    Biodegradation of Chlorobenzoic Acid Substitutes, Particularly, 2- Chlorobenzoic Acid by Aeromonas hydrophila

    Bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) was isolated from the Petra Wastewater Treatment Plant effluent in southern Jordan. It was identified by using morphological and biochemical characteristics. A. hydrophila was found to be able of using chlorobenzoate compounds as carbon and energy source. These capabilities were with different biodegradation rates (4- chlorobenzoic acid 5µM/hr, 3,4-dichlorobenzoic acid 15.5µM/hr, 2- chlorobenzoic acid 41µM/hr and 3- chlorobenzoic acid 65µM/hr). The degradation ability was monitored through the release of chloride, disappearance of the substrate and finally the growth of bacterial cells on these substrates. A. hydrophila dioxygenases physiologically induced by chlorobenzoic acid compounds, were analyzed for both ortho or meta ring-cleavage of these aromatic compounds. Only 1, 2-dioxygenase activity was detected which suggest that the cleavage is through the ortho pathway. The best results of degradation of 2-CBA compound were obtained with 3mM substrate concentration, 25ºC, pH 7and 200µl inoculum size. The carbon sources affected the 2-CBA degradation differently from that on chloride and cell mass production. Nitrogen sources used reduced the degradation activity of the 2-CBA as well as in the chlorine release from 2-CBA. However, the nitrogen source L-proline had a slight enhancement effect on the biodegradation between the 40-80h

    Assessment of Seminal Plasma Creatine Kinase Activity and Malondialdehyde Concentration among Normozoospermia but Infertile Men

    Background: Despite the considerable research efforts that have been made by Reproductive Biologists to understand the etiologies of male infertility, idiopathic male factor infertility still remains unexplained. It occurs in about 10% cases of infertility. Since the etiologies cannot be identified using routine semen analysis, it is important to identify cellular and sub-cellular sperm complications that may help to explain the cause(s) of the infertility, thus stimulate caregivers to direct the further work-up, diagnosis and counseling of affected individuals. The objective of this study was to determine seminal plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration among normozoospermia but infertile males. Materials and Methods: After routine semen analysis, seminal plasma CK activity and MDA were determined among 75 normozoospermia but infertile men and 50 men of proven fertility using spectrophotometric method. Unpaired Students-t-test and regression analysis were used to compare and associate CK activity and MDA concentration with sperm characteristics. Results: Significantly higher (p<0.001) level of MDA and CK activity were observed among infertile subjects than control group. Sperm count, percent motility, and viability were significantly lower (p<0.05) among study participants than control subjects. Similarly, percentage abnormal morphology was significantly higher (p<0.05) among infertile subjects than control group. The Odds of elevated CK activity to impair sperm motility, viability and morphology were 9.12(CI 102.6, 318.3), 3.18 (CI 129.9, 170.8) and 1.9 (CI 192.2, 208.1) times respectively higher among infertile group than controls. Similarly, the Odds of higher levels of MDA to impair sperm cell motility, viability and morphology were 5.02(CI 2.14, 4.6), 2.26(CI 2.34, 3.64) and 2.9 (CI 2.12, 3.73) times respectively higher among infertile group than control subjects. Conclusions: The seminal plasma CK activity and MDA constitute good indicators of functional metabolic activity and fertility potentials of spermatozoa among subjects with unexplained infertility

    Fabrication and Release Kinetics of Liposomes Containing Leuprolide Acetate

    The present work is focused on the preparation and in vitro release kinetics of liposomal formulation of Leuprolide Acetate. In this work, “Thin Lipid Film Hydration Method” was used for preparation of Leuprolide Acetate loaded liposomes. Prepared liposomal formulations of Leuprolide acetate was evaluated by drug entrapment study, in-vitro drug release kinetics and stability studies. The percentage drug entrapment of Leuprolide acetate for F1 and F2 formulations were found to be 78.14 ± 0.67 and 66.70 ± 0.81% respectively. In-vitro drug release study of liposomal formulations had shown zero order release pattern. Regression co-efficient (R2) value of Zero order kinetics for F1 and F2 formulations were 0.9912 and 0.9676 respectively. After storing formulations for 1 month, stability testing was done at 40C.It was found that all batches were stable. These liposomal formulations of Leuprolide acetate can be formulated for parenteral application to treat prostate cancer and in women, to treat symptoms of endometriosis (overgrowth of uterine lining outside of the uterus) or uterine fibroids

    Patients Satisfaction regarding Quality of Nursing Care in the National Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Genetics in Amman, 2013

    It is important for any health system to provide high quality health Nursing services and respond to the needs of service users. The aims of this study is to study patients\u27 satisfaction regarding the quality of nursing care of the center, to identify the main dimensions of patients\u27 satisfaction regarding quality of nursing care. And determine the association between sociodemographic variables and patients\u27 satisfaction regarding quality of the nursing care. This study was conducted during the period from1st December 2013 to 1st may 2014. The design of this study is Descriptive cross-sectional facility based study. The study sample 305 patients, who were selected randomly, all of them actually participated in the study and completed face to face interviewed questionnaire prepared according to Likert scale and data was analyzed by SPSS. Participants were moderately satisfied with the quality of nursing care in the National Center for Diabetes Endocrinology and Genetics. The total mean was (3.09), with higher satisfaction levels in the General impressions (M = 3.83) than in Communication, interaction and reaction (M = 2.57). Patients from both settings were less satisfied with the Accessibility of services (M = 2.89). Age, sex, marital status, level of education, income, and the diagnosis show statistically significant effects on patients\u27 level of satisfaction. On the other hand duration of diabetes, and current occupation did not show statistically significant effects on patients\u27 level of satisfaction. The present study concluded that reforming community health nursing care policies to place more attention on increasing the level of communication and the interpersonal aspects of the provided care could probably increase their satisfaction. And the geographical redistribution of community diabetes health center to enable the patient\u27s easy access to nursing services in all Jordan regions, increase number of home visits, for the patients\u27 nursing team need to improve communication, interaction skills of nursing care staff and in formats. Nursing team needed training for nurses on communication skills and interaction with patients and their families

