Is the fear index still frightening for the new members of brics? A study on the stock markets and vix relationship

    No full text
The phenomenon of globalization continues to increase the integration of stock markets over time. While this integration complicates effective portfolio diversification, it also amplifies volatility spillovers during periods of financial depression. Such spillovers predominantly flow from US markets to global markets. The BRICS bloc, with its economic objectives, holds the potential to mitigate or eliminate the influence of Western markets. This potential is likely to strengthen with the inclusion of new member countries and the other countries expected to join in the near future. This study aims to examine whether the stock market relationships of the countries that joined BRICS in 2024 with US markets have undergone any changes. In this context, the impact of the VIX on these countries' stock markets before and after their membership was analyzed using the Toda-Yamamoto test. The findings reveal that, in the pre-membership period, there was causality from the VIX to two out of the three countries under study. However, these effects disappeared in the post-membership period. The empirical findings obtained were also supported by multivariate (BEKK) GARCH models. It was determined that the risk transmission observed during the pre-membership period disappeared in the post-membership period. The study demonstrates that BRICS membership serves as a threshold that eliminates the influence of US markets on the stock markets of new member countries. This finding provides predictive insights for the stock markets of countries that are potential candidates for future BRICS membership. Moreover, this result provides significant evidence that the stock markets of newly joined countries may present an opportunity for portfolio diversification for investors

Bu çalışmada Macit Gökberk’in aydınlanmacı yaklaşımı perspektifinden Cumhuriyetimizin çağdaşlaşma idealinin gelenekle ilişkisi tartışılmaktadırMacit Gökberk is a thinker who has worked hard for the institutionalization of philosophy in Turkey and the establishment of Turkish as the language of philosophy. It can be said that the thinker, who witnessed the period when the empire had just collapsed and the Republic was founded, was a member of a generation that personally experienced the crises of that period. It is known that among the problems discussed by some of Turkish philosophers in the stated generation, the titles of “backwardness”, “development”, “modernization”, and “the Republic and its revolutions” stand out. Gökberk, one of Turkish philosophers who conducted discussions on the titles in question, is an Enlightenment supporter who was also influenced by Renaissance Humanism. For this very reason, the thinker’s critical assessments on Turkish modernization from the Tanzimat to the Republic bear the traces of his Enlightenment approach. It can be argued that the dominance of new values in Turkey’s traditionalist society with the Republic period is an ideal foreseen by the founding fathers. The aim of the dominance of new values in Turkish society is “modernization”. It can be said that the concepts of “traditionalism” and “modernization”, which are, so to speak, antitheses of each other, have a primary importance in the context of interpreting “Turkish Modernization”. However, it should also be noted that Gökberk does not completely negate the concept of tradition; therefore, he directs his criticisms not to the concept of tradition itself but to traditionalism. In this study, the relationship between the modernization ideal of Turkish Republic and tradition is discussed from the perspective of Macit Gökberk's enlightenment approac

Objective: The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate the extent of persistent rhinological morbidity in patients with Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (GPA) who are in clinical remission under systemic treatment, using the Sinonasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) as a subjective quality-oflife measure and Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow (PNIF) as an objective assessment of nasal function. Additionally, the relationship between these two measurements and clinical findings was investigated. Materials and Methods: This prospective and cross-sectional study included 71 patients diagnosed with GPA and receiving systemic immunosuppressive therapy, along with 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Demographic data, SNOT-22 scores, and PNIF values were recorded for all participants. In the patient group, a detailed otorhinolaryngologic history and nasal endoscopic examination were also performed. Due to tracheotomy, SNOT-22 and PNIF evaluations were conducted on 69 patients. Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation test. Results: The median PNIF value in the GPA patient group (90 L/min) was significantly lower than that of the healthy control group (130 L/min) (p<0.001). The median total SNOT-22 score of the patients was 26.0, indicating a moderate burden of disease. A strong, negative, and statistically significant correlation was found between the total SNOT-22 score and PNIF values (r = -0.621, p < 0.001). Abnormal nasal endoscopic findings were associated with both lower PNIF values (p = 0.011) and higher SNOT-22 scores (p < 0.001). Specifically, nasal crusting, septal perforation, and saddle nose deformity were found to be related to poorer functional and symptomatic outcomes. Conclusion: SNOT-22 and PNIF scores showed a statistically significant negative correlation in GPA patients. The presence of rhinological involvement on endoscopic examination was also associated with this inverse relationship between SNOT-22 and PNIF scores. These findings suggest that the combined use of SNOT-22 and PNIF may serve as practical and effective tools for the routine assessment of sinonasal involvement in GPA patients

