Dermatoglyphic attributes once formed in the womb remains unique and persists throughout life for individuals until decomposition after death in the tombs. This research work aimed at finding the relative associations that exists between the dermatoglyphic parameters and intelligence level among the medical students of Bingham University, Karu Nigeria with ultimate purpose of using dermatoglyphic characteristics as bio-indicators for selection of categories of students into good, average and weak academic performances.  A total number of 65 medical students (30 male and 35 female students) who were in 3rd year were selected for this study, students were categorised according to their academic performances in the Anatomy courses into the good, average and weak at the end of the academic session. Dermatoglyphic printings including the finger and palm prints were taken using Indian ink method.  Ulnar loop pattern was prevalence in all categories of students (Right hand: good 72%, average 58%, weak 40%, Left hand: good 72%, average 50%, weak 51% ) and higher symmetrical arrangement was observed in both hands (right and left hands) among the good student, however, no incidence of arch pattern was recorded among the good set of students.  More than two different sets of patterns were observed to be distributed in each hand among the weak category of student and also asymmetrical arrangements were significant (P<0.05) on both hands among the weak.   Reduction in the ridge counts, total ridge counts, absolute ridge counts and palmer tri-radial angles measured (<ATD, <DAT, <ADT) were significant (P<0.05) among the weak and less significant (P<0.05) in the average group of students. Transversality of the palmer ridges was the same in all the categories of students (good, average and weak students) as revealed by the main line index. This observed dermatoglyphic parameters may be used in the selection of students according to categories for education counselling and close monitoring especially in private institutions of learning

    Get PDF
Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are founded in many health diseases and often generated from biological reactions or external factors. Natural antioxidant based on the prevention or treatment of complicated diseases has attracted an important deal of research interest. Phytochemical screening, total phenolic and flavonoid contents and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging assays for evaluation of Salvadora persica (SP) in vitro antioxidant analysis of aqueous, methanolic and ethanolic extracts of roots were determined. It was found that the aqueous water gave the highest total extract yield followed by ethanol and methanol. Qualitative phytochemical screening showed the presence of different phytochemicals in water, methanol and ethanol extracts. Aqueous extract dispalayed the largest total phenolic contents followed by ethanolic and methanolic extracts while methanolic extract showed the higher flavonoids content than the ethanolic and aqueous extracts. Hydrogen peroxide scavenging method revealed that the aqueous and ethanolic extracts have good scavenging ability compared to gallic acid which used as positive control. there were strong negative significant correlations between hydrogen scavenging and phenolic contents (-0.369), but not with the contents of flavonoids. Also, the results revealed that there was a strong negative correlation between flavonoids and total phenolics. The results clearly indicate that root aqueous extract of Salvadora persica is having effective antioxidant activity. &nbsp

New insights on the role of vitamin D in type 2 diabetes mellitus: Review Article.

    Get PDF
Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and vitamin D deficiency are both disorders of high prevalence in the world. Evidence supports an association between low vitamin D levels and risk for T2DM, and its complications. There remains insufficient evidence to suggest whether treatment of low vitamin D can prevent or improve T2DM. Aim: this review will focus on the current understanding of the role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of T2DM, and questioning if vitamin D supplementation can improve the pancreatic function, thus providing a better glycemic control or slow down its complications. Conclusion and recommendation: deficient vitamin D levels increases the risk of developing T2DM. This finding highlights the need for conducting large-scale health screening to identify those at risk of DM using vitamin D blood level assessment. However, more studies are required to ascertain the effect of vitamin D supplementation in T2DM patients

This work was carried out during the two successive seasons (2012/2013 and 2013/2014) to investigate the effect of different planting locations on quantity and quality of Pelargnium graveolens L. volatile oil. The experiment was conducted at five different locations in Egypt in newly reclaimed lands as follows: North Sinai Governorate (El-Qantara Sharq),            El-Monofia Governorate (El-Sadat City), Matrouh Governorate (Siwa Oasis - Khamisa Village), Beni-Suef Governorate (West of Semsta Center) and Giza Governorate (El-Bahariya Oasis - Mandisha Village). Results indicated that all studied parameters such as essential oil percentage, essential oil yield per feddan, essential oil chemical composition and essential oil quality factors (citronellol content, geraniol content and citronellol : geraniol ratio) were affected and varied according to planting location and harvesting time. The best locations for production of geranium oil were El-Qantara Sharq followed by  El-Sadat City and then Beni-Suef Governorate locations.  &nbsp