    Synthesis and Biological Screening of Benzothiazole Derivatives with Pyrazole Moiety

    Benzothiazole is one of the most important heterocyclic compound, weak base, having varied biological activities and still of great scientific interest now a days. They are widely found in bioorganic and medicinal chemistry with application in drug discovery. In the present study some novel benzothiazole derivatives were synthesized according to the scheme. All the synthesized benzothiazole derivatives have been characterized by using elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1HNMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy and further supported by mass spectroscopy. Purity of all the compounds has been checked on thin layer chromatographic plate and HPLC technique. All the synthesized compounds were tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activity (MIC) in vitro by broth dilution method with two Gram-positive bacteria, two Gram-negative bacteria and two fungal strains. The biological activities of the synthesized compounds have been compared with standard drugs Ciprofloxacin and Flucanazole. Analgesic activities were tested by Tail-flick method and Writhing method. The anti-pyretic activity was evaluated using Brewer\u27s yeast induced pyrexia in rats. The compounds exhibited significant and moderate antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic and anti-pyretic activities. These compounds can be further exploited to get the potent lead compounds. The detailed synthesis and the antimicrobial screening of the new compounds are reported

    Novel FSHβ gene SNPs correlation to litter size in Baladi and Zaraibi goats.

    The objective of the present study is to identify the genetic polymorphism at two loci (exon1 and int2, exon3) in the FSHβ gene in two different Egyptian goat breeds (Baladi and Zaraibi goats) and their correlation with litter size. Using PCR- SSCP technique; 4 genotypes (AA, BB, CC and EE) were detected with the predominance of AA and CC genotype among the two breeds. Several SNPs were reported after sequencing in different genotypes. AA genotype had greater litter size in the two goat breeds. PCR- RFLP for int2, exon3 demonstrated the presence of 2 genotypes (MM and MS) in Baladi goats and only one genotype (MS) in Zaraibi does, with the predominance of MS genotype among the two breeds. One SNP; C 2526 G within the restriction site of the Mnl1 enzyme with no significant effect on litter size. These results revealed that exon1 and int2, exon3 of FSHβ gene could be used for improving breeding programs of goat

    Profitability Analysis of Women in Cassava Enterprises in Ogbomoso Agricultural Zone of Oyo State, Nigeria.

    The study was carried out to analyse the profitability of women in cassava enterprises in Ogbomoso agricultural zone of Oyo- State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were meant to describe the socio-economic characteristics of women, evaluate the costs and returns for cassava tubers and cassava products, estimate the profitability ratio and identify the problems encountered by women in cassava production and processing. A multistage sampling method was used to select samples from Oriire, Ogo-Oluwa and Surulere Local Government Areas in Ogbomoso Agricultural Zone and the sample size was one hundred and sixty respondents. Structured questionnaire were used to elicit information from the selected respondents and it was structured in line with the objectives of the study. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, budgetary and profitability ratio techniques. Average total cost of producing cassava tubers and processing cassava tubers were N57,697.50k per hectare and  N599,929.70k per month respectively. Average total cost for combining production and processing of cassava tubers was N1,500, N650.00k per annum. The net returns for women cassava producers and those women that combined cassava production and processing were N221,052.00k and N7,289,950.00k per annum respectively. The benefit cost ratio (BCR) for the women cassava producers, processors and those women that combined production and processing were 4.83,1.08 and 5.86 respectively. These showed that the enterprises were profitable.  The combination of cassava production and processing by women was found to be most profitable

    Genetic Analysis of Growth Traits in White Boni Sheep Under the Central Highlands Region of Yemen

    The data were collected from 1992 to 2009 of White Boni sheep maintained at the Regional Research Station in the Central Highlands of Yemen. Data were analyzed to study the growth related traits and their genetic control. The least square means for body weights were 2.26±0.67, 11.14±0.46 and 19.21±1.25 kg for birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), six-month weight (WM6), respectively. The pre-and post-weaning average daily weight gains (ADG1 and ADG2) were 106.04±4.98g and 46.21±8.36 g/ day. Significant differences associated with the year of lambing were observed in body weight and weight gain at different stages of growth. Males were heavier and had a higher weight gain than females at almost all stages of growth and differences tended to increase with age. Single-born lambs had a distinct advantage over those born in twin birth at all stages of growth. The lambs in the dam’s second to fourth parities were generally of heavier weight and higher daily weight gain than those in other parities. The heritabilities of all body weights, weight gains at different stages of growth were moderate (0.11-0.43). The phenotypic and genetic correlation among the different body weights were positive and high. The genetic correlations of the pre- and post-weaning average daily gains with body weights were hight to moderate, except BW with ADG2
