The Politics of Book Banning: Intellectual Freedom, Libraries, and the New Culture War

focusing on the role of public and academic libraries. Drawing on interviews with librarians and
library assistants as well as existing scholarship on censorship, the paper explores how book bans
disproportionately target marginalized voices and how self-censorship and institutional pressure
function as covert mechanisms of control. This study uses a qualitative methodology based on
semi-structured interviews, analyzed within a broader framework of intellectual freedom and
authoritarian trends. The findings reveal that while academic libraries remain relatively
insulated, public libraries are on the frontlines of ideological battles, particularly around
LGBTQ+ and racial justice content. The paper concludes with strategies for resisting censorship

Hip Hop Collaboration Graph Senior Project
No full textIn this project, I created a graph of old-school hip-hop collaborations that have connected with each other to produce and to influence the hip hop culture. The main idea is to find connections between the east coast and west coast artists to create a graph of a wide variety of relationships of who worked with who using mathematical concepts of graph theory in discrete mathematics. Coding was also utilized to create the graph. Hip hop is a culture as well as a genre of music that has brought many people together starting from the early 1970's to present day. Hip hop has influenced so many people in ways that would help not only bring people together but to support communities that have faced intense impacts of drugs, crime, poverty and many other environmental issues. There are many artists throughout hip hop history that have implemented hip hop in important ways. One of the ways includes displaying significant messages through music and song writing, while the other is through building communities using a hip-hop collaborative system. In the project, you'll also find key tools used to build the graph and important information on the Python coding language. No full textThis paper explores the variety of Museum Studies opportunities offered to undergraduate students at Purchase College- State University of New York. I examine how academic programs such as coursework, internships and work-study positions provide hands-on experiences of museum practices. Using my own experiences in Museum Studies and Arts Management, courses and how, through these opportunities, I've been able to collaborate with artists, curators and my peers. I gained first-hand experience on exhibition management, curatorial work and community engagement, which prepared me for future career opportunities in the arts sector, stimulating my academic and professional growth. Through a discourse analysis, New Museology, as an interdisciplinary field, is explored, which encourages a reimagined museum model of visitor engagement and the development of creating lasting relationships between a museum and its visitors. I highlight the importance of offering Museum Studies exposure to students as undergraduates. Queer, Anti-Author: Self-Censoring Narration in Contemporary LGBTQ Fiction
Get PDFThis paper is a critical analysis of three contemporary texts in queer fiction, which are Autobiography of Red by Anne Carson; Cleanness by Garth Greenwell; and Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters. These texts all provide specific commentary on the inherent tension that a queer narrative subject has to their own narrative voice under the hegemonic system of heteronormativity, which is a system that undermines their authority and validity as narrators. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse by Albrecht Dürer as Roman Deities
No full textThe Four Horsemen of the Apocalpyse, a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer finished in 1498 amongst an image and text series labeled Apocalypsis cum Figuris. In this essay I explore the weapons and possibly that Dürer had inspiration from Classical ideals pertaining to the iconography of the Horsemen. Each of the Horsemen Conquest, War, Pestilence, and Death have weaponry similar to Roman gods and their attributions. Conquest with bow and crown, much like Apollo Roman god of the sun. War with with his sword as compared to Mars Roman god of war. Pestilence's attribute of a scale is common amongst Dürer oeuvre, and is seen as an attribute of Mercury, messenger of the gods. And finally, Death's attribute of a pitchfork can be seen to represent two Roman gods, Neptune god of the sea, and Pluto god of the Underworld. I further discuss how these Roman deities are used as a metaphor to the ideology of the Catholic religion. DOES METAPHOR FRAMING AFFECT THE STIGMA ON MENTAL HEALTH?
No full textDoes using terms that refer to mental illness, such as crazy or insane, to describe negative events contribute to the stigma surrounding mental illness? To test this question, participants in this study first read either a metaphorical or non-metaphorical passage describing either a positive or negative context. The negative passages were about rising food prices at a grocery store, and the positive passages were about falling prices at the grocery store. In the metaphorical condition, prices were described using terms like "crazy" or "insane," and in the non-metaphorical condition they were described as "unbelievable" or "unreasonable." Next, participants completed a desire for social distance measure and mental illness stigma questionnaire to assess the effects of the passage they read. The use of metaphor did not affect attitudes toward mental illness on either measure, nor did it interact with the context of the story. More research is needed to better understand the relationship between metaphor and mental illness stigma.
