support staff. The PD focuses on integrating SEL with culturally responsive strategies and strengthening home-school partnerships. The expected outcomes include improved teacher confidence, stronger teacher-student relationships, and more inclusive school environments for multilingual learners. The PD aims to help mitigate the identified challenges by equipping educators with tools and practices to support all students. Ensuring Equity in Special Education: Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Approaches for ELLs
Get PDFThis thesis capstone project investigates the misidentification of ELLs in special education and considers how CLR practices can increase the accuracy of the referral and evaluation process. Supported with current research, the study discusses key issues that contribute to the misidentification of ELLs, which include the use of monolingual assessments, the lack of bilingual evaluators, deficit thinking, and the lack of family voice. To address the challenges discussed, a two-hour professional development session was developed to guide and support educators through reflection, case analysis, and the creation of a CLR referral checklist. The PD session highlights collaboration in decision-making, equity in assessment strategies, and family engagement. The findings of the study recommend that when educators are equipped with culturally responsive frameworks, they’re better prepared to differentiate between language acquisition from a disability. Increasing Reading Comprehension Among Secondary Multi-Language Learners (MLLs) Through Strategic Reading Practices
Get PDFReading comprehension is critical for academic success, and a growing number of 7th through 12th grade students are not reading at grade level. While reading comprehension is an issue for all teachers and students, it is particularly concerning for ENL teachers owing to the unique linguistic needs of their students. ENL teachers should focus on providing support for their students by teaching them strategies to use while engaging in reading to enhance reading comprehension. This population of students must be given the opportunity to practice reading strategies in a collaborative and low-risk environment that promotes increasing language proficiency alongside academic content. When multi-language learners are given the opportunity to practice reading strategies, they are able to build their literacy skills and create meaning out of text. This paper explores reading comprehension strategies and develop a collaborative reading strategy—the Reading on the Wall protocol—that allows teachers to assess their students during collaborative reading and provide appropriate supports thereafter. Enhancing Student Achievement Through Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching for English Language Learners from K -12th grade
Get PDFThroughout the years, students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds have come into K-12 classrooms. These students, called English Language Learners (ELLs), bring with them not only their valuable cultural knowledge, but also lived experiences, and languages. Sadly, these students face many challenges in classrooms designed mainly for English speaking students. Many teachers worry and report feeling underprepared and improperly equipped to support ELLs when they come to these mainstream classrooms. Many teachers report not having the proper training, resources, tools, and guidance to address students’ diverse academic and language needs effectively. Studies highlight that culturally responsive teaching (CRT) serves as a framework to help in bridging this divide. By honoring student identity, building on students’ cultural resources, and linking instruction to their lived experiences, CRT brings forth more engagement, equity, and academic success for ELLs. To address this problem, a professional development will be held at Mckinley School District for all teachers and staff. The goal of this professional development is to help teachers shift their mindsets about the thoughts or views they have about ELLs and the barriers they think these students might bring with them, and see them as an asset instead. Tee Time for Turtles? Community Differences Between the Barracks Golf Course and Point au Roche State Park
Get PDFPainted turtles (Chrysemys picta) are important indicators of habitat quality, and play an important role in freshwater ecosystems. Urbanization impacts turtle populations via land-use changes, fragmentation, and habitat loss which alter freshwater turtle abundance and distribution. Sex ratio and age structure are key demographic parameters of population health. We aimed to compare painted turtle abundance and demographic patterns (e.g., age structure, sex ratio), as well as recapture rates at an urban versus rural wetland. Additionally, soundscape surveys were used to establish pond community diversity as a further indicator of urbanization impacts. In fall 2025, we performed mark-recapture of painted turtles using crab traps at an urban (Barracks golf course) and a rural (Point au Roche State Park) in Clinton County, NY. Following the Ecological Research as Education (EREN’s) TurtlePop 2.0 protocols, we live trapped turtles over a period of three weeks at each site and deployed autonomous recording devices (ARUs) to assess the diversity of avian communities. At each site, 10 hoop traps were used and animals were notched on perimeter scutes, while age structure and sex ratios were determined from body metrics. Site conditions were compared across ponds which included pond area, basking site availability, and water temperature. We also compared bird communities using BirdNet’s AI algorithm and the Sorensen Community Similarity Index.This fall, we captured 45 and 38 unique turtles at Point au Roche and the Barracks, respectively. There were significantly more juvenile turtles at the Barracks (26) than at Point au Roche (13), but not in sex ratios between sites. Point au Roche had significantly more male captures (20) than female (5), as well as recaptures. There was no difference in sex ratios between sites, at the Barracks, or a difference in age structure at Point au Roche. There were also no significant differences in any body dimensions for any cohorts between sites. Across the entire longitudinal study, there have been 122 turtle captures - 66 from the Barracks and 56 from Point au Roche. Painted turtle populations might be more abundant at the urban site due to the nature of the connected pond complex with increased heterogeneity as compared to Point au Roche’s single pond structure. Fewer juveniles at the Barracks could be explained by reduced predation risk due to higher anthropogenic activity, also reflective of bird community soundscapes. Sex ratio differences may be an artifact of small female sample sizes. Plastics in Paradise: Quantifying Microplastics in Lake Champlain Beaches
Get PDFMicroplastics (MP’s) are pollutants that accumulate on shorelines and marine/freshwater ecosystems. MP’s are 25mm) along the strandline. Previous research determined that MPs <1mm size are poorly extracted in fine sediments so we used potassium carbonate (ρ = 1.54 g/cm-3) to density separate fine particles for future characterization of those particulates under the microscope. We determined that City beach samples contained approximately twice the MP abundance as did Ausable beach. The most common MP morphologies were foams, fragments and rubber of medium sizes (2.35mm, 1.18mm). MP abundance was greater in low beach visitation areas as compared to high. Fragments, wrappers, cigarette butts and pellets are the most common morphologies found in the beach macroplastic samples. Density separation of beach sand only produced fiber and fiber bundle morphologies. City beach likely contains more plastics than Ausable because it has higher rates of regular public visitation. Low visited sections of the beaches may have a higher abundance of plastics due to beach grooming; highly visited areas are groomed more often than low visited areas. Density separation is an effective method for isolating fibers and fiber bundles that would normally get caught within a sieve. This research has helped raise awareness that regular beach grooming and Clean Up outreach events can help reduce plastic pollution along our shorelines.
