Anti-angiogenic property of Kutsarita leaf (Alternanthera ficoidea) extract determined through Chorioallantoic membrane assay
Alternanthera ficoidea, commonly known as Kutsarita, is a tropical ornamental plant with documented medicinal properties, including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This study investigates the anti-angiogenic potential of ethanolic A. ficoidea leaf extract using the Chorioallantoic Membrane (CAM) assay. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, diterpenes, tannins, phenols, and saponins— compounds linked to anti-angiogenic mechanisms. Varying concentrations of the extract (2,500– 10,000 ppm) were injected into fertilized duck eggs, with Paclitaxel (6,000 ppm) serving as the positive control. Using IKOSA Prisma software and ANOVA for analysis, significant reductions in blood vessel formation were observed at 7,500 ppm and 10,000 ppm concentrations, comparable to Paclitaxel (p \u3c 0.05). These results suggest that A. ficoidea possesses concentration-dependent anti- angiogenic activity, likely due to the synergistic effects of its phytochemicals. This study supports the potential of A. ficoidea as a natural source for anti-angiogenic agents and encourages further investigation into its mechanisms and possible integration in cancer therapy development
