The changing lifestyles with globalization have paved the way for the formation of new modern communities called consumer societies. The evolution of consumption into ostentation and status rather than meeting a basic need has created a new understanding of consumption in societies. In this study, the concept of “consumer society”, which has been a frequently discussed topic recently, especially in social sciences due to the depletion of resources, has been investigated. It is aimed to create a systematic literature research map specifically for the studies carried out on the concept of consumer society. In this direction, 679 studies reached in the Web of Science database on consumer society were analyzed within the framework of systematic literature under certain criteria. Studies on consumer society up to November 2024 were evaluated. A summary of a systematic literature study is presented in order to create the infrastructure for future studies

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are toxic, persistent organic pollutants that pose serious risks to human health due to their long environmental half-lives and their tendency to bioaccumulate in fatty tissues. Both active and passive sampling methods are commonly employed to monitor these compounds in the environment. This study was conducted in an urban area of Bursa, Turkey, between June 2022 and June 2023, with the aim of investigating the temporal variation in atmospheric concentrations of PCDD/F compounds using passive sampling. As the first year-round study in Bursa to utilize passive air samplers (PAS) for PCDD/F monitoring, the research involved monthly sampling intervals using three PAS units. The seasonal average concentrations of PCDD/Fs were determined to be 324.66 ± 51.87 fg/m³ in spring, 234.79 ± 57.57 fg/m³ in summer, 363.07 ± 77.99 fg/m³ in autumn, and 479.88 ± 73.20 fg/m³ in winter, with an annual average concentration of 341.50 ± 108.27 fg/m³. The dominant congeners detected throughout the measurement period were OCDD, OCDF, 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDF, and 1,2,3,4,6,7,8-HpCDD. When compared to similar studies conducted in other urban and industrial areas around the world, the measured concentrations were found to be consistent and within comparable ranges. In addition to concentration measurements, comprehensive analyses were conducted to evaluate congener profiles, potential sources, seasonal variations, health risks, and atmospheric transport behavior. The Clausius-Clapeyron equation was applied to assess the atmospheric transport characteristics of PCDD/Fs. Furthermore, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to identify potential sources of PCDD/Fs. The results indicated that vehicular emissions, residential heating fuels, and combustion activities in organized industrial zones were the primary contributors to PCDD/F levels in the study area. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into urban air pollution and PCDD/F emissions, offering a strong foundation for future efforts aimed at air quality monitoring and management in similar urban environments

Interpretation and analysis of scattering in steel fiber alignment in concrete: The h alpha decomposition method using fully polarized b-scan ground penetrating radar (gpr) image data

    No full text
The brittle behavior of concrete often necessitates fiber reinforcement to improve load distribution and crack resistance. This study examines fiber orientation in steel fiber-reinforced concrete, achieved by strategically aligning fibers within the fresh composite. B-scan Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) with full polarimetric imaging is utilized for non-destructive assessment of fiber alignment in the concrete matrix. Using two horn antennas, measurements are taken at two cm intervals along a 120 cm synthetic aperture at 101 different locations in the 2-6 GHz frequency band in horizontal-horizontal (HH), vertical-vertical (VV), horizontal-vertical (HV), and vertical-horizontal (VH) polarizations. These measurements, made at frequencies between 2 and 6 GHz across a range of polarizations, enabled two-dimensional imaging using both H-alpha polarimetric decomposition and raw data images. These imaging methods are used in combination with H-alpha classification surfaces separated into different scattering regions and raw S22 and S21 2D images to obtain the expected results. Results indicate that concrete samples with random, horizontal, and vertical fiber orientations exhibit distinct scattering patterns, enabling accurate identification of internal fiber configurations. The scattering analysis confirmed the precision of alignment determination, demonstrating a reliable, non-destructive method for evaluating fiber orientation in reinforced concrete. This approach holds substantial promise for quality assurance and performance assessment in fiber-reinforced concrete production

