    Turning up the Heat: Reflecting on a decade of teaching landscape climate design.

    When a landscape digital design practice emerged in the 2000s, it offered an unprecedented ability to engage with invisible atmospheric conditions. With big data and new software tools, dynamic systems could be integrated directly into design processes. Since 2015, the University of Melbourne landscape programme has explored these new design potentials in studio and electives focused on heat. The same decade has seen deeper acceptance of the climate crisis, more accessible and extensive data sets and more advanced software, yet student outcomes are no more sophisticated or innovative. Reflecting education and research practice, and drawing on student work and critical theory, this paper discusses conceptual difficulties in engaging with non‑linear digital design processes. Interest in atmospheric theoretical framings and technological applications has been replaced by passive solutionism and linear design thinking, or ‘problem-solving’. Centrally, conceptions of simulation as offering an understanding of atmospheric behaviours have shifted to a belief in control; an attitude mirrored in practice with problematic results. As the AI era begins, the implications for landscape architecture practice are critical. The increasing reliance on technology to accurately model ‘reality’ allows complex algorithms to decide the future of cities, diminishing, if not erasing, the role of creativity and design

    Cooling strategies using thermal alliesthesia: a complementary approach to enhancing greenway walking comfort

    A favourable thermal environment along urban greenways supports public health and sustainability. In dense built-up areas, limited land availability makes it difficult to rely solely on high-quality green spaces for continuous greenway development. Planners are attempting to increase tree canopies along municipal roads, even under less than ideal conditions. The key challenge is how to improve thermal comfort for those walking along these road corridors. Combining a literature review and field investigation, this paper introduces thermal alliesthesia as a perspective that complements physical design. Existing strategies to improve thermal comfort in greenways focus on enhancing static environmental quality. In contrast, ‘thermal alliesthesia’ emphasises how changing subjective perception can shape thermal experience. The thermal alliesthesia effect can be triggered by variations in the physical environment. Taking Beijing’s Second Ring Road Greenway as a case study, this paper proposes route planning and landscape design for urban greenways as strategies to elicit this effect. It describes the detailed design of a representative section of the greenway to demonstrate how this concept can be applied. This approach is adaptable across climate zones, provided designers develop flexible, site-specific solutions. The findings offer practical insights for greenway planning and design in complex urban contexts

    Interpreting value: Bendigo Hospital Case Study

    Landscape measurement approaches offer important ways to determine and disseminate project performance. However varied conceptions of performance highlight subtle differences in underlying values and expectations. By offering a multi-perspective structured reflection on the Bendigo Hospital Case study across the collaborators – practitioner, student and academic, this paper opens a space for discussion allowing comparison, overlap and divergent positions to emerge. Aligned themes of ‘methodology’,’ complexity’ and ‘timing’ provide a common ground for discussion. Collectively, we offer insights and suggestions towards the future development of landscape performance studies

    Why landscape architects should embrace landscape performance evaluation—The “market” perspective of landscape development

    This paper explores the necessity for landscape architects to adopt landscape performance evaluation through the lens of George Akerlof’s “market for lemons” theory. The “market for lemons” theory, which addresses the degradation of product quality due to information asymmetry and a lack of information, is applied to landscape architecture to highlight similar underlying challenges in the discipline and the industry. The lack of practices assessing the actual performance of built landscape projects prevents landscape architects from explicitly and persuasively communicating their true value to clients, resulting in a “market” saturated with low-investment projects that focus on low-value aspects of landscape architects’ work, or "lemons". This paper argues that implementing performance evaluation can mitigate these issues by providing empirical evidence of project benefits, thereby reducing information asymmetry and the lack of information, and fostering a market for high-quality landscape projects, or "peaches." We argue that by embracing performance evaluation, landscape architects can enhance the transparency of their projects’ performance and contribute to the disciplinary rigour. This shift is crucial for the profession’s growth and its ability to address contemporary environmental and socio-cultural challenges effectively

    Connecting Research with Practice to Assess Landscape Performance

    In current practice, landscape professionals are often required to provide ‘evidence’ of how their completed projects perform over time. However, few practitioners have knowledge of data collection methods or the resources, including time or money, to carry out structured post-occupancy evaluations of their built work. Using a case study approach to methodically describe and assess landscape architecture projects, as proposed by Francis (2001), is a way to systematically record project information and build a knowledge base about the design, construction, and project performance. Francis’ work informed the development of the Landscape Architecture Foundation’s Case Study Investigation (CSI) program, launched in 2010 with the aim of assessing landscape performance through the lenses of sustainability. The recently established Landscape Foundation of Australia is adapting the CSI Program for the Australian context. This article briefly traces the development of the case study method for documenting and assessing landscape performance, and how an Australian version will extend the original research-practice CSI model that has proven so effective

    Landscape performance in practice: Insights and recommendations

    Over the past decade-plus, landscape performance has gained significant traction and grown in influence and implementation within the landscape architecture discipline. However, measuring, calculating, and estimating the benefits of landscapes—not to mention incorporating landscape performance throughout a design process–can be challenging, especially for practitioners and firms working on tight timelines and budgets. This article examines the current state of landscape performance in practice based on a series of roundtable conversations between eight practitioners at United States-based design firms that are integrating landscape performance in their practice. The definition of the term “landscape performance” is discussed and examples of specific landscape performance activities are provided. The article concludes by identifying challenges and opportunities and offering broad recommendations for strengthening the integration of landscape performance in design practice

    Building Collective Know-How: Part 2: A Framework and Recommendations

    Procedural knowledge is central to landscape architecture. By better understanding how this knowledge is formed, its use can be strengthened within the profession. Based on knowledge creation theories found in professional practice literature, this article proposes a framework for knowledge formation processes. The framework includes a process model consisting of three stages: knowledge construction, peer review, and knowledge use. It also identifies mechanisms, such as metaphors, maxims, and models, that act as “carriers for theoretical ideas” in the building of procedural knowledge. These theories suggest that procedural knowledge is always imperfect and incomplete; and, therefore is best conveyed through a theory that is suggestive rather than predictive and through a repertoire of multiple concepts, models, and frames. The article concludes with recommendations on how to build procedural knowledge for practitioners, researchers, organizations, and the profession as a whole