Corrosion Inhibition of Aluminium in Acidic Medium by Ethanol Leaf Extract of AzadirachtaIndica

    Get PDF
The inhibition of aluminium corrosion in hydrochloric acid solution by ethanol leaf extract of Azadirachta indica was studied by weight loss and thermometric methods. Results obtained show that Azadirachta indica leaf extract leaf extract is a good inhibitor of aluminium corrosion in HCl solution. The inhibition efficiency increased with increase in Azadirachta indica leaf extract concentration but decreased with increase in temperature. The inhibition efficiencies by both weight loss and thermometric methods followed the same trend. The calculated thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption of Azadirachta indica leaf extract onto aluminium surface occurred spontaneously and conformed to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm

    Get PDF
A theoretical experimental work is developed for the production of gas rich in hydrogen content, based on a model of isothermal gasification of sawdust pellets in a reactor in a fluidized bed regime, simulated through an application in Matlab environment, analyzing in particular the influence of the operating temperature in the range 750 °C-850 °C, oxidizing / fuel ratio (for air and steam) and obtaining kinetic parameters. The simulation model presents good agreement with the experimental values, showing the increase of the hydrogen content with the increase of the temperature as with the greater reducing atmosphere and with the introduction of steam in the process

    Get PDF
The purpose of the study is to ascertain if school variable (peer group pressure) and home variables (family history of alcohol consumption, socio-economic status of the family, attitude of parent towards alcohol drinking and cultural norms/festivity) lead to alcohol consumption among adolescents and proffer solution to the social menace of alcohol consumption among secondary school children. The study was a descriptive research design with mixed methods of data collection involving questionnaire and interview schedule. A sample of 100 students out of a population of 130 students and 180 students each of the mid-class (SS 2 and JS 2) of the senior and basic secondary schools respectively were involved in the study. Four hypotheses were posited and tested using Chi-square and statistical decisions made. The instruments for the study were questionnaire and interview schedule with a reliability coefficient of 0.78 using Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient. It was found that parents are the major source of alcohol supply for many young Nigerians and children are often first introduced to alcohol in the family - home. Parents who drink alcohol are more likely to exhibit permissiveness towards alcohol use in their adolescent children. Based on the findings from this study, it could be concluded that children aged 10-16 years in Yenagoa metropolis of Nigeria, indulged in alcohol consumption regularly and in high quantity which is not good for their health. It is necessary that parents should present themselves as suitable role models in – order to guide their children against anti-social behaviours

The purpose was to evaluate effects of feeding intensity on metabolic maintenance, reproduction and welfare in blue fox vixens. Study groups were: Group 1: heavy slimming. Ad libitum feeding during September-November, aimed to produce extremely fat animals. Heavy slimming before breeding season, aim to have animals with normal breeding body condition. Group 2: maintenance of condition. Restricted feeding 35-45% from the level of Group 1 during September-November. Natural slimming to normal breeding condition. Group 3: Rising condition. Restricted feeding 50-60% from the level of Group 1 during September-November. Aim was to produce lean animals. Rising body condition was before breeding season, aimed to have animals with normal breeding body condition. Blood samples were taken regularly throughout the study. Results showed that urea concentration varied seasonally (P<0.001). Concentrations were lowest during winter period. In Group 1, heavy slimming before mating season lowered urea concentration significantly (P<0.001). During autumn period, concentration was lowest in Group 3 because of pronounced feeding restriction. Creatinine levels were highest during summer period in all groups. Glucose concentration varied seasonally in all groups (P<0.001). Intensive feeding clearly affected on triglycerides, glucose and insulin levels (P<0.01). Growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) levels were highest during autumn period. Leptin concentration was highest in December in all groups. Thereafter, it clearly declined towards summer (P<0.001). Concentration of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) was highest in Group 1. Prolactin levels were same in all groups until insemination. During pregnancy, levels increased similarly in groups. After whelping, prolactin levels were low (P<0.05) in Group 1 compared to other groups. Whelping result in Group 1was very low (P<0.001) compared to Groups 2 and 3. It can be concluded that feeding intensity essentially influences on hormonal levels and reproduction in blue fox vixens
