    Use of WHO Growth Standards Rather Than Locally Specific Linear Growth Curves Promotes Equity in Pediatric Growth Research for Children Younger Than 5 Years

    There is strong evidence that healthy children around the world grow according to the World Health Organization Child Growth Standards when they benefit from healthy environments, regardless of race, ethnicity, or nationality. Despite this, arguments still exist in the scientific literature that child growth curves specific to local populations are necessary. We use a narrative review of the literature on child growth to focus on articles in which different, locally specific child growth curves have been developed or recommended. We synthesize the arguments against a universal child growth standard to provide an understanding of these problematic claims, in the context of new efforts to address remaining echoes of scientific racism in the field of nutrition and other biomedical sciences. Child nutrition assessment should take place using high-quality tools and metrics that do not depend on race, ethnicity, or nationality.Published versio

    Recent evidence indicates that molt-dependent sampling bias may distort estimates of population-level molt phenology, but these distortions can be minimized by making explicit use of data derived from individuals recaptured at different points of the same molt cycle. We investigated these issues by first examining the pattern of molt-dependent sampling bias in 26 passerine species mist-netted during active flight-feather molt at Powdermill Avian Research Center in southwestern Pennsylvania, USA. We then created simulated datasets of birds in active molt that modeled different types of sampling bias and examined the ability of two conventional and two recapture-based methods to produce unbiased and accurate estimates of molt phenology: Pimm regression (PR), the Underhill-Zucchini type 3 model (UZ3), a recently developed recapture-based extension of UZ3 (recapUZ3), and a novel mixed-model extension of Pimm regression that incorporates data from recaptured individuals (recapPR). Molt-dependent sampling bias was widespread in the Powdermill data and usually took the form of bimodal sampling bias, whereby birds in the early and late stages of flight-feather molt were disproportionately sampled, probably because impaired flight performance during the intense middle stages of molt decreases the probability of capture by mist net. When sampling bias is molt-dependent, recapPR and PR produce unbiased estimates of molt start and duration, and recapPR provides increased accuracy as the number of recaptured individuals increases; estimates derived from Underhill-Zucchini methods, in contrast, are either biased (UZ3) or inaccurate when the number of recaptured individuals is small (recapUZ3). However, when sampling bias is date-dependent—that is, when sampling effort is not uniformly distributed throughout the period of active molt—recapPR and PR produce biased or inaccurate estimates, and recapUZ3 or UZ3 are better analytical options. Our findings emphasize the importance of molt- and date-dependent sampling bias and the value of recapture data in estimating molt phenology and clarify the conditions under which conventional and recapture-based versions of Pimm regression and Underhill-Zucchini type 3 methods perform best and are recommended.Published versio

    Universal basic income and the challenge of racialized opposition: can economic self-interest overcome racial resentment?

    White Americans with higher levels of racial resentment are among the most consistent opponents of social welfare policies for lower-income people because they perceive that these policies predominantly benefit black Americans. The universalist approach to social welfare offers a response to this racialized opposition that appeals to economic self-interest. This approach argues that greater public support is more likely when benefits are distributed more broadly and that racially resentful whites will be more inclined to support social welfare policies when they can directly benefit. The emergence of universal basic income (UBI) provides an opportunity to test this proposition. Using two nationally representative surveys and a survey experiment, we find evidence that economic self-interest can override racialized opposition among lower-income whites. However, we also find evidence that challenges the universalist argument. Racially resentful whites with higher incomes generally oppose UBI and UBI policies do not necessarily garner broader support than the policy most Americans associate with social welfare - aid to the poor. We argue that these findings shed light on the endurance of racialized opposition to social welfare and why public support for UBI remains fragile.Published versio
