    Earlier diagnosis of peripheral neuropathy in primary care: A call to action

    Peripheral neuropathy (PN) often remains undiagnosed (~80%). Earlier diagnosis of PN may reduce morbidity and enable earlier risk factor reduction to limit disease progression. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is the most common PN and the 10 g monofilament is endorsed as an inexpensive and easily performed test for DPN. However, it only detects patients with advanced neuropathy at high risk of foot ulceration. There are many validated questionnaires to diagnose PN, but they can be time-consuming and have complex scoring systems. Primary care physicians (PCPs) have busy clinics and lack access to a readily available screening method to diagnose PN. They would prefer a short, simple, and accurate tool to screen for PN. Involving the patient in the screening process would not only reduce the time a physician requires to make a diagnosis but would also empower the patient. Following an expert meeting of diabetologists and neurologists from the Middle East, South East Asia and Latin America, a consensus was formulated to help improve the diagnosis of PN in primary care using a simple tool for patients to screen themselves for PN followed by a consultation with the physician to confirm the diagnosis

    Association between the internet use for health purposes and health-seeking behavior of non-teaching personnel of De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute

    Health-seeking behavior (HSB) revolves around the actions individuals are doing to maintain good health or prevent any illnesses from occurring. Consequently, current technologies use the internet as an accessible tool for health purposes. The general objective of this study is to identify if there is an association between internet use for health purposes and the health-seeking behavior of non-teaching personnel (NTP) of DLSMHSI. The specific objectives are: determining the demographic data according to age, sex, and monthly income, determining the frequency of internet use for health purposes, determining the health-seeking behavior of the participants, determining if there is an association between internet use for health purposes and their health-seeking behavior, and determining if there is a significant difference between the internet use for health purposes and health-seeking behavior when grouped according to their demographics. This descriptive quantitative research utilized a self-made questionnaire distributed to 85 NTPs under the academic services. The results showed that the majority, mostly females, belonged to the 18 to 44 age range and had an income of P10,957 to Php 21,194. The level of frequency of internet use for health purposes and health-seeking behavior was interpreted as “very often,” and most of them practice appropriate HSB. Additionally, there is a significant correlation between one’s HSB and internet use for health purposes. In contrast, there is no significant difference noted with the HSB and internet use following the demographics of the participants

    Factors affecting the colony count of oral Candida albicans of electronic cigarette users among young adults in Dasmariñas, Cavite

    Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) emerged and were marketed as a more viable alternative to traditional tobacco smoking, especially among the youth. While there is insufficient evidence clearly explaining the effects of e-cigarette use on human health, recent literature has shone light on its various adverse effects on the body, particularly on oral health and its possible contribution to oral microbial dysbiosis. This study explored the potential factors that may have affected the colony counts of oral Candida albicans—the causative agent of thrush. The study participants (N = 40) comprised 22 male and 18 female e-cigarette users aged 18 to 22 from Dasmariñas, Cavite. All the participants had oral C. albicans counts above the threshold values postulated by various literature (̅= 3.41 x 1010 CFU/mL). No significant relationship was found between the participants’ age (ρ = 0.0909), sex (ρ = 0.6934), frequency of e-cigarette usage (ρ = -0.1127), duration of e-cigarette usage (ρ = -0.1561), and exposure to active ingredient (ρ = 0.0112) to the oral C. albicans colony counts. Nevertheless, adequate knowledge and awareness of e-cigarette usage presents valuable information to users and non-users alike to avoid its potential adverse effects and empower those who are susceptible to it