Composite materials find a wide range of applications in many sectors such as aviation, architecture, automotive and defense industry due to their superior mechanical and physical properties. These materials, reinforced with various fibers, show superior performance compared to traditional materials and therefore constitute an ideal choice for surface plates of sandwich structures. In this study, double-sided corrugated strip core structures made of aluminum were designed and these structures were made into sandwich structures with composite plates in order to increase resistance against point impacts. Surface plates were produced by impregnating glass, carbon and Kevlar fiber fabrics with epoxy resin by vacuum infusion method. Sandwich structures with surface plates made of different fiber types were subjected to dynamic three-point bending test and point puncture tests using a pointed impact head. In these tests, the puncture resistance and energy absorption capacity of each structure were analyzed. The buckling behaviors occurring in the core structure during the test were closely related to the rigidity and elasticity properties of the surface plates. The results obtained reveal that the developed sandwich structures can be used as a potential alternative in applications requiring materials resistant to point impacts, such as battery boxes and fuel tankers

    No full text
Background: This study aimed to investigate the recurrence outcome with respect to treatment choices in patients with idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM). Methods: A total of 175 female patients (mean +/- SD age: 36.3 +/- 8.9 years) with histopathologically confirmed IGM were included in this retrospective cohort study. Data on patient age, presenting symptoms, treatment protocols (medical and/or surgery), the recurrence rate, recurrence-free survival (RFS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were recorded. RFS time (month) and PFS and time (month) were compared across medical treatment subgroups (antibiotic, steroid, steroid-sparing immunosuppressant). Results: The treatment protocols involved surgery plus medical treatment in 82(46.9 %) patients, medical treatment alone in 82(46.9) and surgery alone in 11(6.2 %) patients. The medical treatment included the immunosuppressive therapy (42.1 %), antibiotic therapy (29.3 %) and steroid therapy (28.7 %). Within a median 36 months of follow-up, recurrence was noted in 64(39.5 %) patients and was significantly more common in the surgery plus medical treatment group than in the medical treatment alone group (53.7 % vs. 25.0 %, p < 0.001). Overall, median (95 % CI) RFS time and PFS time were 29(21.9-36.1) months and 12(5.8-18.2) months, respectively. No significant difference was noted between medical treatment subgroups in terms of RFS time (log-rank p value: 0.176) and PFS time (log-rank p value: 0.421). Nonetheless, immunosuppressive therapy showed a non-significant tendency for longer RFS (vs. steroid therapy) and longer PFS (vs. both antibiotic and steroid therapy). Conclusions: In conclusion, this retrospective cohort study in patients with IGM revealed the association of systemic therapy, particularly the steroid-sparing immunosuppressive treatment, with favorable long-term RFS and PFS outcome. Nutritional and inflammatory indices in gestational and pregestational diabetes: Emphasis on the controlling nutritional status (conut) score

    No full text
ObjectiveTo comparatively evaluate the prognostic value of nutritional and inflammatory indices in gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pregestational diabetes mellitus (PGDM), and to determine their association with adverse perinatal outcomes. MethodsThis retrospective study included 280 pregnant women followed at a tertiary care center between January 2020 and December 2024. Participants were categorized into three groups: GDM (n = 90), PGDM (n = 80), and healthy controls (n = 110). Nutritional status was assessed using the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) and Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) scores. Inflammatory indices including NLR, SII, SIRI, PIV, and others were calculated. Perinatal outcomes such as preterm birth, NICU admission, and Composite Adverse Perinatal Outcomes (CAPO) were recorded. ROC analysis was used to determine the predictive power of the biomarkers. ResultsThe PGDM group demonstrated significantly higher CONUT scores and lower PNI scores compared to the other groups (p < 0.001). Among inflammatory markers, NLR, SII, SIRI, and PIV were significantly elevated in PGDM cases. ROC analyses revealed that the CONUT score had strong discriminative ability in differentiating diabetic (GDM and PGDM) from non-diabetic pregnancies (AUC = 0.787; specificity = 89.1%), while the PNI score showed limited discriminative capacity (AUC = 0.291). Inflammatory indices also demonstrated moderate predictive value, particularly among PGDM cases. Higher CONUT and inflammatory scores were associated with increased rates of preterm birth, NICU admission, and CAPO (p < 0.001). ConclusionNutritional and inflammatory disturbances are more prominent in PGDM than in GDM. The CONUT score and selected inflammatory indices may serve as valuable tools for early risk stratification in diabetic pregnancies. Integration of these parameters into clinical decision-making may improve perinatal outcomes, particularly in high-risk groups such as PGDM
