    Palm Oil Mill Effluent Metagenome for Cellulose-Degrading Enzymes.

    Functional metagenomic approach incorporating metagenomic DNA library construction and high-throughput screening has proven to be a powerful tool for identifying novel biocatalysts (Wouters et al. 2014). Culture enrichment strategies are additional pre-screening methods employed to provide an attractive means of enhancing the screening hit rate. In this work metagenomic DNA libraries were generated from Malaysian palm oil mill effluent (POME) microorganisms. Three different samples, namely fresh, ambient-cooled and anaerobic POME microorganisms were inoculated in a medium under controlled temperature, light and pH conditions, and in the presence of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) for short incubation time in order to allow growth of microorganisms with cellulose-degrading capabilities. Quantitative and qualitative metagenomic DNA tests indicate the presence of high number of microbes in anaerobic POME compared to other samples which guided us to use this particular sample in further experiments. Titer test also showed that the number of enriched-library clones is 5 to 7 times higher than non-enriched anaerobic POME. The use of such a combination of enrichment strategy with metagenomics greatly improves the screening process for biocatalysts

    Traits determining the greatest variability among barley landraces (Hordeum vulgare L.) from south Algeria

    This study was done on two years of field trials for determining traits explaining the most of diversity among twenty nine barley landraces in presence of three controls and also to confirm the relationships between the different traits studied. Via these two experiments, phenology and agro-morphological traits at maturity were studied. Results of the tests showed a great variability within the germplasm revealed by very highly significant differences (P‹0.001) between genotypes for all traits considered and statistically analyzed. Principal component analyzes could explain more than 70 % of the total variation and the greatest variability was explained over the two years by the common following traits: days to heading, days to maturity, 1000 grain weight, awn length, spike weight and plant height. Very high correlations existing between the following traits: awn length, 1000 grain weight, spike weight, days to heading and days to maturity, were confirmed through each test.  Also, correlations existed between plant height, 1000 grain weight, spike weight, days to heading and days to maturity and between plant height and spike length and also between grain number per spike and spikelet number per spike. Through both seasons, cluster analyzes divided all six-rowed barley into three cluster groups

    Proximate composition of wild yam Dioscorea praehensilis Tubers flours as Influenced by Boiling Times

    The wild yam Dioscorea praehensilis is widely consumed as famine food in Côte d’Ivoire and numbers of African countries mainly after boiling. Raw and boiled wild yam tubers (Dioscorea praehensilis) flours were analyzed for proximate contents such as ash, crude protein, carbohydrate, Moisture energy s using standard procedures and methods. (YT0) was used as control compared to tubers boiled for 5 minutes (YT5), 10 minutes (YT10), 20 minutes (YT20), 30 minutes (YT30) and 40 minutes (YT40). The crude protein contents (9.13 g/100g DM), ash (1.02 g/100g DM), lipid (3.25 g/100g DM), carbohydrate (89.21 g/100g DM) and Moisture (13.04%) were significantly (p<0.05) lowered in the boiled tubers. Even boiled, Dioscorea praehensilis remained a good energy supply product with about 391 kCal/100g. The evolution of parameters essentially the decrease of moisture content showed that for the storage and nutritional purpose, boiling had both positive and negative effect on yam tuber flours. A cooking time of between 5 and 40 min at 100°C was recommended for D. praehensilis

    Relationship of Internet Banking and Bank Performance (A Case of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria)

    Banking industry has been in a process of significant transformation. The transformation in the banking industry is based on innovation in information technology. Information communication technology is the backbone of global change curve by internet banking in Nigeria. It is against this background that the study examined the relationship of internet banking on performance of banks. (A case study of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria). Using time series data of 2011 – 2015, the study employed regression technique in the analysis of sourced data. Data were collected from secondary sources through annual reports and statistical bulleting of central bank of Nigeria. Internet banking was measured using the total value of internet and mobile banking while Bank performance was measured using return on total assets and return on equity of deposit money banks in Nigeria. Return on equity was regressed on internet and mobile banking, and return on total assets was also regressed on internet and mobile banking using multiple regression technique. The study revealed that positive relationship exists between mobile banking and return on equity, and between internet banking and return on assets. While on the other hand no significant relationship between internet banking and return on equity, and between mobile banking and return on assets. It is therefore, recommended that banks must offer numerous services through mobile banking Banks and effective transaction through the internet

    Improvement of irrigate rice yield by using different cations rates in lowland affected by the harmattan in savannah zone of Côte d’Ivoire