    No full text
The purpose of this study is to examine the accessibility of special education services for individuals with multiple disadvantages based on the experiences and perspectives of parents and caregivers. This study was designed using a qualitative research method and phenomenology design. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine caregivers selected through purposive sampling. Following the interviews, the researcher kept a researcher's diary to reflect observations, emotional responses, and conceptual evaluations related to the process; this diary was used as a complementary qualitative data source in the interpretation of the data. The data obtained were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of this study revealed that individuals with multiple disadvantages and special needs face serious structural, social, and systemic barriers in accessing special education services. Participants' experiences revealed that they encountered barriers to accessing special education services in many areas, including lack of guidance and counseling, obstacles in the diagnosis and placement process, lack of transportation services, economic inadequacies, and negative attitudes of institution administrators. Parents and caregivers were found to have deep concerns about their children's continued education, acquisition of independent living skills, and future care security. A significant aspect of these concerns is the delayed access to early childhood special education services, particularly due to the lack of appropriate guidance and counseling support during the early childhood period. The study concludes with recommendations for practices, further research, and policies aimed at ensuring full and equal access to special education services for individuals with multiple disadvantages and special needs. The purpose of this study is to examine the accessibility of special education services for individuals with multiple disadvantages based on the experiences and perspectives of parents and caregivers. Buffy-Coat concentrates (BFCs) can be transfused to provide neutrophil support in patients with febrile neutropenia. In this study, the oxidative burst capacity of neutrophils in BFC was investigated in 12 hours-stored BFCs (n=16). Samples taken from healthy volunteers (n=7) (fresh EDTA; fEDTA) and taken before donation from blood donors who donated BFCs (n=16) (donor EDTA; dEDTA) were included. fEDTA and dEDTA samples were used to compare the effect of time. Nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) test was performed to evaluate the oxidative burst. Different titrations (1:16, 1:32, 1:64, 1:128) of phorbol myristate acetate (PMA) were used. BFC samples without PMA addition were used as negative control (NC). While similar results were obtained in BFC samples with fEDTA samples in NC, oxidative activity was statistically high in the dEDTA samples. These results suggested that neutrophils in dEDTA may be spontaneously activated. In all PMA titrations except 1:64 PMA titers, the oxidative burst capacity in dEDTA and BFC samples was significantly lower than that in fEDTA samples. Also, oxidative burst significantly decreased in fEDTA-dEDTA-BFC in all PMA titrations. Spontaneous burst was detected in dEDTA samples under PMA-free conditions, but not in BFC samples, indicating that the additive solution in BFC protected neutrophils from spontaneous activation. Despite the statistically significant decrease, neutrophils in BFCs can remain functional due to their high oxidative activity at all titers (above 75%). This indicates that they can function when transfused. This result also shows that we can use BFCs as a source of neutrophils in experiments. PMA’sız dEDTA örneklerinde spontan patlama tespit edilirken BFC örneklerinde tespit edilmemesi, BFC'deki ek solüsyonun nötrofilleri spontan aktivasyondan koruduğunu göstermektedir. fEDTA örneklerine göre anlamlı azalmaya rağmen, BFC’lerdeki nötrofillerin tüm titrelerde (%75'in üzerinde) yüksek oksidatif aktivite göstermeleri işlevsel kalabildiklerini düşünülmektedir. Elde edilen sonuçlar BFC içindeki nötrofillerin transfüzyon yapıldığında işlev görebileceklerini düşündürmekte, ayrıca deneylerde BFC'leri nötrofil kaynağı olarak kullanabileceğimizi göstermektedir

