Get PDFThis senior project examines the history of the "lost" short-line railroad, The New York, Westchester & Boston Railway. It served the New York metropolitan region for almost three decades, connecting Westchester County with New York City. In its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, it was affordable and luxurious for the time. Yet the railroad never made a profit and eventually collapsed. No amount of commuter loyalty could resurrect the fallen line. Elegant Invasion
Get PDFThis thesis summarizes an exhibition that is an amalgamation of 5 different installations that attempt to achieve an elegant invasion of the body. These small studies each hypothesize in their own way that healing of the body can be achieved through inserting yourself in a safe, controlled and curated space that imitates, satirizes and explores trauma in order to cope with it. These studies are captured in photoshoots that are each taken with an art historical, political and/or personal lens. Each photoshoot executes this idea and aims to heal a different part of the body that has been invaded previously, and instead opens it up to be invaded by my own hands elegantly. Investigating the antifungal potential of sertraline in Rhodotorula mucilaginosa
Get PDFFungal infections caused by antimicrobial-resistant strains are a growing clinical concern. This project explores the antifungal potential of sertraline, an SSRI, against Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, an emerging opportunistic yeast. Using a broth macrodilution assay, sertraline was found to inhibit growth at 32–64 ppm and exhibited fungicidal activity at 128 ppm. The MFC/MIC ratio (2–4) suggests fungicidal properties. A Study on Maximalism
No full textThis thesis explores the relationship between maximalism and the canvas. I'm interested in how the canvas can go beyond the frame and enter a 3-dimensional space. I paint textures and fabrics using strictly acrylic to create intense juxtaposing feelings and realities. I layer everything on top and through each other to maximize the space. I also include a hand-painted stop-motion animation video to allow viewers to literally step out of the canvas. Creating a Welcoming Learning Environment Through Communication Between ELL Families and School Districts
Get PDFThis capstone project explores the question: How can school districts improve communication and collaboration with English Language Learner (ELL) families to support student achievement and engagement? The gap of communication and collaboration between ELL families and districts is a growing area of concern as diversity in the United States population continues to rise. Districts with diverse student populations may find difficulty engaging with culturally and linguistically diverse populations. A literature review was conducted, and a professional development (PD) was created to highlight and offer strategies to mitigate the problem for district professionals who work with ELL students and their families. The literature review and PD examine barriers faced by ELL families and educators, proposing theoretical frameworks with strategies to mitigate the problem, and improve student outcomes by reducing the gap of communication and collaboration between districts and ELL families. It is a shared responsibility within district communities to create welcoming environments for students and families of all backgrounds.