    A good knowledge of rice mineral nutrition could help to improve rice growing, in harmattan period, permitting thus, a continuous rice culture during all year round. However, rice nutrition in exchangeable cations of lowland soil is still unknown. It is why, three agronomic trials have been driven in a secondary lowland, in Cote d’Ivoire Guinean savannah zone to 2014 to 2017. Into a randomized completed blocks, ¦NPK ¦was applied according to the rates of 30 kg N ha-1, 60 kg P ha-1 and 50 kg K ha-1. Then, the rates of 50, 100 and 150 kg.ha-1 were added respectively in the treatments of Ca and Mg combined with 10, 20 and 30 kg Zn ha-1. Fertilizers were applied as basal and rice variety named ¦NERICA ¦¦L19 ¦was transplanted per hill of three plants spacing by 20 cm × 20 cm. At tillering and the booting stages ¦¦, 35 kg N ha-1 were applied respectively. NPK treatment ¦ was¦ considered as the control of the experimentation. The calcium was revealed as the most important cation inducing synergistic effect on rice nitrogen nutrition. The optimal dose was identified at 90 kg Ca ha-1 for highest grain yield (3.58 tha-1) in harmattan period. A fertilizer composes of 100 kgNha-1, 60 kgPha-1, 50 kgKha-1 and 90 kg Ca ha-1 was recommended for rice growing in Cote d’Ivoire Guinean savannah zone

    Antimicrobial Activity of Medicinal Compounds Produced by Fungal Degradation of Soybean Oil Using Lignocellulose Biomass as Surface

    Methyl esters were produced by fungal degradation of soybean oil using banana leaves as surface. Analysis of the products also revealed medicinal compounds (Benzyl Benzoate obtained from the banana leaves used as surface for the fungal degradation of the soybean oil and 1, 2-Benzene dicarboxylic acid dioctyl ester obtained from the soybean oil impurities). Microorganism activity test was carried out on the medicinal compounds to confirm their antibacterial and antifungal activity. The result showed that both had antibacterial and antifungal activity as shown by the zones of inhibition and as a result can find useful applications in food processing and preservation as well as agriculture as pest/disease control agents

    In India, medicines based on herbal origin have been the basis of treatment and cure for various diseases. The Indian Cow, Bos indicus, is a most veneered and valuable animal in religious scriptures. Cow urine has found therapeutic applications since days of yore. Cow urine based preparations have powerful antimicrobial, antiviral, anti allergic, and antioxidant activity. So the current research is mainly centered on the exploration of the antimicrobial powers of cow urine and incorporation of cow urine into gel formulation. The gels were prepared by using carbopol 940, propylene glycol, glycerin, triethanolamine, distilled water along with cow urine distillate and Azadirachta indica extract. The prepared gels were evaluated for physical appearance, spreadability, pH, Homogeneity and viscosity. The present study analyzes the antibacterial and antifungal activity of Cow Urine Distillate against the clinical pathogenic microorganisms such as Bacillus subtilis and Staphalococcus aureus. Maximum antibacterial activity was observed in Bacillus subtilis than Staphalococcus aureus. Antifungal activity of cow urine distillate was analysed against Aspergillus niger. The result revealed optimum characteristics features of gel formulation and confirm antimicrobial potential of prepared gel

    Study of thermal stability of two acid phosphatases from breadfruit (Artocarpus communis) seeds: kinetic and thermodynamic analysis

    The thermal stability of acid phosphatases ACP1 and ACP2 from breadfruit (Artocarpus communis) seeds was investigated by studying the effect of heat treatment over a range of 55 to 75 °C. Thermal inactivation of each enzyme, evaluated by loss in activity, was apparently followed by first-order kinetics with k-values comprised between 0.0139 ± 0.0005–0.0620 ± 0.0001 and 0.0117 ± 0.0002–0.0362 ± 0.0004 min-1 for ACP1 and ACP2, respectively. D and k-values decreased and increased, respectively, with increasing temperature, indicating faster inactivation of ACP1 and ACP2 at higher temperatures. Ea and Z-values were estimated to 69.19 ± 2.71 kJ/mol and 31.55 ± 1.05 °C for ACP1, 52.25 ± 1.94 kJ/mol and 41.84 ± 2.06 °C for ACP2. Thermodynamic parameters were also calculated. All the results suggest that both acid phosphatases are relatively resistant to long heat treatments up to 60°C
