    Safeguarding wetlands, habitat and urbanization across the East Australasian flyway

    As the world's population grows, the impact of human activities, human population growth, urban expansion and land-use change have seriously impacted natural ecosystems and have caused a series of water and biodiversity-related challenges across our land, city and seascapes. Floods now occur with increasing frequency worldwide and water pollution can be severe and as design and planning response, Australia and China have proposed water-sensitive urban design (WSUD) and sponge city design (SCD) respectively. Of particular concern, is the loss and degradation of wetland habitats. As biodiversity hotspots and essential ecosystem service providers, the loss of wetland function threatens the many species that depend on this habitat for their survival. The Far Eastern Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) is a large wading bird highly dependent on wetlands that is Endangered’ (EN) according to the IUCN "Redlist" lP. This research investigates the potential of a forward-thinking design approach hybrid of WSUD, SCD that considers the retention and construction of wetlands in urban areas to maintain and/or restore habitat for this key species. Examining the plight of this one species offers the possibility to enlighten our understanding of planning and design synergies across lands and seas and across boundaries and politics, space and time. Through an approach of considering two end points in the annual cycle of this bird’s year – nesting sites at Podhi Island in China and Alfred Cove in Perth, Western Australia – a narrative of collaborative concern and potential design future response is articulated. The article summarizes the necessity of protecting these endangered birds through a brief literature review and then a research-by-design method that illustrates the feasibility to construct wetlands and habitat that not only address the growing water issue in the cities, but also can protect ecosystems and biodiversity to create a better home for both birds and people

    With this poem I explore the many nuanced considerations of geography, geopolitics, community, insiderness and outsiderness that grapple with each other and influence each other throughout the multilayered space that is the Blue Pacific Continent. I unfold a narrative that works through a moment by moment attentiveness that does not – cannot – grasp the whole. It’s told by a persona that recognises that scholarly omniscience comes at the cost of embedded agency and connection, and so refuses that singular perspective and invites a kind of complicity from the reader. We are watching ourselves through a screen or representation. But are we really just figures on some screen, ever distanced from the immediacy of life, cajoled to see it in a certain way through a narrow choice of gazes and actions, anthropological, quizzical, touristic and/or complicit? The poem offers a string of place-specific images and characters, tourists, yachties, industrialists, government representatives and, yes, even locals interacting across the big sea landscape resource that is the Pacific Ocean. The title, in pidgin, comes from graffiti on a wall in downtown Port Vila

    Landscape and Urban Design for improved urban microclimate

    In this paper, we discuss the important role of landscape architecture and urban design in implementing urban heat mitigation strategies. We discuss how these professions relate to and are considered in studies focused on urban climate and outdoor thermal comfort. Strategies available through landscape architecture and urban design are closely associated with an improved urban thermal environment (Chu et al, 2024). Street orientation, building height and density, green cover ratio, building materials, and the shape and size of water bodies can mitigate urban heat by adjusting urban microclimate and reducing energy use (Abd Elraouf et al, 2022; Liu et al, 2022; Xu et al, 2019). In the context of climate change, it is therefore essential to properly design and plan the built environment for mitigating urban heat, and it is increasingly important to ensure effective communication between the science community and built environment professionals

    Negotiating a place for Agricultural and Pastoral Shows in Canterbury, New Zealand

    Agricultural and Pastoral (A&P) shows bring together farming and non-farming communities across the urbanrural continuum. Prior research demonstrates that visitors experience a range of activities that promote a sense of trust in agriculture, which suggests they are important places for negotiating a social licence to farm. Based on our analysis of five A&P showgrounds in the Canterbury region, our research indicates that the places where A&P Shows are held are also subject to negotiation. This is evident in changes in their location over time, different ownership structures and relationships with local councils, and infrastructure to enable multiple uses by the local community