Stakeholder participation in disaster risk management: The case of provincial disaster risk reduction plan (IRAP) of İstanbul

    No full text
Stakeholder Participation (SP) in the preparation phase of the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) process plays a crucial role in enhancing societal resilience to disasters. However studies addressing the significance of stakeholder participation in the early stages of DRM remain relatively limited in the literature. This research examines SP within the DRM process, taking the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Plan (IRAP) of Istanbul as a case study. The primary objective of the study is to analyze SP during the preparation phase of IRAP, focusing on both processes and criteria, and to identify successful SP criteria and models in the preparatory phase of DRM. In this context, interviews were conducted with 14 public personnel from 10 institutions involved in the preparation process of IRAP. Through content analysis using the MAXQDA software, six themes of SP and 25 success criteria were identified. The research findings are presented under the following headings: i) identification and selection of stakeholders, ii) Key Stakeholders (KS), iii) effective Participation Tools (PT), iv) effectiveness of workshops, v) functionality of Action Plans (AP), and vi) factors hindering SP. The key results of the study highlight the following: 1- properly informing target stakeholders, 2- ensuring the participation of personnel with Institutional Memory (IM), 3- securing active involvement of high-level and local administrators, 4- promoting a culture of action planning among Stakeholder Institutions (SI) and their employees, and 5facilitating open disaster data sharing among stakeholders. In light of these findings, a model for achieving effective SP in DRM has been developed

    No full text
Objective We aimed to examine the comorbid mental disorders observed in children and adolescents with school refusal behavior (SRB), as well as the role of these disorders in their emotion regulation difficulties.Method 95 healthy controls (HC) and 96 individuals with SRB were included. Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS), School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R), Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Teacher and Parent Rating Scale (SNAP-4), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), and Clinical Global Impression-severity subscale (CGI) were implemented to assess the comorbid psychopathologies and symptom severities. Results HC and individuals with SRB were matched on demographic variables. Total and subscores of all scales and symptom severities were significantly different between the groups. There were significant correlations between impulsivity subscore of DERS and hyperactivity/inattention,-emotional problems,-prosocial behaviour subscores of SDQ. Impulsivity subscore of the DERS was also correlated with SRAS total score. Conclusion Our findings indicated that individuals with SRB had more emotion regulation difficulties, anxiety symptoms and behavioural problems, also, impulsivity plays an important role on attention/hyperactivity, emotional problems, prosocial behaviour, and severity of SR in individuals with SR. Further longitudinal studies investigating the role of impulsivity in SR are needed

The effect of e-argumentation supported instruction on middle school students' academic achievement, argumentation skills and epistemic beliefs

    No full text
This study investigated e-Argumentation software's impact on middle school students' (N = 838, grades 5-8) academic achievement, argumentation skills, and epistemological beliefs, compared to Software-free Argumentation and traditional teaching. A mixed-methods design, incorporating a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group approach and a multiple case study, assigned students to e-Argumentation, Software-free Argumentation, or Control groups. Data were collected via achievement tests, argumentation rubrics, an epistemological belief scale, an epistemic vignette, and student interviews.Quantitative analyses revealed that both argumentation groups significantly outperformed controls in academic achievement. The e-Argumentation group demonstrated higher achievement than the no-software group in grades 6 and 8, while the reverse was observed in grade 5; no significant difference was found in grade 7. Descriptively, e-Argumentation groups produced higher quality arguments. The impact on epistemological beliefs was limited; quantitative measures indicated a small e-Argumentation advantage over controls in grades 7-8, though interviews suggested increased student awareness of their beliefs and the nature of scientific knowledge. In conclusion, argumentation-based instruction effectively improves academic achievement and argumentation skills in science. e-Argumentation software shows promise as a supportive tool, but fostering changes in epistemological beliefs appears to be a more complex, long-term process
